I have been using Visual Basic for about 2 weeks now so I know I am getting in over my head at this point, but times a factor. I have created a user form with around 100 User entered text boxes and pull down menus, tabbed pages etc. I can create a distributable file with no problem. However I cannot find any kind of example, tutorial, etc that will show me how to allow an end user to save the form as "enterfilenamehere.DCP" (for example) and then reopen any .dcp file created in my form application. The only examples and tutorials I can find are how to type text and save it as a txt. format. Could someone lend a complete novice some advice or point me in a good direction on where to learn about saving and opening custom file types? To clarify The user can use my form, But at this point has no way of saving and recalling what they entered in my form. It's a one time use only...not really what I want.

This is probably a pretty novice design question. I'm trying to work my way through a number of requirements and give the users the experience they're looking for.I've written a tool that does big calcluation-type things. It currently consists of a class library and command line tool (separate .NET projects.) We're using an Access database format as the file type because it can keep all the various tables together in one file. A few other items about the application: There are not many users. There are no concerns with scalability. There are not great concerns with updates. Desktop is desired. Not web.Using VB and .NET 3.5 SP1
I now need to develop a GUI front end that will allow typical File/Open and File/Save type operations.Users expect that they can open a file, edit it some, then either choose to save it or close it unsaved without any changes being written back to the file. Saving it would obviously save all changes affecting all tables back to the file.
Does it then make sense to use a temp file for something like a proxy then? To, when a user "opens" a file, copy the source Access file to a local temp file and then use that for the editing session? Then, if the user "saves", copy the local temp file back to the source path?
Update: [tagged with ms-access tag too] Also, I omitted the fact that users would expect typical File / Save As functionality too. I think the design I've put in question in this post is what is traditionally called the Proxy design pattern. Has anyone tried this (successfully!) with Access database files before? Words of caution or advice?

I need to create a dotNet saveAs dialog, but I need to populate the file formats in the dialog. After the person have selected a file, it must connect that to a file format that I populate into the SaveAs command in the Excel Interop. After the Interop SaveAs command, I must check if the file have been saved correctly.

I have never made a notepad like program just calculators and felt like learning how to link/find the parts to make save, open, format, and some other extras but I have NO code. I can't move on unless I know the parts needed and what the code for one of them is if I can link the save as button on the menu bar to the part needed to save I can figure the rest out besides the format that it saves in.

I am new to programming, I have used vb6 a few times but am now trying to learn vb. net using micrsoft visual studio 2008. I am trying to open a dbf file and then then allow the user to edit the field headings and type of field. I am trying to start off with the basic of just open the dbf file and populate a listbox with some properties of the table such as field heading and the type of field, (ie string, or double) and then later look at how to edit and save the new table.

I have a need to do some extensive editing on some SGML files. SGML is, of course, just tagged ASCII files. But, I need to convert that SGML to nice, neat MS Word files, with paragraph styles. I need to do extensive searching and replacing. VBA does not have the necesary regular expression support, so, I need to use VB.Net. But, I'm at a loss to do the most basic thing. I just need to know how I can open a Word file in VB.Net.

I'm trying to save a text file with a certain format, kind of trying to create some sort of colums, so when I open it will be easier to read...If I have these four words: Calendar, Car, Time, Airplane; I would like to put them into colums...
vb.net
oWriter.WriteLine("{0,50}{1,10}", "Calendar", "Airplane")
oWriter.WriteLine("{0,50}{1,10}", "Time", "Car")
The problem:When I save it to a text file or print it, it comes out like this:Calendar AirplaneTime CarHow can I put them like "centered", so that doesn't look like that mess...?

I'm developing a small application that creates Excel files with user details. I'm developing this in vb.net 2008 express edition under Windows XP SP2 and with Office 2003.My target PC is running Windows Vista. I'm able to run my program without any problem and even the Excel files get created without any problem on this PC.However, the problem is when I try to open one of these created files in Vista, I get a message like below:
"The file you are trying to open, "TestMe.xls", is in a different format than specified by the file extension. Verify that the file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source before opening the file. Do you want to open the file now?" If I click yes, it opens up properly. This is a headache as it opens up in my developing PC without any hassle. I'm sure its something to do with the Excel reference I've made in my PC (which is running Office 2003).How best can I save this file so it opens up in Excel 2007 without the above message.

I am throwing some data out into Excel and am having some formatting troubles. I have 5 columns (date, time, a long number I don't want displayed in scientific notation - text is fine, text, text). I can get it all working with numberformat, however I have to do them different ways.
Date works this way cell.numberformat = "m/d/yy" and it formats it to say 3/1/11
Time works this way cell.numberformat = "h:mm AM/PM" and it formats it to say 8:07 AM
For the long number cell.numberformat = "@" and it doesn't change the format and it gets displayed in scientific notation
BUT if I use cell.style.numberformat = "@" it works as it should, but it messes up all of the date and time cells. Apparently when you use style.numberformat, it doesn't just apply to the cell you're working with. If I try using style.numberformat with the date and time formats, they don't change and are entered as if I didn't change the format at all.

I work in an engineering design house and programming is not my actual profession. And I am relatively new to VB .net (previous i had worked in vb 6)
I am working on an in house application. I am coding a simple application in vb .net. This applications takes a few inputs from user and calculates a result. Now I want to implement a simple functionality that user should be able to save the input and results just like most of the windows programs can in a new file format. And user should be able to open the save file when desired.

Once a user has selected a file with the open file dialog, how can I handle this action? For example, if the user has selected a .txt file and has opened it, how can it get the data from the file? How can it return the path that the user found the file in? Then, how can it save the file?I know that there is a OpenFileDialog.OpenFile() method, but I am also pretty sure this is not what I am looking for. I have also tried the ToObject method, but I probably messed up somehow.
