im makign a game that reads text files off of an ftp server. everything is working great. except for the fact that i cant read more then the first line of the players text file. how would i use substring to, for example, look for 'inventory' and get all the info under 'inventory' and above the next title?

Problem is now I have been asked to make the same program start from the second line of the text files to get rid of headers. I am currently using StreamReader to do this but not sure how to make the reader "line feed" before it reads the data. Any help would be much appriciated. Current code below..

We have a reporting app thats needs to update it's charts as the data gets written to it's corresponding table. (the report is based off just one table). Currently we just keep the last read sessionid + rowid (unique combo) in memory and a polling timer just does a select where rowid > what we have in memory (to get the latest rows added). Timer runs every second or so and the fast sql reader does it's job well. So far so good. However I feel this is not optimal because sometimes there are pauses in the data writes due to the process by design. (user clicking the pause button on the system that writes data). Meanwhile our timer keeps hitting the db and does not get any new rows. No errors or anything. How is this situation normally handled. The app that writes the data is separate from the reporting app. The 2 apps run on different machines. Bottomline : How to get data into a c# app as and when it is written into a sql server table without polling unnecessarily.
View 4 RepliesI'm doing a project where we are re-creating a very old system.The client wants the same base functionality and some improvements.One of the things I'm currently working on is the note-system. These are used as flags of some sort, but are also used as a comment field for some products or client profiles.In the old system you could write the text and save it like you would get in a .txt file. They want the new one to be able to do word formatting such as:
Different font sizes (Only some parts of the text)
Different font colours (Only some parts of the text)
Underlining of words
Bolding
Italics
Tab-spaces
Those are the specs they want. What I need to know is the following:
1) How do I do that?
2) Currently they store all these files on the server as text files and the database have paths that refers to each file. I want to be able to save a text file with that formatting to the HDD of the server like in the old system.
3) If possible I would like to save that text to the database with the formatting.
I am using VS2008(VB.NET) and SQL Server2000. I want to make an application which reads files and Insert Data into SQL. If first file has some error. Write into log and Move Next file for Proceed. How can I do that.
View 3 RepliesI have a hardware which sends out packets containing 17 bytes to the comport in bursts of 3. the little test VB that I have written receives and displays the bytes in a line of 17 bytes long and works fine until it gets to around 170th packet, then it starts to mix up (looks like shifting the data left) the bytes shift mostly by one digit sometimes by two. then it will continue to give almost a packet correct and a packet shifted for about 50 packets. Then it will correct itself for a long while, but then the speed at which it receives drops. All the packets are sent 3 times, and before things go wrong (within the first 170 packets) the packet counter shows that it receives 3 packet each time but after the problem it goes to 2 packet per burst and then to one.
If i close my VB monitoring program say at packet 165 and immediately open it again, it wont go wrong for another 170 packets, this points the finger at VB. I have check my hardware, there is no problem with that.The program reads port - waits for 17 bytes - once 17 has been received it will go and buffer the packet in an array. In fact they are 2 arrays but printing fro either results in the same problem.I have tried whatever i could think of but to no avail, i am wondering if some kind of house keeping needs to be done to clear something... I am sorry the program is a bit messy but I have been making many changes to find out what the problem is - my code below:[code]
I have a VB.Net project that creates a new Webbrowser instance which then navigates to a page in order to read the HTML into a variable ( then modify this before displaying in a visable webbrowser).The issue i have is that the webbrowser navigate just reads the page from the cache and does not read it from the server.

I have a simple Windows Service that reads from an Excel spreadsheet and imports the records into a SQL Server 2000 database table. Before it loads it checks if the file has been successfully imported before (using filename) and whether any of the records in the file have been imported before (using primary key). If these checks are ok I load the records into a datatable and then update the datatable to the database.
However, I need to do this in a transaction as I want to ignore the whole file if there is an error. The file goes to a discarded folder and the user gets an email with why the import failed. (This is likely to be because the store the record is for is not yet added to the database and the referential intergrity of the db fails). If there is no transaction the records before the failure record are imported. When the file is imported again (the store has been added to store table) the file is then rejected because duplicate records are already in the db.

I am working on a game using Visual Basic.NET and XNA. I am having trouble making the map scroll with the player. I can move the map at a square at a time(32x32) but I don't like the way it looks. I want to move at a fluid rate if possible. I want the player to be able to walk half-way through a square then see a half-square to either direction your moving. IE: Walking left, walk half-way through a square then to the far left of the map see half of the next square going to be drawn. But I don't want just half-way, I want to be able to just have fluid movement where you can walk to an 1/8th of the square and see the next 1/8th on the other side of screen if possible... To open this project and view you must have Windows Phone SDK installed can get it from Microsofts website......Note:Only up and down movement have been added into the game.
View 2 RepliesI can currently make a dialog1 pop up, then the user clicks "Yes" for dialog1, then dialog2 pops up, and if the user clicks "no" instead of "yes", dialog2 reappears again. I've got a headache now, but I will re-look over my code to see if there are logic errors.
I originally had dialog2 and form1 (the form1 was acting as dialog1). But The thing was that I do not how to give properties of a dialog to a form (i.e. not make the user be able to click other windows while this form is open) IF I could have code that says Me.bringtofront (which I have tried) didn't work though. If I apply this command to a form I get an error:

error: Please make form1 not visible. something a long those lines. But what I don't understand is form1 was never open.

It's been better programming in VB than it has in C#, but I don't know how to link button subs (BTN_Deal_Click or BTN_Deal; I can't decide which one will work) to one another. For example, after the code in BTN_Deal has been run, the program is supposed to wait for the user to click either the Hit or the Stand button.

I am trying to make a Chess multiplayer game in Visual Basic. Its a two player which will be played in a normal way and not even over LAN. So far, I am done designing the board.
My logic is: First, on clicking any square, the click event handler will check whether a piece resides on that square. If not, then it checks if a piece is to be moved to that square. If both are negative, then it does nothing.
Now, the problem with this is, how do I code the click events? Also, I have represented the board using a 2dimensional array. But how do I update the positions after every move? And how do I check whether legal move is being executed? One more thing I want to add is whenever a piece is clicked, the possible legal squares should be highlighted.
For this, what I did was, for every click event on any square it checked if there was a piece. If there was a piece, then it highlighted all possible moves for that piece using If-Else-If logic, but it turned out to be too cumbersome and too long. And another problem which arose was, how do I know that if the user clicks an empty square to move the piece there?
I am using Visual studios 2010, And what I am trying to do is make a card game, and I have some ideas for how to put a lot of it together however I am having trouble getting started with making the cards to begin with.So I need something to call to represent the cards with numerical values with ace being 1 and king being 13.

I want my program to prevent users from typing in letters that are not provided in the text box and to allow them to type in the random letters that are provided.
I'm doing a pacman game and im stuck on how to make the pellets. This is the code i have so far.I was thinking of maybe making a picturebox for every pellet and then make an if statement that if pacman goes on a pellet it disappears and he gains a point. But this would be a VEERRRYYYY large if statement and im sure there is a better way to do it.

But is there a possibililty to make sure your form is absolutely topmost.. Or make another program/application not topmost so that yours is.
My questions is only about the topmost not about the rest of the application because I have made everything already.
