VS 2008 - Balloon Tooltip Show Invalid Filename Characters
Apr 11, 2009I am using a Balloon tooltip to show the user which characters are invalid as a filename. I use the IO.Path.GetInvalidFileNameChars array and convert each character to a string, before appending it to a "Invalid filename characters:" string.

The result is not pretty: How do I get rid of the 'non-visual' characters (they are probably newlines, backspaces, null chars, etc) so they don't clutter up the list?

Jul 9, 2009I was wondering if its possible for VB to display all available COM ports that are open. he reason that I ask this is because this program will be run on various computers where the COM port will not always be the same. I have a text box now that the user can choose which com number he/she wants but if the wrong one is entered, the program crashes rather than displaying an error message. Feb 21, 2012I was playing with VB.Net yesterday using Visual Studio Express (VSE). I am trying to get a feel for the language. One thing that struck me was the fact that VB's entry point, Sub Main(), is written inside a Module, as opposed to inside a Class like in C#. At least that's how it appears in the books I'm reading. That got me thinking. Is it possible to change the entry point location from a Module to a Class, or for that matter to have Sub Main() completely outside these two constructs?
I search the internet and found out that VSE indeed allows one to changed the entry point through the project properties. So I set the entry point to Sub Main() and tried compiling the "Hello World!" project locating Sub Main() inside a Class construct. Well, that didn't work. I tried changing the name of the class to match the project name, but that didn't help. I didn't bother try putting Sub Main() completely outside a module or class figuring that would be impossible. However, while looking through various post in this forum, I got the feeling I gave up to soon. So here are my questions:
1. Can the entry point be within a Class/Form construct or completely outside any construct for that matter?
2. Can the entry point be some other Sub (e.g., Sub MyMain)
If the answer is yes to anyone of these questions, where do I set the option to make this work?

DataSet(ds) : ProductID, ProductName, PurchaseDate, Amt, BalanceQty.
The problem is that: Showing from dataset or entering new records into the dataset is no problem, but am not able to save the modified dataset into DataBase. SqlCommandBuilder failed to generate the corresponding INSERT, UPDATE command as the dataset has multiple base tables.

Sep 8, 2009i am pulling together a cash register that will allow both bar code product entry and manual key entry.imagine if you have a tin of beans in front of you, in a small corner shop they would probably type "47" and then hit "Produce". Fairly straight forward as I have the button Produce to act upon my code and update my salestrans.mdb but,if you scan the bar code I want the same form to handle both 'real' actions, (i assume that keyboard emulation barcode scanner includes "ENTER" after providing 13 digits)....
Q. in perhaps a long winded way i want to know how to kick off an event based on the "ENTER" key being activiated by the barcode scanner)?i do not want to have to hit any buttons if i am scanning bar codes.

1. Does bar code reader generate a keydown (or keypress) event for each of the digits of the entry? For example, if the barcode read: 1234567890, does that mean that there will be 10 keydown (or keypress) events for that single barcode that was read?
2. I have read from the posts that the best way to differentiating keyboard vs bar code input is to analyse the time between keystroke (for less than certain number of milliseconds).

Sep 27, 2010I need to change the Text property in several menu entries, for example to display several of the last files that were opened in my App.
I save the names of the last files opened, in the proper sequence, in a file that is called when my App starts.
When the App starts, the names stored in the file are assigned to the menu fields, such that the user only has to click on the desired file to load.
When the user opens a file not listed, the new name is added at the beginning of the list, and the file names are re-assigned to the Text property of the menu entries.
This works fine in VB6, but when I re-assign the string in the Text property, some menu entries are updated, but some are not.
Deleting An Entry From A Text File?
Apr 5, 2012i have to make a program thats a telephone directory. All the information is in different text files. The user has to be able to delete and add people to the directory, i have made it so they can add peple no problem but im having a hard time with the code for deleting them. The questions requires that they only type in the persons name and then they are delted but in the text file they are listed as Fred,123-1234 so when they hit delete the person does not get deleted becuase it is registering there full name as Fred,123-1234 i need it so that it just sees the word Fred and deletes it heres the code. I cant figure out how to do it itried using a query but that didnt work either it just looped infinitely.

For example, I have an triangle area program in wich I ask the user of the program to insert the length of the base and height of the triangle in a textbox. But what if he inserts a letter or something else, like a sign....my program will crash...
I know that one method would be to use On Error GoTo but I don't know how. If maybe you can direct me to some link or you could explain how do I handle errors, I would be grateful. Maybe you can even show me other ways to avoid errors from the user input.

VS 2010 Limit Text Entry In DataGridView?
Jul 21, 2011Okay, I've got a datagridview in my WinForms app that auto-builds the column list from a datatable schema. It's working fine, except that it allows the user to enter values too long for the database field. For example, I have a "name" field that is defined in the Sql-Server database as a varchar(50). Is there any way to limit that cell (column?) so that it only accepts 50 characters? Right now it lets them enter anything and throws an exception later.
