VS 2008 : Are Spaces In A Masked Texbox Not Really Spaces

Jan 1, 2010

I just changed a control on a form from a masked textbox to a normal textbox because I wrote my own code to validate the data. I'm trying to clear the leading spaces that were created for this column in an Access database using the LTrim function and it doesn't work for some reason. The column is " :30" in the table and when I LTrim it and save the changes, it's still " :30" , not ":30". Is that leading entry not a space character?

Data Errors In File After Write?

Jul 4, 2011

I am having problems writing correct data to a file. I create a string of characters (approx 5000 bytes long). The string is a mixture of text characters and numbers converted to bytes. I then:

a) write the string to a readable text file

b) display the string contents to the console

c) write the string to a file - BDF.bin (I tried both IO.BinaryWriter and IO.StreamWriter but get the same error)

The byte pattern for the text readable file and the data displayed on the console match and for the most part , data bytes in the StreamWriter file are correct (first 4096 bytes are OK) but there are some extra bytes and some wrong bytes. Here is a comparison of byte patterns (hex values character written to the file) starting at byte 4096

Console: 45 44 52 31 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 90 01 00 00

Binary File: 45 44 52 31 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 C2 90 01 00

The byte patterns match, however in the binary file, there is an extra byte (C2).To display the console data, I read one character at a time from the string and display it using hex(asc(mid(string,i,1)))I view the binary data in the BDF.bin file using a hex editor program. I even tried 2 other hex editors and all showed the same byte info.

DB/Reporting :: Data Access Page Errors?

Oct 7, 2008

Using Access I created a few Data Access Pages. These web pages, once opened, work fine to manipulate data as intended, but they keep generating annoying warning messages. There are two messages that pop up every time the web page is accessed. Before the page opens the first message that pops up states: "This website uses a data provider that may be unsafe. If you trust the website, click OK, otherwise click cancel."After pressing OK on the first, the second message pops up and states:"This website is using your identity to access a data source. If you trust the website, click OK, otherwise click cancel."After pressing OK on both messages the page functionality works just fine.I've tried adding password protection to the database and even signing the project with a digital certificate, but I still get the warning messages. This would be fine except there are multiple end users for the access pages and I am trying to avoid the additional confusion this will create, especially since IT has restricted many of the users from editing the internet options.

DB/Reporting :: Data Updating Errors With .mdf File?

Feb 21, 2009

I am writing a simple app using Visual Basic 2008 Pro, and SQL Server 2005 as the backend. However, I copied the database file (.mdf) from another computer onto my laptop. I added it as a Data Source by having the Data Provider as "Microsoft SQL Server Database File" and have it attach the file to the local SQL server. However, it isn't set to copy the database to the output directory every time the program is run for debugging, as I thought that would save time.

Now however, the data update to the database are very wierd. I run the program, add some new data, save it, and it returns the new primary keys properly (that is, it turns from -1 to 4 or 5 or whatever, indicating that the data has been saved). When I close and re-run the application to check that the data has indeed been saved, it reflects the changes and shows me the new data. However, when the program is run again after some time, the changes I made are gone. I'm assuming this is due to some wierd way in which VB is updating the database that temporarily updates its cached or copied database, but doesn't actually change the real database. How do I fix this? I had previously done the same project on another computer, except there the data source was directly the local SQL server, and I had created the database directly on the server through Visual Studio itself, and I didn't face those problems then. Is there any way to manually attach the SQL Server database file (.mdf) to the local SQL server instance permanently, and change the app to use the attached database instead?

Serial Port XML Data Parsing Errors

Jun 9, 2011

I am trying to parse incoming data from a serial port that appears to be XML format but a few problems arise when going from a simulated setup to the real deal. I first made a this program at home using a serial port emulator and com port connector program that reads from a text file and then sends it through the com port, I then read it from the com port it is connected to it. My program is able to parse the incoming XML perfectly fine, I'm using an XML Literals syntax.

The problem I run into is when I setup my program with the device and try and parse the data that is coming out of it. The data I receive sometimes has a few lines of garble before it starts seeing my expected XML. Of course these few lines of garbled text throws me an exception, but even when it appears I'm getting a good clean start of my XML data my program still throws exceptions such as "unexpected end of line 1 line number (different lines)" or "multiple root elements line 1".

Am I going about this the right way? using XML Literals to process my XML string properly or should I use something else that will allow for not well formed XML? or am I just missing something. My device outputs data every 500ms and I can poll my device for stored data. An example of what I am receiving sometimes and what I am expecting is below. "The first few lines of text sometimes appear and sometimes don't" [Code]

Errors While Working With Data On Windows XP (SP3) Home Edition

Jan 4, 2011

We have designed an application designed for storing contact information of students (college study project). The application installed perfectly on Windows XP Home Edition (Service Pack 3). We also installed all the requirements (including .net 4) on the XP machine. But when we tried to work with any form that is linked with data, it pops up an error saying something about invalid casting for system.oledb.data and system.string.What may be the problem? This application runs fine on Windows 7, also loads fine in Windows XP Home Edition SP3. BUT when we open a form that has database linkups the above error pops up. Is it in anyway related to the .net framework? Which is possible our biggest doubt! This is really getting frustrating, as my group has worked really hard on this project. But, our prof., says that the project should work on Windows XP, but he is also stumped, with the reasons.

VS 2008 Dgv / Combobox Case Sensitive Data Errors

Apr 13, 2009

I've hit a small issue on a project of mine. I have a comboboxcolumn on a datagridview and the items list has the items ("enabled" "disabled") as the values (stored at design time). When my sql table gets the value "Enabled" or "ENABLED" stored somehow as it's value then I throw a dataerror.

I am trying to avoid this dataerror, I was told to modify the value during the cellformatting event however with my experience the dataerror fires before the formatting. What is the workaround to this behavior? As a textboxcell type the error is not present, it's all because of the case sensitivity of the "items" list on my comboboxcell

ASP.NET UpdatePanel Timeout And 500 Errors With Custom Errors?

Sep 23, 2011

I have a .net application that uses customerrors web.config module to display meaningful messages for errors. It works without any issues for 500 errors/exceptions caused by non-ajax and ajax components (updatepanel). However, in a scenario where updatepanel's asynchronous request times out, there is no error raised at all. I was able to see the timeout in firebug and come up with a solution that would at least display the error message as an alert and then redirect the user to the 500 error page using javascript but it's not quite doing what the rest of the application does in case of an unhandled errors like these. I basically just want everything to go through "LogEvent" mechanism so based on the severity of the error, it does the necessary work. This 500 error page doesn't have anything in the Server.GetLastError() for these timeout scenarios. Is this an expected behaviour? Can it be changed so I do have access to these timeouts in Server.GetLastError() OR maybe just run this error through "LogEvent" mechanism? Is there a better/more graceful way to handle this issue?

Below is my code to give you an idea, not exactly what I have in my application but pretty close.

Web.Config
<customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="~/Errors/ErrorUnknown.aspx" redirectMode="ResponseRewrite">
<error statusCode="500" redirect="~/Errors/Error500.aspx" />
</customErrors>

VS 2010 Errors When Trying To Produce Reports From Inputted Data, And In The Code?

i'm a freshman and was handed this assignment a short while ago and i'm having extreme difficulty figuring out why i keep getting the following error message whenever i click btnGenerate.Click on the form:Error1: Unable to apply this change while debugging. 'Private Sub GroupBox1_Enter(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles GroupBox1.Enter' was deleted that modifies 'Public Class Form1'. You must revert the change or stop the debugging sessionBasically the assignment is requesting that we build a 'Call Cost Calculator' and since im relatively new to this i've never worked with strings before and also get the follow errors:Warning2Variable 'sCountryBeingPhoned' is used before it has been assigned a value. A null reference exception could result at runtime.Warning3Variable 'sPhonePlan' is used before it has been assigned a value. A null reference exception could result at runtime.

My form codes:
vb

I reals because it's driving me mad and i'm honestly quite literally stuck and can't move on until i get this sorted.

Data Binding - Update The Grid Data By Reading The Array

Apr 2, 2012

Data binding should be an extremely simple thing to manage but I can't find a SIMPLE solution to the following problem.

I have two forms

Form1 contains a 4x4 MSFlexGrid (unfortunately an unmanaged COM object but I can merge cells, which I can't do with a managed Datagrid)

Form2 contains other controls which change the data in the Flexgrid.

I connect the two with a Public 4x4 array. Form2 changes the data in this array. I can update the grid data by reading the array. But how do I bind the Grid to the array so that it auto-updates - which is the whole point of binding isn't it?

.net - Excel Data Export Fixing Number Errors/removing Green Triangles

Aug 8, 2011

After exporting data using a third party component the data in the excel sheet isn't type correctly. Excel thinks that some values are string while they are numbers and a little green triangle shows up.

We've coded the following to fix this:

For Each objCell As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Range In objWorkSheetReport.Range(objWorkSheetReport.Cells(1, 1), objWorkSheetReport.Cells(Me.RowCount + 10, Columns.Count + 10)).Cells

[Code].....

This removes all those little green triangles but is really slow.

Is there a faster way to convert a Range of data quickly so the green triangles don't show up?
