Remotely Kill / Close Other Application?
Apr 1, 2011
I'm designing dekstop application with client server architecture with vb.net with mysql database. My question is how do i remotely kill/close my other application? for example two user are logged to the system, user a want to kick the user b out of the system. Kick/close the GUI and the app not just the connection.

I've been doing some research on controlling another exe without Process.Kill() .
The reason why is that I want to have a main controller program that starts and terminates my other exes . I can't use Process.Kill() it just kills my exe without giving it a chance to save data or handle the form closing event . I want to separate my program to multiple exes to prevent a scenario which is if one of the exe hangs , all the other exe hangs .
When the termination event or signal is received , then the exe would do a rollback or handle the closing part to prevent data loss etc .
So far , I've only found some methods of doing that .
1) using TxT files to communicate between exes.
2) Inter-Process Communication (IPC) using name pipes .

I have a simple Windows Form that hosts property controls at runtime. When the user clicks Close [X] I want to keep the window and its contents alive rather than killing it by handling the FormClosing event, canceling the event and simply hiding the form.
That's fine but at close of the application I need to actually close the window. I implemented the below but it feels kludgey. Is there a simpler, more clever way to handle this situation? (The form's controller calls KillForm explicitly after it receives a closing event from the main window.)[code]...

I'm running a VB.NET application 24 hours a day on a dedicated machine. I'd like to be able to receive status updates and also control/debug the application remotely (i.e. from another computer via the internet). It would be an advantage if the communication was lightweight (in terms of bytes sent and received) so I can control the thing without needing a fast internet connection. Also, I'm running the application from within the IDE at the moment because there are some unhandled exceptions and it's easier to debug this way. It would be nice if I didn't have to compile it and catch all the errors. What is the easiest way to set something like this up, and what do I need to be aware of in terms of security?
Update:To clarify what input I need to give the application - in theory, none. If all went to plan I'd just set the application off and reading some sort of log would be fine. The problem is that it is unstable (mainly because it calls a web service which is very unstable and returns all sorts of weird things) and therefore seems to need constant input on my part.
It was my thinking that the only way I could do this sort of debugging remotely is by catching every error I could, reading the log, and somehow instructing the application to behave properly in future.

My desktop application is developed in VB.Net and can be run through two types of users, one who install it on their local machine and execute locally.
Second type of users will run the application remotely from the server.i.e. Application will install on the server and user will execute that application from client side. Server can be a Citrix Meta Frame or any server accessed through Remote Desktop Connection. I want to maintain single exe for both types of users.
Is there any mechanism/way through which I can come to know programmatically whether application is running locally or remotely?

How can I check if an application is running, and then kill it?I REALLY need it urgently because some random antivirus program attacked me, and it doesn't let me do ANYTHING! So I am planning to put the program on startup and kill it when it starts running.

I'm currently in the process of building a text editor type program, and have run into a brick wall. I haven't done VB in years, so I may just need a little reminder on some things. I have coded everything so far as far as opening files, saving them, changing fonts, colors, etc. However, I'm looking to add a Close button to my menu strip that will just close the currently opened file, and not the entire program, while also ask the user if he/she would like to save before closing the file, and then if they select yes, it will show the save dialog, and if not, it will go ahead and close the currently opened item.

When I launch my application, and press the "X" button on my app, or my quit button which deploys: me.close It will not fully close the application. Like the instance is still running in Visual Studio or if you go to task manager processes you can still see it there. How would I get this to fully close?

Ive seen that people use Form.Close() and Application.Close(), but what if I have many forms, and I may have forgot to close one of the forms correctly, is there a way to exit the application that actually checks to make sure that all the processes related to the program are closed first? I read on another forum that Application.Exit() is a bad way to close the program, and I found an example code of how to do it the right way, but Ive never found this anywhere else before.

I have a problem here I hope someone can help me out. I have this application in which I show information about workplans. It has a Main Form which show the general information and the activites that are going to take place during the execution.
The application has the ability to "attach" documents to the activities. I have created another form (and MDI form) that I use to show the documents (pdfs) when a user clicks on one of the documents attached. The problem is that when I close the form that shows the documents, it ends the application and I don't know why. It should just close and leave me again with the Main Form. Can someone tell me why is this form terminating the app. Is it because is MDI or what?
