Application Closes When Close A Form?
Apr 6, 2009
I have a problem here I hope someone can help me out. I have this application in which I show information about workplans. It has a Main Form which show the general information and the activites that are going to take place during the execution.
The application has the ability to "attach" documents to the activities. I have created another form (and MDI form) that I use to show the documents (pdfs) when a user clicks on one of the documents attached. The problem is that when I close the form that shows the documents, it ends the application and I don't know why. It should just close and leave me again with the Main Form. Can someone tell me why is this form terminating the app. Is it because is MDI or what?

I have been making a webbrowser for a while now, everything works well, except i am unable to make the 'open in a new window' button work right. So far i have managed to get a new instance of my form to open with the right url, but i am unable to keep that new form open when the orginal parent form closes.
Code:
Private Sub WebBrowser1_NewWindow(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.ComponentModel.CancelEventArgs) Handles WebBrowser1.NewWindow
e.Cancel = True
Dim Href As String

I have a problem about shown event. I have a login form and a main form. I start the program with main form. then I used frmMain.Shown() to control the login form. When main form is shown, it checks Win. Registry if username and password is stored there. Ä°f yes, login form comes and wants me to sign in and if not, it calls first login form to create a record in Registry.The problem is that; When I click on X (close) button, it closes the login form, but Main form is still running and I can use it without sign in. How do I solve this problem? Or is there any other way to controls if Registry has the record or not

I've made a Windows Forms Application that runs fine. It has some buttons that open child forms, which can simply close again without any problem. As I need the form to be in a dll, I changed the application type to a class library and added an extra project containing an exe-file that only references the main form in the dll and shows it. So far so good...
The main form is basically a tabcontrol with a bunch of controls, buttons among others. Five buttons on different tabs use the same handler to open a child form. When I click the button on the first tab everything works fine. The form opens and when it closes, only the child closes. When I click any of the buttons on the other tabs, the child form opens and when it closes again, both the child and the main form close...
I am stumped, especially since all buttons use the same code to open the child form and everything appears to be completely identical, yet the results are not. Below I have pasted the code that opens the main and child forms. I am undoubtedly not looking in the right place, but I also have no idea where to look anymore, let alone what to look for...
The code opening the main form:
Public Sub StartProgram()
'Load the form and show it
Dim frmProgram As frmMain = New frmMain
[Code].....

I have a login form that when the user clicks OK and logs in successfully it loads the main application form.However when I show the main form and close the login form, the app is firing the shutdown event.Is this because the app thinks that the login form is the only form open and thus fires the shutdown event?Here is the code for the login routine, when I call Me.Close() at the end is when the shutdown event is fired. Am I doing things out of order? I used to do it this way in VB6 with no problems (I know they're a lot different).Note, it's nothing in frmMain either, this happens no matter what form I try to open.
Private Sub btnOK_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnOK.Click
'iLoginResult = 0 : Success
' 1 : Invalid user name or password
' 2 : Other login error

I have a main form that has a button with which a smaller form is shown. Think of the smaller form as the Find/Replace dialog in many applications, such as Notepad. It's important that the form is (what I believe is called) modal. What I mean is that it always stays on top of the main form. I ensure that by calling the Show method with "Me" as the owner argument. Whenever the small form loses focus it will not disappear into the background but stay visible (albeit out of focus). If you don't understand open up Notepad and have a look at the behavior of the Find/Replace dialog.
Here's my problem: instead of actually closing the form when the X is pressed, I want it to simply Hide itself, so its position and the state of any controls (checkboxes etc) is preserved automatically.To achieve this I simply cancel the FormClosing event and Hide it:
vb.net
Private Sub Form2_FormClosing(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.FormClosingEventArgs) Handles MyBase.FormClosing
[code]....
To show the form, I use the following (note the (Me) to make the main form the owner of the form; this ensures that it remains visible even when it is out of focus):
vb.net
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Form2.Show(Me)
End Sub
Now. When I run my project, and open the Form2 (small form), then hide it again (by 'closing' it), I can no longer close the main form (Form1)! It seems the main form cannot close when the small form still exists (albeit invisible)...?? When I don't use the Me argument in the Show method, I don't get the behavior I want. I know I can set the TopMost property to True but that will also cause it to become visible on top of all the other forms, even windows not part of my application.

I've been looking around the internet and I haven't really found any solution to my problem. Is there a way to perform a function when a user closes the form either by pressing the X button in the top right hand corner? I am using a database that saves what form the user is currently looking at, and when the application is closed I want to say "offline."

I need to update a table when my application closes. This is with the user name of the person exiting the app.
This works fine when the user closes the form from the main menu exit button where I have written code to update the table. However if a user exits from another form the main form is not closed (as I thought it would be) and the code that updates the table consequently does not run.
I have tried entering on other forms under the FormClosing event but this does not seem to run if they click the X in the corner of the form.
How can I get that code to run when a user exits in some other way.

I ran out of ideas and couldn't find any reference about it so here I go... I need to keep a secondary application wich is not related to my c# project always running in background. So if this secondary application crashes or someone else close it manually it will automatically re launch again via my c# app.
I have no clue of how to accomplish this one, I mean checking if this application closes by something external to my c# app.
