Retrieve Active Directory Environment And Session Information?
Jul 20, 2010
I'd like to be able to get and set the different information for a user in Active Directory on Windows Server 2003 under Environment and Session tabs through a VB.Net application. I am familiar with System.DirectoryService but I can not find the correct attributes for these particular tabs. For example, I'd like to check "Connect Printer at logon" or set "Idle session limit".I've found the "ms-TS-Connect-Printer-Drives Attribute" and other attributes like it but they are only implemented on Server 2008.

I've tried many forms of adResults.Property("displayname").ToString() and the like but just can't get it to work right.Anyone have any ideas how to do what I'm looking to do?Public Function ValidateActiveDirectoryLogin(ByVal sDomain As String, ByVal sUserName As String, ByVal sPassword As String) As Boolean

I currently have need to modify the Active Directory information for all of my users. At the moment, they have phone and mobile numbers stored in the format xxxxx-xxxxxx. The first x is ALWAYS a 0.
What I want is to do is enumerate all users in a chosen container in AD (with the option to include or exclude subcontainers), then read in any phone numbers they may have (bearing in mind not everyone has a direct dial number or mobile). I then need to replace the initial 0 with +44 (0) and write that information back into Active Directory.

I successfully retrieve a user (call it userA) from Active Directory that exists in Domain A in the users subdirectory. I then try to remove the user from AD by doing
dim theParent as DirectoryEntry = userA.Parent
theParent.children.Remove(usera)
This fails because when I look at the parent node in a Watch Window in Visual Studio, all of its members say COMInterop.Exception.

I am new to VB; am developing my first VB program; and require some help in getting started. I wish to query information from an Active Directory server using a Visual Basic 2008 console application. I have .NET Framwork 3.5 installed and VB 2008 Express installed. Do I need to install anything else (any additional libraries or components)? Is VB 2008 Express capable of accessing information from Active Directory? Where can I find information about the classes and methods I should use query information from Active Directory?

Is it possible (I'm sure it is) to validate a user's credentials against Active Directory without using Directory Services?I'm building a Browser-Based WPF application which requires users to login to and get validated via Active Directory. Since .Net 4.0 (or maybe 3.5) accessing Directory Services from an Application requires the application to be fully trusted. Since IE won't provide full trust to an application if it doesn't have the signing certificate in it's cert store, the application is refused startup permission.
If I don't use Directory Services, then I can leave the application as Partial Trust and validate my user's credentials without having to install a certificate on each user's machine.

I created a function that allows me to login to my web service. I created a session here and added some values I retrieved from a stored procedure.[code].....
My question is: I have a default.aspx and a master page, how can I redirect the user when their session is active? For example, the default page tells users that access is forbidden untill the login/register.Do I have to use the form load handler for default.aspx or the masterpages' load handler? How do I check weither the usersession is active?

My website allows users to type a code into a textbox. If a recognized code is entered, the page will refresh and display a welcome message to that user, otherwise an error message will come up. I am putting their manually entered code into a session so that their name can be pulled up. I can't get the session to stay between pages.
I have been told to make sure EnableSessionState="true" but that doesn't work on master pages.I've been told to check IIS settings, but I can't because I don't have permissions to it. Tried SessionState cookieless="UseUri" and somehow that created a never-ending redirect loop.I have debugged the functions and they DO return values. The textbox DOES go away when I enter a code and the welcome message gets displayed with the user's first and last name, so I know that works.I've checked to make sure there is no Session.Abandon code anywhere in the site.
I added a Watch to every instance of Session("IB") on the page and they are filled correctly when I enter a code into the textbox. Then when I click on a link to move to another page, the debugger stops on the very first line in my Page_Load, Dim ib As String = CType(Session.Item("IB"), String) and all of my watched IB variables immediately turn into Nothing.
Here is the code behind for the master page:
Imports System.Data
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Imports System.Data.OleDb
Partial Class MasterPage
[code]....
More:sessionState has been changed and the site still acts like it has been, the ConnectionString must not have anything to do with the problem with the 2nd database losing it's session. It's gotta be something in the code behind, I can't think of what else could be wrong with the web.config.
<sessionState mode="InProc" timeout="20"></sessionState>
We also found out that the session variable is still there, it just won't display the user's information when it's connected to the back up database connection.

I am working on a GUI for a simulation program. The simulation program is a single .exe which is driven by an input file (File.inp placed in the same directory). The Original.inp file functions as a template from which the form reads all the values into an array. Then it changes these values reflecting the changes done by the user in the form. After that it writes all the new values to File.inp. By pushing the "Run" button the Simulation.exe file is executed. The folder structure looks like this:
[Code]..
Ideally I would supply only the GUI, the user would select the working directory and then the GUI.exe would create an input folder and extract the Original.inp and Simulation.exe in the appropriate locations. So far I have only managed to include Original.inp and Simulation.exe as "EmbeddedResources" in my VB project and I have let my code create an input folder in the working directory chosen by the user.
how I can extract the .inp and .exe file into the correct directories? I've searched on google, tried File.WriteAllBytes and Filestream.WriteByte but did not get the desired results. The problem with File.WriteAllBytes was that I could not point to the embedded resource ("Simulation.exe is not a member of Resources" and with Filestream.WriteByte I got a 0 kb file.

Currently, in my web application I have a listbox that gets populated client side (via java script) with a set of ids -- we'll call this page 1. Server side, I am populating a variable with the ids and passing it through a query string to another page -- we'll call it page 2. Now, I have a previous button on page2 which allows me to go to page 1. I'm trying to figure out how to repopulate the listbox on page 1 with the values previously selected. I was thinking of just storing the set of ids in a session variable and using it client side to repopulate the list box. Can anyone advise on how to access a session variable client side?[code]...

I am using VB2005 and trying to put an application together. What it needs to do is retrieve information from a binary file, possibly alter that information, and put it back into a new file. The file is a .wav file with data appened to the end. There is an additional section at the end of the .wav file which stores xml data.I have found that if I open this in a hex editor and make a 1:1 swap on any of the bytes that the application that the file is for can still read the XML.If I tried to add or remove characters from the XML then it would not read. I located a header byte and incremented it to resolve this.
This worked as an excellent bandage to do conversions where the data always needed to be changed to the same thing. What I have been asked to do is build logic that allows for different things to happen depending upon what data is contained within the file. The method that I am currently trying to impliment is:
Read through the file with a system.io.binaryreader
Searche for a bytestream that will signal data is coming
For example:
If System.IO.File.Exists("C: est estread.wav") Then
Dim findit() As Integer = New Integer() {&H3C, &H55, &H73, &H72, &H44, &H65, &H66, &H30, &H31, &H30}
Dim i As Integer[code].....
And then extract all the data till the end of element marker "<" It seemed like there should be a better way and I was looking for some insight. If I proceed with this method, I will have to read the file one time to gather the information and then a second time to write it all out with the header modified for length. This is my first experiene with working with binary files in this way. Also,I've been experiementing with building a string and slapping it back in at the end using the binarywriter.write(string) method.I noticed that it was putting in header characters before the string. These seem to change if I change the length of the string. At one point it was d0 07. Later it became e7 07. Does anyone know of a way to prevent this header from being inserted?
I tried a for each loop to grab all of the characters from the string, convert them to a byte array and deposit the byte array into the file, but the header remained the same. When I write the byte array generated from a system.io.binaryreader I do not get this header.

I'm having a weird problem with active directory and the display name attribute. I can create an AD account with no problems, the account shows up, I can log on as the account, everything appears to be working as intended. The problem is, our company requires that the display name be in the form of "Lastname, Firstname". Thats all fine and dandy when you create an AD account use the MMC snap-in, you type in the users name as "Lastname, Firstname" in the display name field and when the account is created, the display name shows as "Lastname, Firstname" as you would expect.
The problem I am having is this, whenever I create an AD account programmatically, I can't for the life of me get the display name to show up as "Lastname, Firstname". The displayname property is set as such, checking the AD account using the MMC snap-in shows the display name is set correctly, but when looking at the list of user accounts, the account is always displayed as the users username. The account name I am using is "Test User", see pic below.
if you try to rename the account, the field it tells you it is editing is called Full Name? I can't find a property in AD even called Full Name so I am completely confused, here is a picture of me trying to rename the programmatically created account, as you can see, the display name field is set correctly even though it doesn't display that way. And of course, after renaming the account as seen below, the display name shows up correctly as "Lastname, Firstname"Here is the code I use to create the account, just for reference.
Public Sub CreateActiveDirectoryAccount(ByVal sUserName As String, ByVal sFirstName As String, _
ByVal sLastName As String, ByVal sUserPrincipalName As String, ByVal sPassword As String, _
ByVal sHomeDrive As String, ByVal sHomeDirLocation As String, _

Dim domain As DirectoryEntry = New DirectoryEntry("LDAP://DC=domain,DC=com", Nothing, Nothing, AuthenticationTypes.Secure)
domain.RefreshCache()
