what is the correct way to archive my work? That sound pretty dumb. Let me try again. I begin a new project and design a form and then start adding code then save my work.Tomorrow I want to make changes to the project an design - how do I save and keep track of my form and code versions?

All the refactoring tools for C# and VB.Net that I have seen only consider the source code in a single visual studio solution.For better or worse, our large (many related programs) system is spread over many solution files, however:All the code is below a single windows folder. Our nAnt based build system, builds all files in a windows folder to produce a single dll (bit more complex then this but not important for this question).Therefore ALL ".cs" and ".vb" files below the single root folder are part of the system.
So I am looking for refactoring and reverse engineering tools that take a single folder as input and act on all files below that folder.(The tools may need some help to decide what "public" and "internal" means, however most of the time "internal" means "in the same code tree" when a "code tree" is a folder that contains code and any child folders.)Now I am being greedy, I would like the tools to create a lot of all the refactorings that have been done and to be able to replay the refactorings. Then I could try out ideal and if they work, throw away my code, get the latest code, you do the refactorings and checkin the code before anyone else changes the files. (Likewise for when branches need merging)
(VS.Net 2005/VB.Net)Why is it that VS.Net does not create LOCAL backup files of edits? Is there a way to make it do that?I accidentally overwrote a day's worth of changes by attempting to do a manual mergeoutside of VS.Net.Is there a way to make VS.Net create backup files of your changes each time you save?Delphi does it using an extension of .~pa for your source files and .~fm for your form files.This way, if your system crashes, which VS.Net is certainly going to do, you wouldn't lose the changes you made since your last save point.I know, I know, I shouldn't have been doing the merge outside of VS.Net but I had my reasons and now I[m paying the price.I just wished VS.Net was a little better IDE than it is because, frankly it sux. I am forever waitingfor something and not very productive using it. Hey, I'm getting good at watching paint dry because that is what developing in this tool seems like.

So far i can copy files from directories including sub directories and that part works fine, my main problem is copying only the most recent / modified files to the backup folder, currently it is moving all the files each time.

View 4 RepliesI have multiple file upload boxes on a form in my mvc3 application. Request.Files shows 3 files when I put a break point in the below function and look at it.. Problem is other than coding a counter and using a select case I dont see a way to handle saving each file name to the database column it belongs to... Is there away to assign the variable on the fly I guess you could say So that the foreach loop would drop the file in the correct column. Ie handoutFile1, handoutFile2 , handoutFile3, Etc. As it stands the below will overwrite the filename in handoutfile1 every time the loop is gone through. I thought about throwing a counter in the loop and just put a select case on it to assign the db column based on the counter number. Seems like a cheap work around though. [Code]
View 2 RepliesA routinely used application suddenly became impossible to access, with and error code indicating that the "VB Backup\Backup" file cannot be found. When I click File Open, the projects display as always. I select the application, double click the .sln file--and nothing happens. When I try to access the .vb file in Solution Explorer, it says "Cannot find VB Backup\Backup Files."
What are the Backup Files, when are they created, and why would they suddenly be "gone?" Is there any way to rebuild the Backup Files? I used the application last night and it worked fine. Today it can't be opened because the Backup Files cannot be found.
I have backups of the application folders, but get the same error message. Cannot be opened because the Backup FIles cannot be found.
I am writing a backup program that zips files. Using some sample code I have the following that creates a zip file. Problem is it does not get any subdirectories or files. Where am i going wrong?

Alternativley, there is another component to the zipping dll that I could probably bypass the above altogether. It is: FZ.CreateZip(DestFile, SourceFolder, True, "", "") Where DestFile is (Output stream as system.io.stream). I'm trying to read all the files, directories, sub dir and files, etc from a specific location, let's say 'My Documents' into Destfile in which the FZ.CreateZip zips the file. FZ is FastZip which is from icsharpcode.net. They have c# examples, but that's greek to me. I'm trying to just learn VB!

I have a routine which populates a DataGridView. I generate the data on the fly in arrays and the populate the datagridview simply by saying

I am not saving the data to log files. I only display the results at the end of my routine. When I close the project the data is lost.I am trying to understand why one would bind data. Would you do this in the case where you are saving the data to a file and you want the datagridview to update when the file is updated or loaded again at another time?

This seems to work, and even when I debug VisualStudio says that the file changed, but actually it doesn't. I think the problem is in the Save() action, but I don't know other way to save it...
I wish to save some data but dont want to use database. I have studies that XML files can be used for that. But I have no idea abut XML.
What is the difference between using XML and database?
I'm having some problems with people saving text files using my program, but only people using Vista. Since I don't use Vista myself, I'm not sure what this is but it's not a problem on any machine running XP.
Note that my file saves just using the standard Savedialog box and Filestream/Writeline commands.
From what my customers are telling me, the save dialog comes up fine and there is no error as the file appears to save, but when they look for the completed text file, there's nothing there.

First time user on here, basically have been teaching myself VB and I enjoy it quite a bit! Basically I have a program now that has the File Drop-Down Menu with Open and Save options. I want to open and save in a .txt format. The open command will need to place the text in TextBox1 ; and the Save command will need to take the text from TextBox2 and save it as a .txt. I have gotten to the point where it will save it to a specified .txt file, but I would like the user to be able to "browse" the computer for where to open from and save files to.

I am working on saving excel objects to a directory of my choosing. I am able to use a folder browser dialog to select the save location and the saveas method within the excel interop and i am able to create a file in the folder i select with the name i choose. The issue is that when i later go to open that file it is blank. no workbooks no worksheets etc . Just a seemingly blank file in the proper location with the proper name.
It should be noted that if i single click on the report icon to open it the microsoft browser window does show a tiny preview of what seems like the correct report.

In our database we have gigantic tables (it was initially built 20 years ago). We are on the process of developing it.
Some tables contain rowversion and optimistic concurrency. We were wondering if there is a way to just correspond rowversion to the modification of some specific columns, but not all of them. In Normal Case, T-SQL which is generated then would be huge.

I have an issue with globalising my application settings.I have 5 Projects in one solution and I all 5 of my projects use the same connection string to connect to the DB.before I had added any additional projects, I could control this quite easily from the settings designer (Project > Project Properties > Settings) this will work well for one project.How can I share my settings across to all projects, and if the connection string is modified, save it back to the settings file.does VB support settings at the Solution Level?
