View 6 Replieswhen the user runs the program for the first time, it will ask for his name. After his name has been entered and he clicks Ok, the main menu comes up. From there he can click Start to begin the first level of the game. After he finishes that level, I want the application to save his progress so it knows what level he last finished. Then when the user decides to quit the application entirely and restart it, I want the application to skip the name dialog and go straight to the main menu since he already has a saved game. Then when he clicks start, it will start off with the last level he finished.
I also added an option in the main menu where the user can reset all his data. So next time the application starts, it will ask for his name as if it was starting up for the first time.
I wrote a program to save a ini file and read it in visual basic 6.0 but i want in visual basic 2008 the code i used in vb6 is this:

View 3 RepliesWhen I go to settings in my application/Program and on the form I have a ColorDialog1 want to to save the back color from the ColorDialog1 That I have chosen. And in my settings I have (Name: BackColor, Type: System.Drawing.Color, Scope: User)
the code on the form I Have is...
ColorDialog1.ShowDialog()
Me.BackColor = ColorDialog1.Color
My.Settings.BackColor = ColorDialog1.Color
My problem is fairly simple. What my code is doing to start with is opening the form by loading a bunch of things from a database. After all the questions are done (because it is a questionnaire) it is meant to save the current score and the username that was entered before, for the sake of programming I have hard-coded a username and score however I think because I am using a different command builder it keeps giving me the same error!
(I am studying A-Level so that might explain the simplicity of the code)
Public Class AdditionTest
Dim inc As Integer = 0
Dim con As New OleDb.OleDbConnection

I'm trying to save a setting that keeps what background image I'm currently using.If it's an external file, there is no problem, i can just get the .location and set it in a String setting to store it.
But, if I want to store an image resource as a setting, how do i do it?I know i can store rawdata, like bitmap information, but then i can't set that type of data to the my.background.
I don't know if the question should be: "how do i reference resources", but the my.resources.resource.methodsList doesnt contain anything that seems to be of use.
Is it possible to initialize a My.Settings value in a Visual Basic Deployment Project (VS 2008)? I can add the Radio Button Dialog to prompt the user, but I don't see how to use that to set the My.Settings value.

Whenever I modify a file in the IDE in Visual Basic Express 2008, and then press the "Save" or "Save All" button, the "Save As" dialog opens, then says that a file of that name already exists and requests confirmation of the save. This didn't happen in Express 2005 as far as I remember.

View 3 RepliesThe company has been using Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 2.0 for approximately 2 years. During that time we released several versions (4.x.x) of our program to the public and were able to preserve the user's settings using My.Settings.Upgrade.During the past development cycle we upgraded the program to Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 and changed the version to 5.x.x. Now, when a user upgrades from 4.x.x to 5.x.x they lose all of their settings.However, in all upgrades after that point (ie 5.0 to 5.1) all the user's settings are once again preserved.I checked C:Documents and Settings<USER_NAME>Local SettingsApplication DataCompanyName and it contains two directories:
ApplicationName_Url_aaa ApplicationName_Url_bbb
where aaa and bbb are 32 character strings. All of the user.config files for the 4.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_ Url_aaa directory. All of the user.config files for the 5.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_Url_bbb directory.Based on this information it seems like something changed when we converted our program to VS2010 and Framework4 that is now causing a different 32 character string to be generated. However, we have been unable to track it down.
I'm having trouble getting the objects of the PageSetupDialog and the PrintDialog to persist in my.settings Is there an example of this anywhere? Seems like it should be something there is a boiler plate for so I can see where I have gone wrong.Added a System.Drawing.Printing.PageSettings and System.Drawing.Printing.PrinterSettings entries in my.settings but even trying to save these form the results of the dialogs they show as nothing with out a error.
I need to write a paper on the comparison between (Microsoft Visual studio 2005 to develop web applications using asp.net) and (visual basic and Netbeans to develop j2ee applications using java).I need suggestions for good webpages,journals or documents which can help me out here. I have to write at least 1500 words so any suggestions are welcome.
View 1 RepliesIn a while loop, I am writing a progressively increasing integer value (between 0 and 100) to the Value attribute of a ProgressBar control, when it disappears from the window in which it resides. I have verified at the time that it disappears that the Min is 0, Max is 100, and Value is a valid integer in range.
View 9 RepliesDoes anybody know which version of Visual Studio 2010 contains the full set of Visual Basic SharePoint Templates? I am about to embark on a project to create Visual Web Parts to be used in a SharePoint report.
At the moment I am using Visual Studio 2008 and even though the WSPBuilder is installed none of the relevant SharePoint templates are present.Having searched SO and the web, most advise to install the templates via the Visual Studio command prompt: devenv /installvstemplates
Alas the Visual Studio command prompt is also missing from my VS2008 installation.So, the question remains: which version of VS2010 contains what I need for pain-free SharePoint development? There is a rather large price different between VS2010 Professional and VS2010 Premium, so can anyone tell me if the cheaper version (VS2010 Professional) contains all the Sharepoint templates?
How do I disable the background compiler for Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2008?
For my sins, I have to work on a large VB.NET project and it often locks up for 20 seconds at a time whilst doing the very helpful background compilation
I'd rather work blind between compiles and be able to do some work.
I am just wondering how I can add Direct X references to Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2. I cant find them in the .NET reference list, or the reference list, or anywhere. I downloaded the Direct X SDK for August 2009, but I can not add the .dll files to the reference list. Is there anything I can do to add them? I need the references for programming reasons.

I have Visual Studio 2008 Professional and I'm trying to make it so I can click a button to send the application to the System Tray and then click the icon in the System Tray to make the application come back.
Can anyone provide me a method or sample code to do this?
when the user clicks on the add button another form launches, which enables the user to add student info such as name, address, course, start date and end date, this information is then written to class when the ok button on that form is clicked, and then displays the data on the initial form in data grid. the user can add multiple entries and they are all displayed on the intial form and a the data grid is populatedwhen any of the rows in the displayed grid is selected, and the update button is clicked then the same form launches as the previous one and but this time its in the update mode and pre populates the form with the inital values.
View 3 RepliesI am very new to Visual Studio Application Development. I'm mostly a DB guy. I used Visual Studio as a Report Designer, not much of an .Net guy though I can understand it. I am now asked to create a .net application and I'm trying to create a "Hello World" starter app. I opened my Visual Studio, click File-New Project and all I see is Business Intelligence Projects and Other Project Types. My step-by-step guide says choose Visual Basic, Windows Forms Application. But I can't see it as an option.
