View 2 RepliesI got some code that im try to make search and text file and replace it. The code im using to replace it with is whatever the user entered in txtURL.text. Here is what i have
Dim strFile as String
Dim result as String
strFile = "C:\test.txt"
oRead = IO.File.OpenText(strFile)
result = Replace(oRead.ReadToEnd(), txtURL.text, "1F.php")
oRead.Close()
Is this writing it back to the file also....I think that might be the problem, not sure..

View 3 RepliesI have to find a string in a huge text file ( ~ 50MB) and then replace it.Since it's quite huge I tend to open the file and then read line by line, and then replace the necessary line(s) (rather than "readall" the file of course).My question is how to replace the whole line?Let's say I found the line that should be replaced . I know I can create a copy file and copy all lines into there ... but I'd prefer to replace the line in the original file rather than creating a copy instance.
View 5 RepliesI would like to step through each *.txt file in a given directory, open it, find and replace all, perhaps a thousand, occurances of a given string (e.g. "00/00/00"), then close and save file, and step to next one in the directory to do the same find and replace. I've been looking at filestream classes and regular expressions but don't see a clear way to do this.

For example:
Dim rValue As
String = sproc.ExecuteScalar()
' rValue now has the XML string <indracio fire height=23, width - 6>
/* This is the string that I want to search. Replace the words "indracio fire" with the word "lucion time"
How can I search this string for the words "indracio fire" , and replace with the word "lucion time" ?

View 3 RepliesI have a non standard text file, ie its not delimted etc, its pretty much free flowing. What I want to do is to search for a specifc string eg. "xyz123" and then replace it with what a user types into a text box, lets call the text box and its contents "txtreplace".
I am trying to replicate a find and replace function essentially, but will need to tailor it later on down the line, but this will be a starting point.
I have thios code that will load a php file (text file) into a sting via streamreader then its supposed to find and replace a portion of the text and write the changes back out to the file via streamwriter. I put my code together and after running it look at the file and it's unchanged. After looking closer it appears the problem is the find & replace operation I am doing on the string. Here is my code:

The format I need is a group of numbers in a text file and it looks like this and it will always look like this:xxxx x xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxx x xxxxxxxxxxx xxxx x
The problem is that it can be anywhere in a text file so I cannot search by a particular line.
How can I search for this type of string format in a text file?
So I am trying to create a Win App to make copying files using Robocopy easier and eventually other tasks. Basically what I have so far is a Button that calls the Sub Robcopy_EXE. There is a tab on the form with 100 check boxes, one for each terminal, that will be designated by the user and a check box to determine if you want a detailed report or not from Robocopy. I also have a text box for the user to input the first 3 octets of the site IP Address. The check boxes and Input field are used to create string "Terminal_input" which is what runs Robocopy in CMD. Robocopy logs its progress to a text file that I have labeled "Status.txt". That is as far as I have gotten.

View 3 RepliesI would like to read an HTML file, search each line to see if it starts with </head>. Then add the centering code after it. That line at destination file should read:
</head><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="2" width="760"align="center"><tr><td>
After this I don't care to search for anything. Just read from source and write to destination. I know there are programs out there to find/replace text in series of files but I am not allowed to use external programs.
What is the code to replace text in a document. For exaple if my document had the text "The Dog Jumped over the fence" how would i get it to change to "The Cat Jumped over the fence"
View 3 RepliesI have a 133 Mb file which contains almost a million records. Currently, a user loads this file into KEdit (a great editor for working with large files) and changes occurrences of a dollar sign $ to blank and takes negative numbers represented as such with parentheses and changes that to a negative sign. That is, (5000.23) would become -5000.23. So the leading ( becomes a - and the trailing ) becomes a blank. I believe the only occurrences of ( and ) are around the numbers I want to change, so I don't have to worry about changing something that should have been left alone. Using VB.NET in Visual Studio 2008, is there a "painless" way to do this other than reading the file one record at a time and searching/replacing and writing the record out? While not really painful, I am worried about how long that will take (to run, not to code ). Is that a valid concern?
My long range goal is to automate many of the routine file preparation tasks my users do. We get an input file from 15 clients. The file can be in any format the client has chosen to give us, and it is our burden to reformat any errant fields into an acceptable format for insertion into our database.
I've figured out a way to load a php file and then search and replace if it contains one of the following:[code]Is their a way where I can load the the php file and also load a txt which contains the string i want to replace, so the exe dont actually save the txt.Replace. This way the user of the app can define the contents of the search and replace and it wont run out of memory.
View 1 RepliesI am needing to open up a file, it is a kml file, and I am wanting to search for a particular line and the replace some of the lines following that.
Dim file As New System.IO.FileStream(kmlFileName, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.ReadWrite)But I don't see any means in which to actually go through the file line by line in order to search for my criteria.

Chairman Joe Smith has announced a new plan to decrease expenditures by outsourcing the planning of the new dining hall. Smith states the current project managers do not have excess time to commit to this new project and this will be less costly than hiring a new or contract project manager.
Now what I am trying to do is take any instances of Chairman Joe Smith, or Joe Smith, or Smith, or Chairman Smith and put that in a link to his profile/bio. Using any string methods that I know of (string replace, string builder, add text to before and after a matching string) I would run into the problem when scanning for Smith and then any of the other names.[code]...

For some reason I cannot get the %%LINK%% and %%NAME%% Replace() calls to work properly. I checked to see if it was encoding-related, so I made each file UTF-8. And also used the forced encoding overload of ReadAllText(String, Encoding) and still no dice.
I have the below code which searches through the file and replaces one string with another. However I would like to run this procedure on all files in a folder I was trying to use something like

For Each file In f.Files but I haven't figured out how to put it together.
Sub Main()
Dim fso, inputFile, outputFile
Dim str As String
[code]....
How to replace string in file, or clean file ( i don't want delete, and make new)?
