Serialize A Data Structure And Pass It To Another Report Via Parameter?
Jan 15, 2010
I'm trying to serialize a data structure and pass it to another report via parameter, and this line of code:
Dim s As New System.Xml.Serialization.XmlSerializer(GetType(System.Collections.HashTable))
Produces this error:
An error occurred during local report processing. The definition of the report '/myReport' is invalid. There is an error on line 22 of custom code: [BC30002] Type 'System.Xml.Serialization.XmlSerializer' is not defined.
How can I get around this? I have been able to use fully defined .NET classes in other lines of code, including the following:
Dim outStream As New System.IO.StringWriter()
and
Private colorMapping As New System.Collections.Hashtable()

I want to pass parameter to a crystal report viewer. I added .rpt file to the report viewer, but I can't get the parameter field to bound the variable.
How can I pass parameter to that viewer?
I added crystal report file to the viewer, but in the report file contains 4 parameters. I tried to use CrystalReportViewer1 to get parameter function, but i can't find parameter function.
I also tried to find parameter field from properties there. How can i do it with VB.NET? I want to pass parameter from main page form to report viewer form.

Can you look at my coding and let me know what I'm missing or doing wrong?I have a SSRS report that is called from a ReportViewer control and the ProcessingMode for this control is Remote. The report also has 1 parameter in it's DataSet.In the code I placed a MsgBox to make sure the code is finding the parameter and returning the parameter name. I am trying to stick the value of 10 into the parameter for playerID 10. Data for this player does exist.
I believe I need to add some more code to make this work but I'm not sure what else to add.
When the code executes the report is displayed but no data is shown in the report.

I'm writing a test application in order to figure out how to serialize a structure to XML. I can not get the following code to work for me and it's not obvious to me.
The following defines the structures I am attempting to serialize. I think I have the xml decoration correct - but the errors I'm receiving (see below) don't really give me much information.
Imports System.IO
Imports System.Xml.Serialization
Public Module modTestSerialization

Is it possible to serialize and deserialize a structure?
I think it isn't because the code I use will not work for a structure but it does work for other data types like an array, string etc

I am trying to figure out a class/struture to handle the following JSON format:
{
"ReturnData": [
{
"id": "msg2DoesNotExistName",
[Code]......
I may or may not have Data for ReturnData and SetValue (one or both at a minimum). I am trying to let the serializer handle most of the formatting without having to check for empty sections and single-item arrays.

Public FilesNames() As String
Public FilesBytes()() As Byte

The problem that is the result file size when saving structure of image 200KB, will be 400KB
All generated bytes after number 200 are clean (zero value).

I desperately seek for a code sample to serialize an array of structure elements to a XML. To serialize a simple object of a structure I used:
Private Sub saveEntries()
Dim FS As New FileStream(path, FileMode.Create)
Dim XS As New XmlSerializer(GetType(personEntry))
XS.Serialize(FS, entries(0)) 'serialize first entry of an array - success
FS.Close()
End Sub
Structure looks like this:
<Serializable()> Public Structure personEntry
Dim name As String
Dim d, m, y As Integer
End Structure
Private path As String = "data_file.xml"
Public entries(2) As personEntry
But how to apply this to an array?

I'm trying to implement a grid based RPG style inventory (teaching myself by making a game keeps me focused ) and I have an array of "item" objects. Part of this array is a picture box, which I then lay out in code to display the inventory. how to detect when one of these picture boxes is clicked. However, I'm having a little trouble getting my head around the Directcast command.
When a box is clicked, I would like the function 'boardclicked' to pass over not only the picture box, but the whole object it is associated with it, so I can print these values out the screen (detailing the objects name, value etc) [Code]. As you can see, this passes the picture box element of the object, but I'd like to be able to pass the whole structure, so I can retrieve the other associated values.

I'm working on a project where I'm experimenting with building and implementing plugins. I have a structure called "sensor" in the plugin that contains several elements. I would like to be able to return that structure to my main program through the interface, but it doesn't work. The plugin works fine if I'm passing strings or other variable types, but when I switch from strings to my structure, I get a couple of errors. On my main form where I try to call the function, I get the error 'value of type iMyPlugin.sensor cannot be converted to frmMain.sensor'. In the plugin code, I get the error 'GetSensorReading cannot implement GetSensorReading because there is no matching function on the interface'. Is what I want to do possible, or is there a better way to do what I want?

I've got this Function:
Public Class QueryStringUtil
Public Shared Function GetQueryStringValue(Of T As Structure)(ByVal queryStringVariable As String) As T
Dim queryStringObject As Nullable(Of T) = Nothing
If queryStringVariable <> Nothing Then
If HttpContext.Current.Request.QueryString(queryStringVariable) IsNot Nothing Then
queryStringObject = CTypeDynamic(Of T)(queryStringVariable)
End If
End If
Return queryStringObject
End Function
End Class
When I try to call it like this:
Dim intTest As Integer = QueryStringUtil.GetQueryStringValue(Of Integer)("stuff")
Dim stringTest As String = QueryStringUtil.GetQueryStringValue(Of String)("stuff")
Dim datetimeTest As DateTime = QueryStringUtil.GetQueryStringValue(Of DateTime)("stuff")
stringTest gives me the error:
'String' does not satisfy the 'Structure' constraint for type parameter 'T'.
I want our other developers to not worry about having to convert a class to a structure or some stuff like that when they call this function. I just want them to be able to put a standard type in the (Of T) and have it work. I don't mind writing in extra calculations to achieve that. The other problem is I also need the function to be able to return an actual null value, so I kind of need the queryStringObject as Nullable(Of T). Which means I have to have T as Structure otherwise it tells me that won't work. So looks like if I change what T is I need to run some calculation to delcare the var as nullable or not.
I tried overloading this method so that one returns T and one returns Nullable(Of T) like so:
Public Shared Function GetQueryStringValue(Of T As Class)(ByVal queryStringVariable As String) As T
Public Shared Function GetQueryStringValue(Of T As Structure)(ByVal queryStringVariable As String) As Nullable(Of T)
And naturally it's telling me it can't do that since they just differ by return types. Is there anyway to overload this? I really don't want to have two functions.

I want to calculate the average for each student. I have made a function to do this. What I am having trouble with is how to pass the array of test scores to the function.

Public Const intMAX_NUMTESTS As Integer = 5
Public student(intMAX_STUDENTS - 1) As StudentData

I am currently still learning to use VB.Net feature. Currently I am trying to execute a .exe file where there will be passing parameters to run the script. E.g. this how it works on the command prompt line:
C:Documents and Settingsproject1>textfile.exe file1.txt file2.txt file3.txt file4.txt
Above line will be able to run the textfile.exe script.
I am using VB .Net to create a User Interface where user will be able to use the 'OPEN CLICK' button to choose the files (which will display on a textbox) and click on a 'START' button to run the program. I managed to find a code - process.start() feature, however it cant seem to work..
Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click
Dim MyProg As String
Dim executable As String
executable = "C:Documents and Settingsproject1 extfile.exe"
MyProg = TextBox1.Text
Process.Start(x, MyProg)

I have various shape objects, and I want each unique shape to implement a saveToDB method that simply calls a DB object that implements a Save method with an object as its input paramter. This DB.Save method will be a long case function that implements the proper SQL commands based on the type of attributes possessed by the input parameter object.how do I implement the SaveToDB method in my Shape class? Is it something like this:
Function Shape.SaveToDB
DB.Save(Me)
End Function
The goal here is to let each shape save itself without it knowing anything about database operations; I want to isolate db-specific information in my intermediary DB object, so the DB object will have to figure out what type of object wants to be saved into the SQL database and then execute whatever SQL instructions are needed. And then if I override the SaveToDB method in each shape subclass, I can avoid the case statement entirely, replacing it with a series of unique methods such as db.SaveCircle (ob), db.SaveSquare (ob), etc., sincle the caller already knows what it is.

Is it possible to pass a DataRow as a parameter to a sub?The following example will (hopefully) make clear what I want to do.
Code:
myDataAdapter.Fill(myDataSet)
For Each myDataRow In myDataSet.Tables.Item(0).Rows
MySub(myDataRow)
Next
And the sub:
Code:
Private Sub MySub(ByVal drData As DataRow)
End Sub
I get an error at design time: Error 2 Expression does not produce a value.
