Getting First Chance Exceptions Stop My App

Jan 15, 2011

When an exception is thrown in my app, I expect the debugger to stop running and enter debugging mode, but it does not. Instead, I just get a message in the Immediate Window ('A first chance exception ...'), and the program keeps on running like if nothing happened. However, the sub (in which the exception was thrown) is exited, so statements after the exception are not executed. Since this sub makes the initialization of my program, running becomes very unstable. How can I tell the debugger to stop execution when an exception is thrown? On the 'Advenced compile options' page I don't have 'Target CPU'. Maybe it's that I have only VB Express? If I tick the 'Thrown' checkbox in Debug > Exceptions, execution stops even if I have a catch for that exception, and I don't want that.Until now I used VB 2008 on 32 bit, and everything worked fine, but since I moved to 2010 64 bit I just can't get it right.

Stop Multiple Dialog Boxes Displaying?

Jul 14, 2010

I have a very annoying problem and I'm trying to find the simplest solution possible, but I seem to keep complicating it.

My program displays a custom dialog box using the ShowDialog function (I create this form using a New constructor), but while my program waits for input in the dialogbox, my program continues to run other code, (I'm assuming initiated from other messages, but I still can't find good information on this, so as an aside to this topic does anyone have a reference about this), and arrives at this same point where the dialog box is to be displayed and displays it. So I end up getting a flood of dialog boxes.

My goal is prevent this excessive amount of dialog boxes. If the program arrives at this dialog initiation point I would like it to wait/pause until the first dialog box is finished.

AxInterop<ctrl>.dll And Interop<ctrl>.dll Versions Not In Sync With Control.dll??

Jun 1, 2009

I am using a 3rd part dll file (SolidWorks EModelView.dll, COM file) that has a version of 9.2.0.128. When I add it to the resources for the application, however, the AxInteropEModelView.DLL and InteropEModelView.DLL references show a version of 9.0.0.0. When I install the application on a client machine and try to run it, the application says it cannot find AxInteropEModelView.DLL version 9.2.0.128!

Exceptions Must Be Exclusive - Exceptions Will Ever Occur Simultaneously ?

Dec 26, 2009

I've just skipped around a few inbuilt VB classes' methods which throws exception. of all that i've came across, methods may throw multiple exceptions but ALL of them are exclusive, meaning there is no way 2 exceptions will ever occur simultaneously, yea and i was trying to make my class throw 2 exceptions simultaneously, hence this question, must all exceptions be exclusive?

VB Compiler Is Unable To Recover From The Error: System Error &Hc0000005& (VB Internal Compiler Error)

Jul 1, 2011

This error first appear to occur randomly. Steps to recreate:Open Visual Studio and load a solution (some files automatically opened) - this is when the problem occurs Close all open files Restart visual studio and load solution (no issues)Open Exactly the same files again, restart visual studio and load solution so files open automatically (problem occurs!)

However, when trying to narrow it down to a single file (that is automatically opened when the solution is loaded), I couldn't reproduce the problem. Now with all the files open again the problem doesn't occur!!! So it looks like it is fixed - though this happened before and eventually the issue came back.

I think it is to do with one of the user controls with DevExpress controls on it - when the error occurs, the designer displays the error. Though I can't reproduce it at the moment to confirm that.

Is The C# Compiler Smarter Than The .NET Compiler

Feb 9, 2012

If I look at the IL that is created in Linqpad for the two following code snippets, I wonder what happens here.

In c#
int i = 42;

results in the following IL code

IL_0000: ret

whereas in VB

Dim i As Integer = 42

it is

IL_0000: ldc.i4.s 2A
IL_0002: stloc.0

Apparently, the c# compiler understands the the value is never used and thus simply returns nothing. In VB.NET the actual code is translated. Is that due to differences in compiler optimization or is there anything else at work?

Update: Just to clarify this - I just enter this one line into LinqPad and look at the IL it creates (most definitely by running the respective compiler). There is no program.

Change Cursor To Panning Hand?

DB/Reporting :: Wizards Vs Hand Code

Apr 20, 2010

I have been a programmer for almost 14 years and have worked in SQL, VB, VBA and MS Access. I am making the transition to VB 2008 and as you can imagine, it is frustrating. One of the new things to be in VB2008 is working with data. They have made it easy to setup datasets and output data to a form. In VB6, I never used the GUI data tools, I always custom programmed recordsets and wrote loops to output the data. Then, I wrote my own code to update, insert or delete the data. With VB 2008 I dont have to do this anymore, but is it a better practice to hand code than rely on wizards.

I also noticed I dont have as much control over the data with using the wizards, for example. There is 1 insert statement defined for a table adapter. Lets say I wanted to perform a slightly different insert based on a condition. I cant do that anymore right?

VS 2008 : Evaluating A Poker Hand?

Apr 8, 2009

We are working on a poker game as a class project. My part is to evaluate and then determine the value of a players hand. We are evaluating from highest to lowest (ie. determining whether the player has a straight flush, 4 of a kind, full house, flush and then going all the way down to a high card only "worthless hand"). My part is evaluating the 2 pair, 1 pair, and nothing hands. The hand will be a two-dimensional array with the row(0 thru 12),column (0) containing the numeric "face" value of the cards and the column(1) containing the value assigned to the suite (1=clubs, 2=diamonds,3=hearts,4=spades). I have NO IDEA where to even begin this evaluating procedure.

C# - Swap Left And Right Hand Sides Of A Set Of Expressions In VS

Mar 13, 2009

Is there a method to swap the left and right hand sides of a set of expressions in Visual Studio? I have a decent sized set of data that needs to be stored in an active record. In order to pre-populate the form fields on the page, I have already written the following [Code]

Is there some sort of the method (built-in functionality, macro, etc.) that I could use to swap each side of the expression such that the data is saved into the active record as opposed to read from it in order to perform a database insert? For example, after highlighting the above code and running the macro, it would become:[Code]

Since the number of columns in the database that this active record encapsulates is rather large, it seems like most of this typing could be avoided with a simple automated process. Obviously this wouldn't work 100% because sometimes there would have to be type conversions (e.g. int to string) but for the most part I think this would save a lot of time.

Pagination Not Appearing On Right Hand Side In DataGrid?

Now my problem is Pagination alignment, i have pagination on my DataGrid but even setting

<PagerStyle HorizontalAlign="Right" Mode="NumericPages"/>

doesn't bring pagination to extreme right of datagrid, rather it brings pagination on right of first column of datagrid(my datagrid has 9 columns) see attached pic

Disable Richtextbox Showing Hand Cursor Over Links?

Apr 8, 2010

I'm writing an vb.net application so that the user can type text to be added to a website. I'm using a richtextbox and I've added the facility to hyperlink selected text. This all works, but when the mouse cursor moves over a hyperlink it changes to a hand; how do I stop it doing that? It's confusing for the user as it looks like clicking the link will do something and it makes it awkward to correct spelling within the text of the hyperlink.
