Asp.net - ServiceController.start() And ServiceController.stop() Are Throwing Exceptions?

The following code is throwing Exception. I don't get what mistake I am making in the code. i think it is of some security rights issue. If so, how can I give the security rights to any user or application to access this windows service programmatically?
Dim sc As New ServiceController
sc.ServiceName = "DataLoad"
If sc.Status = ServiceControllerStatus.Stopped Then

I've just started developing with .net CF 3.5 for windows mobile 6.5. I'm using VB 2008 as my IDE and I am having trouble with ServiceController.
Here is what I have so far:
Private Sub Stop_Service_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Stop_Service.Click
' Toggle the Messaging service -
' If it is started (running, paused, etc), stop the service.
Dim sc As New ServiceController("MessagingService")
[Code] .....
The problem is with the bit in bold. The debugger says the following:
Error 1 Reference required to assembly 'System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' containing the base class 'System.ComponentModel.Component'. Add one to your project.
I've checked and the system object exists but it is marked in the object browser with brackets as "Compact Framework". I have tried to remove this and replace it with one not labeled with "compact framework" and the error does go away but then the application doesn't run in the WM 6.5 classic emulator Producing a "failed to load all components. Please make sure you have enough space in storage memory or try reinstalling .Net CF error".

Consider the following method that stops a service:

Try
Dim service As New ServiceController(serviceName)
Dim timeout As TimeSpan = TimeSpan.FromMilliseconds(timeoutMilliseconds)

I agree that for domain model code that using the "traditional" unit testing approach makes the most sense as this would lead to a design that is easiest to maintain. However, for code that deals with the .net implementation of Windows API related stuff (file system, services, etc), is there really an advantage to going thru the extra work to get "traditionally" testable code?
It's hard for me to see the disadvantages of using Microsoft Moles for things such as ServiceController (or the File object). I really don't see any advantage of doing the traditional approach in this case.

Several of my overriden Equals methods have started throwing Invalid Cast Exceptions -
Unable to cast object of type 'System.DBNull' to type Common.ResolveUser'.
This occurs when binding List (of T) (where T is of type ResolveUser in this case) to a combo.
Equals Method:
Public Overrides Function Equals(ByVal obj As Object) As Boolean
Dim i As ResolveUser = CType(obj, ResolveUser)
If i.UniqueResolveID = UniqueResolveID Then Return True

I never got into detailed error processing too much when I played in VBA/VB6 a lot. Mostly then, if you ran into a user error (such as some input of theirs failing a validation test of some kind), you popped a MsgBox() with some error information and the critical (or warning) icon, and safely aborted out of the code
In .NET, my reading basically points to exceptions as the end-all in error handling. It looks to me that if you know a spot of code where a user can screw up, you're supposed to catch it with either try...catch blocks (for things like data conversions), or standard if...the...else constructs for other things, and then throw a new exception if needed.
Isn't throwing an exception essentially a forced crash of a program in a sense (granted, you get the option of continuing)? Or are exceptions geared specifically for things like data conversion errors and other "things that shouldn't happen", and resume use of MsgBox() and friends for minor user screwups?
Consider the case of where you have a TextBox that is only supposed to accept numeric data (or heck, just a specific set of characters). Barring some other trick that lets you restrict that field (let's just assume it's freeform, programatically), it would seem a bit of a waste to throw new exceptions everytime they type in an invalid character, or even if the error checking doesn't happen until they press a submit button (like on a webpage). Popping a MsgBox() seems more sane in that case.
So what's the straight dope on exceptions and throwing new ones on user errors? How about if your program also exposes a programmatic framework? Bad usage of one of the programmatic functions definitely seems like new exception territory to me.

Is there a command that will stop the execution of my program?
I have a service that is processes an exchange account via telnet every 10 minutes. During one point of execution the application could possibly have a response from the telnet session when there are NO e-mails in the folder, which would look something like this[code]...
So is it possible for me to just stop my application at that point since there's no point in continuing if there are no e-mails in the account?

When an exception is thrown in my app, I expect the debugger to stop running and enter debugging mode, but it does not. Instead, I just get a message in the Immediate Window ('A first chance exception ...'), and the program keeps on running like if nothing happened. However, the sub (in which the exception was thrown) is exited, so statements after the exception are not executed. Since this sub makes the initialization of my program, running becomes very unstable.How can I tell the debugger to stop execution when an exception is thrown? On the 'Advenced compile options' page I don't have 'Target CPU'. Maybe it's that I have only VB Express?If I tick the 'Thrown' checkbox in Debug > Exceptions, execution stops even if I have a catch for that exception, and I don't want that.Until now I used VB 2008 on 32 bit, and everything worked fine, but since I moved to 2010 64 bit I just can't get it right.

what is the method to tell when a user starts or stops a process? My company makes a software package that allows a tie in from vb. I want to make a package to allow me to start and stop the software remotely and to monitor when the software is running or not.Ideally there would be some sort of event in windows when the user starts or stops the software. I imagine there is some sort of way to do this with a timer, but I am sure that windows will have some sort of event process when the program starts. I have googled this and looked through the xtremevbtalk forums for this but I am not quite sure as to what keywords to use.
