View 5 Repliesi'm writing an application, and i use registry to save my settings Don't criticized me, cos i know VB for some time now and its the best way to save settings, in my opinion.. But that's a different discussion..So i have saved settings in registry, and i want to add a button for user to save settings in *.reg file, but with correct sintax, that double-clicking on the reg file, the values ar restored in registry.This is RegEdit.exe backup. I need to be able to save like this with VB.Net:
Quote:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareExEdzy SoftBattery Status3.0]
"warning_show_cable_disconnected"=hex(b):01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
[code].....
I searched the web for solution, but with no result..BTW i need to backup not one Value, but hole set of values in one Subkey..
I am working on moving applications from Windows 2000 to new server Windows 2003 R2(64 Bit). I noticed that there are some VB programs and config files for those programs have been placed in Windows 2000 Registry. Some other applications are using them from different servers.Why do we use registry here? How can i move these to registry in windows 2003? Can I just move these or do I have to write VB programs to place them in 2003 registry?

View 1 RepliesI have a program which will search the entire registry for a keyword and display all the matching keys/values in a listview. The user can then select the desired keys/values and delete them. Since this a program that deals with registry, I want to give the users a way to backup the registry before they do the delete operation. I would like to know what is the best approach for this.
3 questions here:
1- Should I backup the entire registry ?
2- Should I backup only the keys/values that the user has selected in the listview ?
3 - Can I have the sample code or appropriate URL's which describes this.
I am trying to Backup and after that will try to restore the registry on windows Vista and Windows 7 with vb.net 2008 using regedit throw shell, but it give me an error that the regedit.exe doesn't exist.

I'm trying to figure out a way to save all the stored procedures on a SQL Server 2005instance to text files. One of our developers has made a huge amount of StoredProcedures,and theseneed to be managed somehow between our test / integration and production environments. I know how to retrieve / run / create stored procedures, it's just the "save-to-file" i need.

View 6 RepliesLet us start with...yes I am new to SQL and really only a lightweight programmer. So I am assuming that I am doing something horribly wrong. I have spent days on the MS forums looking for an answer to no avail. So I am going to give as much info as possible. Application language is VBExpress 2010 and using SQLExpress 2008. The Database contain basic tables, no stored procs, no views, no diagrams. The Application has configured diagrams where one of the tables has inner joins... Tables origninally built in SSMS, but have been altered in VBE.

We are currently using Access 97 as our database. This resides on the remote farm server (which is a Windows 2008 R2 server). We are using a front end vb6 exe which accesses the back end data.Occasionally we are getting corruption to our database and we have to make sure everyone exits the software to allow us to repair/compact it. There are 2 physical servers, each running 2 virtual machines. When the user logs onto the farm using RDP, they go to one of these 4 virtual machines.We are getting all kinds of corruption, some where # characters have been inserted into the top of one table, some where the indexes are corrupted, and some where access needs to repair the database.
View 1 RepliesI know similar questions have been asked/answered, but after looking across the net for 2 days I still haven't really seen an answer to the following question.rst, background info: My application starts at windows start as a user checkbox option (by using the run key in the registry.) I don't know if it is usual or not, but when the app auto starts on windows start, no saved user settings show up on the form (but they do when starting the program manually after windows is already running). I've tried both HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. In case anyone needs or wants it, my code for accessing the registry is:
Dim Reg As Object
Reg = CreateObject("Wscript.shell")
Reg.RegWrite("HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMICROSOFTWINDOWSCURRENTVERSIONRUN" &

I am writing a backup program that zips files. Using some sample code I have the following that creates a zip file. Problem is it does not get any subdirectories or files. Where am i going wrong?
Dim azFileNames() As String = Directory.GetFiles(SourceFolder)
Dim objCrc32 As New Crc32()
Dim zipStream As ZipOutputStream
[CODE]...
Alternativley, there is another component to the zipping dll that I could probably bypass the above altogether. It is: FZ.CreateZip(DestFile, SourceFolder, True, "", "") Where DestFile is (Output stream as system.io.stream). I'm trying to read all the files, directories, sub dir and files, etc from a specific location, let's say 'My Documents' into Destfile in which the FZ.CreateZip zips the file. FZ is FastZip which is from icsharpcode.net. They have c# examples, but that's greek to me. I'm trying to just learn VB!
lately I've been experiencing LinqToSql + Sql Server Express 2005, and it was a great journey (muddy) anyway .... I'm at the point that I want to make a Backup/Restore for the database backup for SSE is as easy as a simple copy paste of the mdf file, but the problem that I can't copy the file while the server is using it, server doesn't let the file go untill the app is closed or after about 4 - 6 minutes of idle time,

I am using SQL server express 2005 as an backend. I created a backup file programmatically. If I use same server , then it restore the data successfully. however if we try to restore on different server, then it fails. and throw following message:
"The Backup set Holds a backup of a database other than the existing 'DatabaseName' database. RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally."
On both server, Sql server instance name and database name is same. How can I resolve this error?

View 1 RepliesWe recently upgraded our job server to Windows Server 2008. We have jobs we run manually in a folder (c:Custom Programs). Some programs are console programs others are have a gui. This one program has a gui.It also has a progress bar that shows the progress of the job when you click the go button. Of course it spawns a thread to do the processing. This thread creates a log file to write errors and other things too.
The problem is when the program goes to create the log file an access not authorized error is thrown. I checked the permission on the folder. All users are allowed to create/edit/append/execute. Pretty much everything except take ownership. Also, there's nothing that denies anything. So I see no reason why this isn't working. We can get this to work by using the run as administrator option when we first run the program. However, we don't view this as unacceptable solution. My only thought is the spawned thread isn't getting the same permission set as the program. Am I correct or does something think it's something else.

I am doing a simple backup of sql server database through VB.NET form. It gets executed well but I want to display details of successful query execution in a label (i.e. time taken, database size etc.)
The message which I want to display in label is like "Processed 296 pages for database 'aaa', file 'aaa' on file 1. Processed 1 pages for database 'aaa', file 'aaa_log' on file 1. BACKUP DATABASE successfully processed 297 pages in 0.522 seconds (4.660 MB/sec)."
This result we get in sql server query window when we execute backup query there. I want to get this message in label when I fire backup query from Windows form in VB.NET

I have a little problem with application setting in VB.net 2008. I want to switch main server and backup server connection string with combobox. [Code] It did change the Application Setting connection string in the main form when combobox1 was changed. But the problem comes, when child form was called. On the child form there is DataGridView with Dataset using application connection string. Even the Backupserver was selected on the main form, child form dataset connection string doesn't change. I don't know how to pass the current connection string to child form dataset although it is set to use application setting.
