View 4 RepliesNot sure if too many people know this, but the following line will cause an error:
GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_"
....if the length of GroupName is less than 3 characters. I always thought it would simply return whatever characters in GroupName, but no, it errors. I must be thinking of the old VB6 days. So, I now have to change the code to:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) Then
If (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then
Note that the two comparisons need to be on separate lines. If they are on the same line, such as:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) and (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then then the code will still fail as the length command is executed at the same time as the substring command- which will cause the error when the GroupName length is less than 3.Just thought that those of us not aware of this should be!

How do I write an expression to calculate all characters of each row by my own defined value to each character = all the A and B and C and etc. will be as 2 and all I and J and whatever ... will be 1 so I need an end result of the total.

For each character of this string I want a new character out of the string and then remove the character from the list of characters that still maybe used for other characters. It may not get the same character, you could basically just call this encryption, but it's not what I am making. I don't want to waste my time doing this one hour while VB can do this for me in <1 second.
"Testing.BSMain, Text: Start Page"
I would like to substring the value above and returning me only the value after the ": " in vb.net. How can i do that?
I'd like to be able to match a specific sequence of characters, starting with a particular substring and ending with a particular substring. My positive lookahead regex works if there is only one instance to match on a line, but not if there should be multiple matches on a line. I understand this is because (.+) captures up everything until the last positive lookahead expression is found. It'd be nice if it would capture everything until the first expression is found.
Here is my regex attempt:
@@FOO[(.*)(?=~~)~~(.*)(?=]@@)]@@
Sample input:
@@FOO[abc~~hi]@@ @@FOO[def~~hey]@@
Desired output: 2 matches, with 2 matching groups each (abc, hi) and (def, hey).
Actual output: 1 match with 2 groups (abc~~hi]@@ @@FOO[def, hey)
Is there a way to get the desired output?
How would you select the last part of a string starting at a specific character count. For example I would like to get all text after the 3rd comma. but I get an error saying "StartIndex cannot be less than zero."
Dim testString As String = "part, description, order, get this text, and this text"
Dim result As String = ""
result = testString.Substring(testString.IndexOf(",", 0, 3))
Basically I want to retrieve all possible substring matches with n characters from a string, Here's my initial code but it only returns 2 matches.[code]...

View 2 RepliesSo I have an ASP.Net (vb.net) application. It has a textbox and the user is pasting text from Microsoft Word into it. So things like the long dash (charcode 150) are coming through as input. Other examples would be the smart quotes or accented characters. In my app I'm encoding them in xml and passing that to the database as an xml parameter to a sql stored procedure. It gets inserted in the database just as the user entered it.
The problem is the app that reads this data doesn't like these characters. So I need to translate them into the lower ascii (7bit I think) character set. How do I do that? How do I determine what encoding they are in so I can do something like the following. And would just requesting the ASCII equivalent translate them intelligently or do I have to write some code for that?
Also maybe it might be easier to solve this problem in the web page to begin with. When you copy the selection of characters from Word it puts several formats in the clipboard. The straight text one is the one I want. Is there a way to have the html textbox get that text when the user pastes into it? Do I have to set the encoding of the web page somehow?

I want to explicitly inform my user that they are not allowed to use any characters from the extended ascii character set (128-255). When I try to create a string of these values using the following [Code] It outputs them fine, with the exception of a bunch of blanks in certain areas(I am assuming these characters are unprintable), but I noticed that when I hover over the value of sVal in the VS, the tooltip/quickview of the value is written nicely on one line. Any ideas how to remove characters that would appear to be blank spaces (unprintable) when outputting this list?

I am trying to figure out how to make a .SubString get the characters from right to left not left to right.Say if a user enters 123456789 in text box 1 and I use textbox1.text.SubString(0,2) it will display 12. But, I want it to get 89.I do not want it to get 98, but 89. I tried textbox.text.substring (0, -2) but that just gives an error. So if Gold is entered it gets ld

I'm trying to create a valid RegEx replacement pattern for correctly formatting specific .XML file names. Specifically, if a file name does not begin with a prefix, let's say, ACE_. If the XML file name and extension does not begin with ACE_, prepend the string ACE_ to the file name. For example, if my input source string is the following:
Widgets.xml
I would like to execute a single RegEx Replacement that would result in the string being:
ACE_Widgets.xml.
Conversely, if the string already begins with ACE_, I would like it to remain unchanged. Also, how can I include the pattern ".xml" to ensure that the string pattern for the file name and extension ends with ".xml" in the same matching pattern for the RegEx Replacement pattern? As for the match, I have some luck with the following:
^ACE_{1}[dD]+
Which indicates there is a match for the pattern if the input string is ACE_Widgets.xml and no match if the string is Widgets.xml
The RegEx pattern would suffice, but if you need to know the language in which I'd like to use the replacement pattern is in .NET 4.0 in either C# or VB.NET.

The line ex. Some text:my number some text-my number2. I want my number appended to txtFound, and my number2 appended to txtFound2. With my code only number2 can be appended correct.
View 4 RepliesMy homework assignment is to create a project where a user enters a password that must be at least 3 characters long with at least 1 number and 1 alphabet character. After that the password has to be encrypted so that vowels become X, numbers Z, and it reverses. For example, a password of CS2301 would be ZZZZSC. There's supposed to be Loops to extract 1 number/letter at a time and search for them in the string to validate, and I don't know what to do. The form itself has a Text Box to enter a password and a label to display the new one, and a Go button.
This is what my code looks like so far.

I am working on a sub that essentially needs to open a text file, and replace all instances of a certain character with a unicode character. I'm trying to do this by reading the original text file byte by byte, converting it to a character, and then either adding that character to a memory stream or writing the unicode character to the memory stream. Then I'm saving the memory stream to the original file.

But when I iterate over the characters, the diacritic marks come out as separate characters (as I would expect since this is unicode)However, a u character is different than a u plus an accent for the purposes of this program and needs to be distinguished.
View 1 RepliesEssentially I am trying to replicate the Windows 7 (In-Windows) activation key TextBox form. The Form where it will auto capitalize letters, remove or deny all non alphanumeric characters except dashes every 5 characters that will be auto-input.I assume this can be done with a fairly complicated replacement Regular Expression but I cannot seem to create one to fit the needs.
This is an Example of what I have right now, but it creates an infinite loop as it removes all characters including dashes, than adds a dash, which changes the text and removes the dash again.
