View 7 RepliesCan I access an MDF file through VB without SQL or will I need SQL to access it? I wrote up an app to keep track of my to-do's and it works great on my PC...which has SQL. However, I want to run it on my laptop, which doesn't. I don't realy want to install SQL/SQL Express on my laptop, is it possible copy the MDF file from my PC to my laptop and somehow have the app access it?

Would you advise me on what would be the best way to modify tables behind an existing vb.net 2008 desktop application:
1. Would you use refactoring? If so,what methods would you use ?
2. Would you modify an existing D/T diagram using a D/T designer? If so, do you have directions on how to use a D/T designer?

My problem does not seem to be the same as in other links. I'm trying to teach myself VB 2008 and I want to connect to an Access MDB file. I follow the instructions in all the different books and websites. I start a new project, choose a new data connection, change the type to Microsoft Access and browse for the file. When I get the connection string I press "Test Connection" and it's okay. I then drag either the entire table or just a field to the form. I use Data Preview Data and can see all the rows and columns and the data, so I know the connection has been made. however, when I press F5 I get a form, but no data and it says "0 records of 0".
I accessed the code and put a MsgBox before and after the "Fill" statement. The one before pops up, but the second one (below Fill) does not. I also get "A first chance exception of type 'System.InvalidOperationException' occurred in System.Data.dll" in the Immediate Window. I have tried putting a "Try" statement around the code and in this case it will go to the second MsgBox, but still no data.
I'm following what seems to be the most basic and simple method, but I cannot get data in my form.
I have a pdf file which I need to extract information from. the pdf has a table and I need to get the information of the last column. is this possible in vb.net?

View 3 RepliesI have a large text file that I want to use in my project, that data in the text file has about six items for each location. Now I had thought of importing the text file into a database using Access, but not had a lot of luck making it work. The question is is it better to load the data in the project as a text file then search for the string required or to convert it into a database. (The text file is a list of airports and related data.) Can a text file be converted to a Microsoft compact SQL database?

Every line ends in a CrLf - So I know I can use StreamReader and ReadLine(). I did get it to work on one of the test files they sent.(A very Short file) However, the file is not delimited at all and every field is padded to the full length they specified. Here's the format of the file:

View 2 RepliesI am trying to move from the old ADO to the new ADO .NET . However , no matter how many tutorials I read over the internet , I still can't find a way to do something which , as I believe , has to be very simple I tried to mimic the way the graphic control did but I am missing some things ... I noticed that , in the graphic way , the wizard created 4 controls :- a DataGridView control- a DataSet control- a BindingSource control- a TableAdapter controlI recreated all of them and filled their correspondent properties , but yet I can't make it work . I think what I am missing is the connection itself . I looked on the internet and I think a connection can be made and opened like this :
Dim DataBaseConnectionMY As New OleDb.OleDbConnection
DataBaseConnectionMY.ConnectionString = "PROVIDER=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source = C:ProsoData.mdb"

I am writing a very simple program that connects to a accdb file (Microsoft Access 2007 file) and returns some results in a datagridview. Everything is fine. Now because we have to deploy this program in many computers i publish it so everyone we want can install it and have updates. What i wanted to do is to make the database file part of the program which i did it by adding it to the resources. My problem is that i do not know what connection string to enter in order to access it in my resources.
My previous connectionstring before i deploy it was this
ConnectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source=C:l.accdb;Persist Security Info=True
What should i change in the data source in order to access the same file in my resources?
I wonder if it is possible to find a specific row and specific columns in data base file (Access) . You see , I am using a DataGridView control to show only SOME of the columns (fields) of a table from an Access file . For example , lets say that in the DataGridView control I only show the following fields :Field1 , Field2 and Field3 .Now , when the user selects an entry in the DataGridView control , I want to insert the text from Field4 into a text box on the form .
The problem , however , is that I don't know how to get the specific row in the data base file and also I don't know how to get the text in column (field) Field4 of that row .One thing that might be important is that the index of the row in the data base file is not necessarily the same with the index of the current row in the DataGridView control . This is because in the DataGridView control the rows are order by the contents in the ID Field .ol .
I am writing a program to calculate Pi to several hundred billion decimal places and this will require lots of GB of memory. I wrote a test program in VB2008 that saved the first 16 digits of Pi (without the decimal point) to both a text file and a random access file, just to be sure it was outputting the numbers properly. For reference the first 16 digits of Pi are:

Years ago when coding with VB6 and earlier, I used a file open command to create, read, and write a file that made it easy to store useful information.I believe it was binary and you wrote/read the data to a specific line in the file. When you opened the file with something like notepad, it just showed random ascii chars. When I needed a line of data, I could specify what line to load it from.

i have a problem where i've hard coded the file path of an access database i'm using with a VB.net program. this means that if i publish the program the database doesn't publish with it and i have to "ship" the program with the the database file separately and create another form so the user can say where the file is held. i don't want to do this.is there any way to get the access database file to publish with the program and then access that file path by code? for example the database file is held in the same folder as the installed program and then is accessed by code so there is no need to use a specific file path.
