to add a windows user. The problem is i need to add the user to a group, but the groupnames are localized.E.g. the MS-example uses an english computer, which means you can get the guest group like this:
grp = AD.Children.Find("Guests", "group")
But on a non-english computer, the 'Guest' groupname is localized, meaning for example on my german language OS, the group name for Guests is "Gäste".Which means for the support example to run on my computer i need to change that line to
grp = AD.Children.Find("Gäste", "group")then it works. Now if the OS is any other language, how can I find the name for the guest user ?Or how can i get the guest user name from a sid ?

I am using System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement to try to add a local account to the local administrators group with the following code but am getting the error below on the group.Members.Add(usr) line. Both usr and group are created as objects and if I create a Test group, I can add the user to the Test group. I know the group object is the local administrators group and not the domain group because i changed the description on the local administratrors group and the group object is correct so it appears to be something specific to the local administrators group.

Background: I have an application that loads marketing companies into a drop down list if the currently logged in user is a member of that marketing group in active directory. The Group ACOMP_USER_BIG is compared to MarketingCompanyShortName Big in the database records via a web service. Problem: I have 3 Newly added AD Groups that won't load in production but load fine in the drop down on my local dev server. The deployment guy already tried doing an IISReset and that didnt fix the issue. All the AD groups have read access only and no write access. We need to find out more information on why the marketing company AD groups are not loading. How do I get the groups to load correctly or prove that the problem is not a programming issue and a deployment or AD issue? H*ere's the VB.NET Code behind that populates the marketing company drop down list.

The following steps give a Guest shutdown policy.
1- Click run, and type the gpedit.msc, to start "Local Group Policy Editor".
2 -Expand "Computer Configuration" -> "Windows Settings" -> "Security Settings" -> "Local Policies" -> Then click "User Rights Assignment".
3- In the Policy window, Select "Force shutdown from a remote system", double click it, it will pop a properties window.
4- Click "Add user or group button", add a user and name it Guest.
I need to know if it's possible to manipulate and add the user or group programmatically. I'm using Visual Basic 2008.

Here is the final code that worked for me. This uses WNetAddConnection2 to establish a connection first, before using DirectoryEntry.
Imports System.Runtime.InteropServices
Imports System.Net
Imports System.DirectoryServices
Imports System.IO

So I moved the code to an ASP.Net web app, which is impersonating a service account through the Impersonate section of web.config. The account I am impersonating does not have admin rights on any of the workstations so I put in a username/password into the constructor for the computer entry like so:
Dim deComputer As New DirectoryEntry("WinNT://" + Computername + ",computer", username, password). The username is that of a domain account which has local admin rights on every workstation. If I look at the Username property of the resulting deComputer object I can see that the username matches what I entered. Also if I enter in an invalid password it throws an error, so it is authenticating in some fashion.
However if I now try and add or remove a user from a remote workstation I get a general access denied error. If I add the service account that ASP.Net is using as a local admin on that workstation it will add and remove no problem. So next I tried using the LogonAPI (advapi32.dll ->LogonUser call) to login as the user account that is a local admin on all workstations, impersonated the resulting WindowsIdentitiy and tried running just the original deComputer instantiation. When I do this every property, excepty Path, returns an OLE exception..

Dim Principal As New System.Security.Principal.WindowsPrinipal(New ystem.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity(My.User.Name))I'm using My.User.Name in the example. I'm aware the My.User namespace has a IsInRole method, however, I well need to check a list of users and not just the current user so can't just use that or WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent. This exception is being thrown when declaring the Principal variable:"There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request"

I'm trying to match up a specific group name and see if it exists for the currently logged in user using Active Directory roles. If the Group Name exists for the Current User, I want that group name to be displayed in a drop down list. Is it possible (I'm sure it is) to validate a user's credentials against Active Directory without using Directory Services?I'm building a Browser-Based WPF application which requires users to login to and get validated via Active Directory. Since .Net 4.0 (or maybe 3.5) accessing Directory Services from an Application requires the application to be fully trusted. Since IE won't provide full trust to an application if it doesn't have the signing certificate in it's cert store, the application is refused startup permission.
If I don't use Directory Services, then I can leave the application as Partial Trust and validate my user's credentials without having to install a certificate on each user's machine.

Using WMI is it possible to associate a custom group with a builtin group of which it is a member. For example: I've created a group called "recovery admins", and added this group as a member of domain admins. When I enumerate the members of domain admins using WMI the "recovery admins" group is not identified If I use the WMI CIM studio to browse the WMI tree or run queries the "recovery admins" group does not appear to be in any way associated with the domain admins group.

I am using the following to get an array of a directory. I was recently told that I needed to process my files in date order.
Dim filelist() As String = IO.Directory.GetFileSystemEntries(CustomerDirectory, ConversionWildCard)
For Each filename As String In filelist
'do conversion here
Next
how I can get the list of files in date order?

I need to write a process which filters out 'old/dead' job files from a directory (actually two directories). This process needs to 'read' a number pattern (in a fixed position) off the filenames (for which there will almost certainly be duplicates), and having then 'got a list' of unique number patterns, give these to a function (which I already have) which will give a boolean, from which I can decide to either delete those files whose name contain this particular number pattern or not - this is intended to be run each night (windows task scheduler). Example directory content is:

I know I can get a listing using Directory.GetFiles(dirpath, "SUB_*.xml") but am stuck on how to go about the rest.

I'm trying to find an easy to create a hierarchical directory structure that I can put in a TreeView, with two caveats:
1) The file list is from a file
2) The paths are un *nix format (e.g. /dir/dir/file rather than c:dirdirfile)
I found this ([URL]) which would do what I want...if not for the two caveats above. I can go through the process of tokenizing the paths and start creating linked lists of objects for a directory structure, but before I do that I'd like to find out if anything else is available...

how would i go over an external directory listing (like an external computer that i am connected to through winsock or likewise) with a server and client..i would like to hear some suggestions on what libraries to use also (winsock, unolib,...)I need this for a school assignment so help is more than welcome. I'm planning on letting the client download files from the server through this directory listing or something likewise..it doesn't matter really if it's a directory listing or something else, it just has to be user-friendly.
