VS 02/03 Populating 2 Dimensional Array?
Dec 17, 2010I am trying to design a little application that allows user to enter daily attendances for 4 weeks.exercise 11, Murachs beginning vb.net) The form consists of a combo box that list the number of weeks, text boxes to enter daily attendances fro mon - fri, a button to save the entries, a button that calculates the average weekly attendance and a button to close the form.
The issue I am having is saving the user entries. I use a 2 dimensional array with 4 rows and 5 columns. Within the click event of the save button I user a for loop to loop through the array and populate each dimension depending on the week selected. Once they are saved I clear the text boxes, set the combo box index to the next position , I.E selecting the next week unless it is week 4 hence the limit has been reached. Finally move the focus to the monday text box.
When I run the code I keep end up with 2 errors depending on how i change the code. The first is that i exceeded the index of the array and the second is that "" cannot be cast to an integer. My code thus far is shown below. I have edited the data so much that I am now just confused.

Feb 29, 2012I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords. Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.

May 17, 2012Basically what I'm trying to do is this, I have 20 statements in a Select Case (right now they're just labels for my own testing), I have a random number generator that will generate a number between 1 and 20. Since I don't want the same statement to repeat during the individual run of the program I'm trying to generate a random number, then check it in a dupeCheck method, then if it isn't a dupe I'm trying to return it to the select case and put it in the array so that when I choose the next random number if it's the same the dupe check method will catch it and return a False boolean and then the random method will do a recursive call to itself to generate a new random number and the whole thing starts again. I'm populating the numbers into the select case just fine, but VB keeps telling me that my functions aren't returning values on all paths, and stepping through I can see that the recursion isn't happening and that it's just sending the repeat number back, but I can't figure out where my major issue is. I'll show you my current skeleton code for the "GuessOrDie" as well as the first manifestation of the code I wrote for it a couple of days ago (the old code had infinite recursive calls and array out of bound exceptions)
I would really love it if you guys could take a look and let me know what mistakes I'm making, I'm having big problems moving from FOR loops in java to For/Each loops in VB and I suspect that is a big part of my problem.

and it loads mytable like this:

Let me explain the indices, I have a form with a tab control. In mytable,x is the tab number. Each tab has up to 5 groups which is y. Each group has 17 text boxes, i.Each group also has 17 labels.I started looking at Me.controls, and looking at control properties like tabindex for some way to iterate through the textboxes and mytable to load the textboxes.
so I started with:
for x = 0 to 31
msgbox(group1.control(x).text
next x
and I saw how all my objects are not in sequence as it descending halfway through my label controls, then switched to my textboxes, and then seemingly finished randomly. I am at a total loss without the old index property and what I want to do is something like (forgive my syntax)
Form(0).Tab(x).group(y).textbox(i).text = mytable(x)(y, i)
I was thinking of manually setting the tabindex of all textboxes in group1 to sequential order to try something like:
group1.component.tabindex(i).text = mytable(x)(y, i)
To me this is fun and challenging, but also very frustrating and makes me miss coding in assembly As I can't seem to find any reference to the tree structure of accessing components indirectly, if that makes sense.

Unhandled SqlException In VB 2010 Express Thta Does Not Occur In VB 2008 Express?
Oct 16, 2010I tried to start using VB 2010 Express with a program I originally developed with VB 2005 Express that I moved to VB 2008 Express successfully a couple years ago. It uses a database file (*.mdf) that is on the computer ( not out on a server). When attempt to run the program in debug mode, I get the following error "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Documents and SettingsTomMy DocumentsQuizzing StuffQuestion Database 2010QuizQuest ionGameQuizQuestionGameinReleaseQuizQuestionDB.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."
I first made a copy of the entire project folder that was working in VB 2008 Express and gave it a different name. In VB2010 I opened the project in the copied folder and it said it successfully converted the project. I am able to open the Data Source inthe Designer and see the database structure as I expect. I think the project is still using SQL Server 2005 Express (because it is what is checked in the list of prerequisites on the Publish tab).
Note, I have programmed off and on for many years, but fairly new to using databases and SQL Server.

Jan 21, 2011I am trying to re write a VB6 program using MS Access, many years ago, using VB 2010 express and SQL server 2008 R2 Express. I have a database with several tables, which I created using the designer. I am able to connect to the database and select data and display it in textboxes etc in vb code. What I have not been able to in code is to INSERT rows DELETE rows or UPDATE any data in the tables. I can do any of these operations using the Query Designer, but I want to do it in code. I can post some code if necessiary, but I thought it might just be some property that I had not set in the designer.

VB Express 2010 Slower To Compile And Run That Older Versions Of VB Express?
May 12, 2010Is VB Express 2010 slower to compile and run that older versions of VB Express? I've installed it this weekend and it seems a little sluggish on my quad core computer with 1 gig of RAM. I have VB Express 2005 installed for my students at school and it seems to fly just fine. Those school computers are older P4s with 512k of RAM.

Jun 3, 2011Initially my app worked with excel fine, now it causes my computer to reboot only after Excel has been opened (two or more times). I have opened and closed Excel files 20+ times without running thru either of my apps (they all uses identical code for excel) and it has never caused a reboot or a crash.
run either of my apps and have the app control excel has become a crap shoot, it will reboot my computer. Adding to that I then have to do a manual shutdown because the reboot process after is unstable. (System doesn't respond properly). My code in this app is small, should make for a good example. I can provide the entire project to anyone who would volunteer to test it. (First I need to know how to send the project).
