Vb6 - Differences Between And Previous Versions Of VB?
Sep 1, 2009
I'm reasonably familiar with the various forms of VB that existed prior to .NET (VB6, VBA, VBScript...), but have yet to delve into The Sweet New Flavor that is VB.NET.

know where I can get a list of the differences between VB.Net versions? For example, in which version were generics first introduced, and when did the "Using" keyword come into being?
I've tried googling it and all I seem to get are the differences between VB6 and VB.Net, which isn't what I'm after.

I recently created a deployment project for my windows application in Visual Studio 2008, and have found that changing the "Remove Previous Versions" property to True does absolutely nothing. When clicking the installer, it will say a previous version is installed, then immediately quit.

I'm writing an Excel file recovery program with VB.Net that tries to be a convenient place to gather and access Microsoft's recommended methods. If your interested in my probably kludgy, error filled, and lacking enough cleanup code it's here: http:[url]..... The basic functionality seems to work although I haven't tested graph macro table recovery yet.
It occurred to me that Vista and Windows 7 users could benefit from being offered a list of previous versions of the file within my application if the Shadow Copy Service is on and there are previous copies. How do I do this?I looked at a lot of web pages but found no easy to crib code. One possibility I guess would be to use vssadmin via the shell but that is pretty cumbersome. I just want to display a dialogue box like the Previous Versions property sheet and allow users to pick one of the previous versions. I guess I could just display the previous version property sheet via the shell by programmatically invoking the context menu and the "Restore previous versions choice", however I also want to be able to offer the list for Vista Home Basic and Premium Users who don't have access to that tab even though apparently the previous versions still exist. Additionally if it possible I would like to offer XP users the same functionality although I'm pretty sure with XP only the System files are in the shadow copies.
I looked at MSDN on the Shadow Copy Service and went through all the pages, I also looked at AlphaVSS and AlphaFS and all the comments. I'm kind of guessing that I need to use AlphaVss and AlphFS and do the following?Find out the list of snapshots/restore points that exist on the computer.Mount those snapshots.Navigate in the mounted volumes to the Excel file the user wants to recover and make a list of those paths. With the list of paths handy, compare with some kind of diff program, the shadow copies of the files with the original.Pull out the youngest or oldest version (I don't think it matters) of those shadow copies that differ from the recovery target.List those versions of the files that are found to be different. This seems cumbersome and slow, but maybe is the fastest way to do things. I just need some confirmation that is the way to go now.

In VS2010 I'm encountering a PInvokeStackImbalance error when I call an unmanaged C function that takes a string argument. This only happens in VS2010 (works fine in earlier versions of vs). I know the MDA is more strict in VS2010 but I can't seem to figure out what the actual problem is.

If I create a DLL using VB 2010 express can it be used by previous versions of of .Net (3.5, 2.0)? Will the DLL use .Net 4.0 components, which is what I want. I don't see a way to force that to be the case.

To the board: Lately I've been getting Runtime error 3447 ("The Jet VBA file (VBAJET.dll for 16-bit versions, or VBAJET32 for 32-bit versions) failed to initialize when called. Try reinstalling the application that returned the error") when attempting to open a certain program (not one that I designed, just downloaded and installed). I installed this program in January 2009, but this error began happening only this past July. someone else to information about the files vbajet32.dll and expsrv.dll. One site said that the problem was probably caused by the file expsrv.dll being absent, but I checked my System32 folder, and it's there. As far as I can tell, it has always been there (the computer was made in 2008, and as I said the program had always worked before). Vbajet32.dll is also there. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program, but error 3447 still occurs. I also tried uninstalling the program and installing an older version, but 3447 is still there.
I tried replacing expsrv.dll, thinking it might have been corrupt, but that didn't help, and I cannot register that dll anyway. I can't figure this thing out. Both of the files are there, and I didn't change any settings or anything anywhere between last January and this July. By the way, I am on Vista.

What are the differences between 32 and 64-bit .NET (4) applications?Often 32-bit applications have problems running on 64-bit machines and conversely. I know I can declare an integer as int32 and int64 (certainly int64 on 32-bit systems make problems). Are there other differences between programming an 32 OR 64-bit or a both 32 AND 64-bit compatible application?

I unfortunately downloaded and installed Visual Studio 2010 and upgraded all my programs to .Net 4. I am really unhappy with the way 2010 runs. My computer keeps locking up for hours, programs take a long time to compile... Those are a couple of major issues.

I am developing a plugin into a third party control. They ship a SDK dll with their application to allow you to do this. However I am writing the plugin using version 1.1.0.0 of their SDK, but when trying to run the application on a clients machine that has a new version of the software the SDK version is 1.4.0.0 and my app throws the following error:
System.IO.FileLoadException: Could not load file or assembly 'MyDll.dll, Version=1.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=764d581291d764f7' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040)
When the dll is referenced into Visual Studio I have changed the Specific Version property to false, however this has not made any difference. The dll is not reference from GAC.Is there a way that I can tell my application to just use the version of dll that is on the users machine? I have checked with the 3rd party vendor and the functionality that I am using has not changed in any of the versions as they use a back-ward compatibility approach to their software.

We have legacy character codes that we want to store as numbers in a new system. To increase readibility and general understanding in the code for devs making the migration, I want to do Enums like this..
[Code]...
With this setup, the code will be readable (imagine If Record.Status = Status.Open), and yet the values will be stored in the database as small numbers so it will be efficient. However... I am a VB.NET guy, but everybody wants to code in C#, so I need this sort of structure in C#.After Googling, I discovered the the general .NET equivalent of AscW is Convert.ToInt32("C"). When I try to use that statement in an enum, I get the compiler error "Constant Expression Required".

in order for me to get help on me and my programming partners vb6 rpg, I have to upgrade the project to the vb.net platform, and I am worried that the IDE interface that is used to program the vb side of the rpg is different, so I am wanting to ask any of you if there are any significant changes to the IDE or if it is relatively the same as it was in vb6... I am also hoping that someone here can also help me to see what is wrong with my load/save function... I now thought of something to try to see if that is the issue or not, but the code is still vb6 code, the only difference will be that the program will be upgraded to the .net platform, so if that changes anything in the code, then I am not aware of this as of yet, because I am still downloading the visual studios 2010 express iso right now... so I do not know for sure yet what will be changed.

Today I was playing around with Entity Framework and I've read that the generated IL for C# was different than VB.NET for the following code:
[code]...
As it seems the VB.NET version of this code will contact the database every time the code is executed while the C# version will retrieve the entities from the cache when the code is executed multiple times. Why would they make both languages behave in such a different manner? It was my misconception that both languages just differed in syntax and had almost exactly the same generated IL.Are there any more examples where both languages generated such different IL?

I have a dataset that I export to xml (using ds.WriteXml) and then use an instance of Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Application to open and manipulate the xml data, then save it as an .XLS file.I have office 2007 (why don't they have help/about in an easy to find place... man I hate those stupid office ribbons and the person who developed them...)Anyway, this code works fine for me. But when I put this on a machine that has office 2003 installed, it crashes. So, what do I need to install, reference, buy, etc. so that I can do the same thing on machines that have 2003 (or before) installed? No, I can't install office 2003 (my first thought).

I have an application that uses a Microsoft DLL (Microsoft.ComponentStudio.ComponentPlatformImplementation.dll) which is used for OS deployment and accessing the catalog files. Version 6.0.0.0 is specific to the Windows Server 2008 catalog files. The newer version 6.1.0.0 is specific to Windows Server 2008 R2 catalog files. Attempting to access a catalog file with the incorrect version results in an exception.
My application (VB.NET using VS2005) needs to be able to access either version of these catalogs - I'd be happy with two executables (one for each catalog version) but obviously I don't want to maintain two sets of source code for each. Specifying both sets of DLLs in the project reference is not possible as the DLL names are identical. I'd rather not have to manually add and remove the DLL references each time I want to a build. As far as I know the interfaces etc are effectively identical between the two.

Any best practices on how to deal with different versions of base classes. We have made significant changes to the base class but still have lots of code inheriting from the old base class. Could you recommend how we introduce new base class. We'd like all new code to use the new base class. But, we would like the option to have old code still inherit from old base class so we have time to switch and test old classes with new base class.

The application was developed with Excel 2000 but doesn't work with 2003 or 2007. The save isn't working. Everything I have googled shows this to be a common problem. I just haven't found a solution that works. [code] We the willing, led by the unknowing, are trying to do the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much for so long with so little we are now qualified to do anything with nothing.

I work for an FDA regulated company, and they are obviously very particular about keeping track of any software changes. If I build a Windows application and then later wish to make a change to that application, does Visual Studio provide a way to save the source code for the old version of the app and the new version in separate locations?

i'm using Enumerable.Except to check if a DataTable in memory is in sync with the table in database.
The background is: this DataTable and other frequently used tables are stored in the Cache of a WebApplication. But meanwhile i'm convinced that this is not a good approach because it's a source for nasty errors that are difficult to reproduce/debug.
Therefore i've created a function that checks if database and memory are in sync, otherwise an error-log will be created. This works perfectly. If there is a row in memory that is not in database, this row will be shown below "Difference in database", the same applies in reverse. But if rows exist in both datasources(the PK idRMA) and some values differ, the log will contain this row in two versions(below "Difference in database" and "Difference in database"). It is not easy to see the differences on the first sight.
Q: Is it possible to select only the properties that caused Except to think that first sequence is not in second?
This is the the complete function(the first lines are relevant):
Public Shared Sub CheckRmaMemoryInSyncWithDB()
Dim inSyncText As String
Dim color As Drawing.Color
