I know that you can return the length of a string, which results in the number of characters and spaces. Is there a way to return a width of the string in say, pixels, inches or some unit of measurement.

Panel Based On Inches Not Pixels?

Mar 15, 2011

I have a Panel control where the dimensions of the panel are specified by the user in inches. How do I convert this to pixels so I can set the height and width properties of the control to accurately display on the monitor? From what I have found, there are 1440 twips per inch so I tried something like this:control.height = (userDefinedHeightInInches * 1440) / TwipsPerPixelYTwipsPerPixelY is 15 on my computer. The panel is not displaying at the correct size. It is too large.

VB 2010 - Unit Converter Between (km - M - Cm - Miles - Yards - Feet And Inches)

Feb 27, 2011

I am attempting to make a unit converter that converts between km, m, cm, miles, yards, feet, and inches. I have a textbox that is used to input the value to convert followed by a space and the units (i.e., 56 km) and a second textbox where the user types what unit they want to convert to (i.e., cm). When converting, the output will be displayed in the second textbox. (I know this is complicated, but this is the way it is to be done). I am doing this using sub and function procedures and If blocks and Select Case blocks (i.e., keeping it as simple as possible).

Pixel Counter - Count The Black Pixels The Grey Pixels The More Grey Pixels

Jul 27, 2009

I'm trying to make a -what i thought would be simple app.My intention was to build program that:1) i'd provide a grayscale image2) the program would count the black pixels the grey pixels the more grey pixels etc. (the hue) and the white3) would make the percentage sum of all pixels, that is: 300.000 black pixels (rgb 0 0 0) etc. given that 0 is the black, 100 the white. e.g a simple grayscale image is 55.2 white

This was my way and i don't think that is useful:

First of a button to convert the image to greyscale:

Dim bm as new Bitmap(source.Width,source.Height)

Dim x

Dim y

[CODE]...

Secondly, -and that's the stupid way- i did -or better i wanted to do- this: i put the code to dynamically create labels, each label having the colour of a pixel as background colour and as text the colour converted to rgb

The third step which i intended to do (i couldn't get pas two) was to sum up the labels etc.

I have written one application which communicate with one data logger unit (temperature monitoring unit) and download records after some interval. Unit continuously send current temperature which I have to show on screen and after each one hour I have to download log (all records saved inside unit at max 1024) from unit.

Now problem is after downloading log, application get hang or what we called working in background and resume after some time. If I pause debugger in visual studio 2008 it show control at application start (sub main) with message as "application will resume here after completing execution of current function". There is nothing in output window. So how can i trace is there any events got spool or what actually application doing in background.

Determine The Length Of A String In Pixels?

Jun 29, 2010

I am trying to determine the length of a string in pixels.

I created a little test program for myself and placed three labels on it, each with the same font in a different size. I set the width of the label to 1024, the screenwidth. I used the same test text for each label, cutting it off at the last character that shows, so there is not hidden text running off the label to be included in the string width count.

What I have found is that the width of the string is being reported as wider than the label, even though, as I just mentioned, there are no characters running off the edge of the label. So, something's awry. Does anyone know how to get an accurate width?

Here follows the whole test code. You can drop three labels on a form and run it to see what I mean.

Code:
Option Explicit On
Option Strict On
Public Class frmMain

Asp.net - Swapping A Connection String To Access A Test Database For Unit Testing?

Jun 22, 2009

I've set up a test database to begin unit-testing an app that I've recently been added to. It is a 3-tier design (presentation layer, BOL and DAL) and this is my first time writing unit tests. I've decided to start at the BOL and I figure the best way is to swap out the ConnectionString (which has been passed along as a Shared String) with one that points to my new test database. However, I don't wish to change any production code. I simply wish to somehow redirect the app to the test database during unit tests.

Unit Testing - Use Assert.AreEqual To Evaluate If String Is Greater Than A Certain Length

Feb 1, 2011

I'm wondering how to evaluate an expression using the assert object. The idea is to check if a string is longer then what is minimally acceptable. For example, Assert.AreEqual(stringName.length, >5). I know this method doesn't work but the concept is what I'm trying to get across. Is there a way to test this?

.net - TextRenderer.MeasureText Return Width=0 For Character "&"

Sep 15, 2011

I try to create my own OpenGL font system, and I need to get the size of each character I want to include in a Sprite texture. All works well and accurately, except for the character "&" (ascii 38). Even if I change the font, this character always return zero for the width. Height is good.

The strangest thing is that, if I try to measure the concatenation of "&&" (Chr(38) & Chr(38)), the result seems good ! I haven't check to see if the same code point in another range of the same font product the same error, so I don't know if the workaround "if char is "38" test the size on "38+38" will always work.

EDIT: I completely forgotten to say I'm under VB.Net (but can understand C#) and I use OpenGL with OpenTK for the binding. TextRenderer is a class of GDi+. I use this to create my font texture. This is really not an OpenGL issue.

Height Of String When Width Is Set

Aug 10, 2010

I am working on a report in Excel and there's potential for quite large amounts of text easily over-running a merged sell of maximum row height size. I therefore want to be able to merge the right amount of rows to make the text fit cleanly. My idea was to try and find the height of a string when limiting it's width - essentially placing a piece of text into some kind of container, making that container fit to size (with a set width limit, in this case 640 pixels), and measuring the height of that container. With the height of the said container, I could then work out the amount of standard sized excel rows I want to merge.I tried to use a label but there's no way to set only the vertical element to be autosize.

Format A String Into A Fixed Width Field In .Net?

Aug 1, 2011

I am trying to format a string of arbitrary length into a fixed width field for display.

Let's use a width of 20 as an example, and call the string to be formatted s. I'm adding the formatted string to a StringBuilder named b.

Dim b As New System.Text.StringBuilder()
Dim s as New String

If the string I want to display is shorter than 20 characters, I can do this:

b.Append(s.PadRight(20))

or

b.AppendFormat("{0,-20}", s)

So far, so good. But, if the string is longer than 20 characters, I want the string to be truncated to 20 characters as it is appended. The code above appends the entire string.

I tried this:

b.Append(s.Substring(0,20).PadRight(20))

But, this fires an exception if the string was shorter than 20 characters.

So, I ended up with:

b.Append(s.PadRight(20).Substring(0,20))

This seems to do the job. The PadRight prevents the exception by making sure thet string has 20 characters before the Substring is performed.

I was wondering if there is an alternate method that would look more elegant and avoid padding the string just so prevent the substring from causing an exception. Have I missed a feature of String.Format that can accomplish this in one step?

Edited to add solution:

I ended up with the following code:

Module Extensions
<Extension()> _
Function AppendFixed(ByVal b As StringBuilder, ByVal s As String, ByVal width As Integer) As StringBuilder

[Code]....

This uses an extension method to clean up the syntax, as suggested by Joel and Merlyn, and uses the StringBulider Append overloads to avoid creating new strings that will have to be garbage collected, as suggested by supercat.
