Doing some research, I have found out that you can manually change the GAC or have Windows Installer fix it for you. To be honest, I don't know where the GAC is or how to modify it. My ideal solution would be to figure out how to setup Windows Installer to fix the GAC and configure Crystal reports however to get my project to run on a basic machine. setup Windows Installer to install the appropriate Crystal Reports Engine so my project will work??

I have written a program in Visual Basic 10 and all is well. I have published it and have been burning the result to a cd and installed it on various computers, however it is the click once app, which has been fine till now. What I need to do now is to have the program install the .exe file and associated files (non click once app) to a specific drive on a computer or network computer. I have searched the net for instructions on how to initiate the windows installer and have failed. is there a program that you can select the source files then point to the installation folder tell it to go and an installation package gets made that I can burn to disk.

I have a call to the mediaPlayer in my project (to play a wav file). While publishing the project, vb.net does not include this wav file to the applications file and while intalling this wav file is missing. Hence I need to copy it manually. My company has an application that until now has been distributed as exe-file together with lots of dlls. I am about to make an installtion program for this application, but there is one big problem. The database can be both access and SQL, the user decides by what he/she writes in the connection string in the .config file. I know how to insert a custom action in the installtion program to enable to let the user chosse this during installtion, but I don't know how to include the database in the project, especially since it can be both access and SQL.

I'm using VS2005.net Windows xp Professional Edition.
I have an installation of VS2010 with Windows 7 at work and a laptop with Windows 7 X64. I transferred a whole set of project files to the laptop but the directory "Documents" does not exist on the laptop - it is called "My Documents". As such of course I get errors when loading the project on the X64 machine as the resource files cannot be found. I have tried changing the name of the directory to "Documents" to accord with the other PC, and this was apparetnly successful. But, VS still does not "see" the files in the renamed directory. How can I simply change the path name for the resource files so that VS can see these files?

View 2 Replieshow to build something like the following:I have an application that will reside on Kiosk style PCs that are out there in public settings. While the application is running on the Kiosk I'll need to restrict the access to certain PC features (reboot, command prompt, download files, etc.) so they don't mess with the PC. I need to build a Windows Installer that deploys the application and does all the set up needed to lock down the PC. The installer needs to do all the work; there can't be any manual steps besides running the installer. The installer will install the application, this part is standard. In addition it will create a local user and use Local Group Policy Objects to restrict the user's access to the machine. Then the machine administrator will log in as that local user and run the Kiosk application under this account. The hope is that the account is locked down and people playing with the application won't be able to stop the application or do anything malicious to the PC.I have been looking for a way to create GPOs in C# code. This way I can implement the GPOs as a CustomAction in my installer. So far I am not finding the right API for GPO management so I'm starting to wonder if I'm even on the right track.If you know of a nice solution for how to accomplish the Kiosk lockdown via a Windows Installer or you know something about managing Group Policy in a C# application

View 2 RepliesI've read about revising the File Version (and Assembly Version) to ensure that an updated file does replace an older/previous file when a WI update installation is carried out, but I don't understand the four-part construction of the File Version ... and my re-versioned files sometimes refuse to transfer to the target computer.
For example, a .exe I have recently updated had it's File Version set to 1.0.0.0 (it is resident now in my Program Files (x86)/MyApplication folder) and File Date 23/03/2012, but even now with the File Version set to 2.0.0.10 and a File Date of 24/03/2012 when I use WI to install the new program over the original the 1.0.0.0 file remains in place and the new 2.0.0.10 file does not get installed instead.

I've decided to go with a Windows Installer (Setup Project) in VS Prof, rather than ClickOnce,I've added this project to my main project, and have right clicked and selected 'View -> Launch Conditions', it requires the .netframework 3.5.21022...
But I've created the installer project for .NET 2.0 framework, is this going to stop someone from installing the project without .NET framework 3/3.5?EDIT: I've found under the properties of that installer project, that .NET framework 3.5 and Windows Installer 3.1 was selected as a prerequisite, unchecked those, and checked .NET Framework 2.0, however the version under the launch condition .NET Framework is still 3.5, it should be 2.0
I am working the first time now with windows installer. I made an application consisting multiple programs and one of them needs a shortcut to the user startup folder. Therefore I selected in the Installers file editor the special folder 'Users startup folder' and put there the shortcut to the program.
But when I install the programs the shortcut is placed in the common startup folder and not in the users startup folder
Second, I have a question which I have been trying to find answer for a wile but without any success.How can I monitor Windows Process for any change (create/kill) after run my app ? the only way I have think about it is that used two lists, the first one load the process list on it and the second refresh each 1 sec to get the new one and compare the two to know the difference, but its useless because you cant know who killed or created the process and other information.
As I have been read before, I guess there is a need to implement windows API, hook to detect process changes ? Is there any idea or solution for this?
Note: I am using VB.NET (2010)
