Part of my application deals with creating a number of pivot tables. I pull data from a local database, and store it in a datatable. From here, the data is processed and eventually a pivot table is returned. On small data sets it works well, but on some larger one there is a few seconds of "nothing" until the table is shown.
After a few iterations of trying things to display some form of progress I have ended up with a form with nothing but a progress bar running on it. I spawn a new thread, and run it. It works exactly like I hoped. However, when I call the thread.abort() method to terminate the thread, occasionally, the main form will minimize. I tired having me.show() aftre the .abort() to bring the form into view again, but it appears not to have helped.
Now I understand that it is better practice to have worker background threads, and the main thread for UI, but is there a simple way of ensuring that the main form does not close?
Private Sub LoadProgressForm()
Dim progressForm As New ProgressBar
progressForm.ShowDialog()

What do I want to achieve: I want to perform some time consuming operations from my MDI winforms application (C# - .NET). An MDI child form may create the thread with the operation, which may take long time (from 0.1 seconds, to even half hour) to complete. In the meantime I want the UI to respond to user actions, including manipulation of data in some other MDI child form. When the operation completes, the thread should notify the MDI child that the calculations are done,so that the MDI child can perform the post-processing.Should I use explicit threading (i.e., create explicit threads), thread pools? Or simply just propose your solution. Should I create foreground or background threads?And how does the thread communicates with the GUI, according the solution you propose?

Would anyone be able to help me here please. I'm fairly new to VB.net and threading so im just trying to figure out what is happening.When I debug this I am getting the error thread operation not valid: Control 'ProgressBar1' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.
I'm a little lost as to why the error is occuring or how to fix it. I've had to put the progress bar in a separate thread otherwise the GUI crashes

I am trying to implement a BGW and want to report progress to a progress bar for my TextFieldParser program, sometimes if your opening very large files it takes a while and I would like the user to be able to see the progress and have some interaction so they know the program is still running I am a little hung up on what to in the reportprogress
I have:
worker.ReportProgress(0, myReader.ReadFields())
and its not doing anything, I didnt expect it too since ReadFields is an array

I copied the code here and translate the code to vb [URL]it is working fine but there is one small problem but I cannot solve? Here is my code: SyncClientVB Another Source The scenario is... the progress is reported by an event (OnCopyingFile event)
Public Sub OnCopyingFile(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As CopyingFileEventArgs)
If pbFileTransfer.Value <> e.PercentCopied Then
If txtCurrentFile.Text <> e.FilePath Then
txtCurrentFile.Text = e.FilePath
[code]....
The problem is that it is ok when runned but when I click the form it starts to hang but in the console... it is still continuing.

I have two forms, when the user selects a button, the second form opens and an external executable begins an automated process. The point of the second form, is to only show the current progress of the automated tasks and closes when those tasks are completed.How would I use a progress bar to show the current progress of an action on a different form without knowing how long it will take?

frmMain - Allows user to pick process or combination of processes they want to run frmProcess - Shows progress of their selection I have three modules. Each runs a specific process. The frmMain allows the user to run any one of the three modules individually or all together in a single process (basically, runs the one after the other until done).

I have a filesystemwatcher which place files in a queue when they are created. From the queue the files are further processed (xml into SQL database).
The mechanism works fine, but I want to add a progress bar to follow the progress of the files in the queue: processing 1 of 10......2 of 10......3 of 10 etc.For testing, I created a batch file to simulate the creation of files, so the filesystemwatcher can to his work and place the files in the queue. When I tell the batchfile to simulate the creation of 20 files, I see that the amount of files in the queue change. For example;

In the app I'm currently making, I have two progress bars. One for current task being committed and the other is for overall progress.During runtime, I calculate how many tasks are being run and set that as the maximum. As each task completes, the progress bar is incremented by one.
I want the current task progress bar to show the progress of the current task. Some tasks can take a few minutes to complete so that progress bar works great. But, if the task is super quick, like editing registry keys, I see no progress at all.When I edit the registry, it basically goes like this:
'Edit Key
'x
'x
'x
ProgressBar1.PerformStep()[code].....
It completes so quickly that I never see the bar even move.I also have each task report its name into a label and it skips ahead so quickly that I only see the first task name and the last.Is there any way to make this do a better job at reporting the progress?

I came across a problem in my program it takes too long to calculate the values needed (about 10 sec) .But thats not the problem you don't know when the program is working or not, as it just locks up until its finshed and I view that as a problem.
I need to be able to show the progress of this .I looked at using background Workers but I get exception "Object reference not set to an instance" I believe this is because the background worker cannot write values or something ,As it works will a normal handler.

Is it possible to set a project default for VB.NET winforms projects so that the default Modifier for controls added to winforms is Private (not Friend)?I know there's a "modifiers" property in the properties window so I can set it for each individual control however I would like to change the project so from now on myself and other developers have to specifically decide to change from friend to private. (Which I would strongly discourage them from doing).I believe there is no way of doing this, but on another forum a while ago someone mentioned it would be possible with an add-in (but didn't name the add-in or where to get it).

I need to be able to call a C++ dll that takes a long time (possibly infinte, it relies on user input)to execute. Im calling this through VB. My VB GUI freezes up when this happens, and I would like to keep the GUI responsive, so that the user can stop this possibly infinte loop. A bit of background, the C++ is trying to keep score on a snooker table using a webcam, and while the VB scoreboard updates easily, I would like to script it so that the analysis is almost continuous, while still allowing the user to interact. Currently the project requires the user to press a button to start the shot analysis, but it would be preferable if the program scripted itself. I have only realised this problem now and the deadline is very soon.
Update: Our lecturer suggested an option to solve the problem, but it would appear that most options here and the one he suggested will not work for us as the processing time required for the webcam image capture is too great to handle due to hardware constraints.

I have the following code. My program loads 20 pictures in one panel and each pictures has for the moment like 500 Kb, but in the future they shall have like 2~6 Mb.When I use this part of code, my program that uses only 6 Mb of memory, but jumpes at 202 Mb when pics are loaded. I need a method to resize or make them thumbnail or something to reduce the memory.I don't know for the moment how to use the System.Threading, but I want to know if it shall help my program, if not, then help me replace parts of my code.Private Sub PanelPictures(ByVal picsoriz As Integer) ' picoriz represents how many pictures should the panel have on each row (it's set at 5 pictures per line/row) [code]

how the threading within vb actually works. am i of the understanding that every time you create an event, through a button control for instance, that this infact creates a seperate process which will run independantly to another. say for instance you had two buttons on a form and each contained code which took 5 seconds to execute. if i were to click one button into action and then the other with a second, would the two processes run alongside one another or would i have to wait for the first code to execute before the second button could be executed?

I am communicating with a USB-HID device. It will successfully complete hundreds of send-receive requests but occasionally get a Null Exception error.
[Code]...
at the rxData.dataPacket(i) = element I will get a NullReference error every now and then. I could enclose it in a try/catch statement, but I'd like to fix the root problem if possible.This device is communicating to microcontrollers, and it is possible that they won't always give a value... but my feeling is this is some sort of UI threading issue. When debugging, even though there is a null exception, many times there actually does seem to be data in dataReceived.data.ToList(). Is there an easy way to place the whole data processing routine on a thread separate from the UI?Edit: Changed code to match answer and give more info on where it is used. Still get NullReferenceExceptions after about 1,000 completed send/receive requests to the HID device.
