Writing A GUI Frontend For Varius Console Programs - Redirecting Outputstream
Jun 17, 2009
I am writing a GUI frontend for varius console programs and i am in need of assistance... the CHKDSK.exe program is causing trouble.I am using this code:
Private Sub Button4_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button4.Click
Dim argstr as string = "F: /V"
Dim p As Process[code].....
This code works for ALL other programs i have tried except chkdsk... i also tried using this loop for reading:
While
p.StandardOutput.EndOfStream = False

I am working with a console application for VB 10.
How can I replace data that I have already written with:
Console.Write
Or how can I write on a specific point: e.g. 100 lines, 100 chars left
In the same way that a program such as wget has a loading bar that does not keep getting replaced every time progress is increased.

I'm writing to console and it seems to work well. I'm using this
AttachConsole(-1)
Console.Out.WriteLine("Hellow world")
FreeConsole()
The question is:
If I run the app's exe file from command line, and try to redirect the output into a file. It doesn't work.For example:C: > myapp.exe > c:output.txt I still get the output to console screen, but I want to to be saved into output.txt What's going wrong ? How to do that?

I have Visual Basic 2010, can you tell me how I could simplify this code without using the last IF statement? In other words, have console.beep when form2 comes up, but with out adding the extra line?What would an easier way to write this be? I mean instead of writing the separate if statement for the console.beep?
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
If TextBox1.Text = "valentines" And TextBox2.Text = "day" Then Form2.Show() Else MsgBox("That's Not It Theresa!")
If Form2.Focus = True Then Console.Beep()
End Sub

I am using Visual Basic to dynamically create a Visio diagram. It is called from a web application. The web app makes the call to the .aspx file, which does its work and then writes the file to the web app through Response.BinaryWrite. The problem is this: there could be multiple users on the web app, and the VB app is currently confusing the web app with simultaneous use. That is, if two users both make a call to the VB app, the VB app doesn't separate the output, so one user gets a binary file (unreadable by Visio) with both users' contents, and the other user gets a blank Visio file. Can I use anything in the Response.AddHeader to distinguish the output so the Java code for the app can pick the correct output?

I'm working on a project where there will be a MySQL database containing data that will mostly be displayed on the web using PHP. However, there is a need here for a back-office data entry application (linked to the same MySQL database) that is feature rich and easy to use.what I'm trying to understand is where we are at with web-based frontends. I find that there are still so many events and features that I can make use of in a Windows Desktop GUI written in something like C#, VB.Net or MS Access. I don't have a lot of experience programming UI for web but it's my impression that it's still more difficult and takes longer to get similar or the same functionality using non-MS web technologies (I dislike ASP.net, sorry) as compared to programming the desktop portion in a traditional desktop application language like C#, VB.Net, or MS Access.
jQuery and jQuery UI are definately making things easier. Also, there's very rich online applications like Google Docs and Zoho but it's my impression that these are programmed by some of the top web UI programmers around, not to mention that it takes longer to write it and intensive testing to make it work in all of your target browsers. It also takes extra time and code to "block" browsers that don't meet the requirements.I know I may not have given enough information here but I'm not sure what I'm missing. If you have questions just leave a comment below so I can edit this post and answer the questions.

I would like to create a windows forms frontend application to some command line utilities.
1. How can I launch a command line program with arguments from a vb application?
2. How can I pipe information that is returned by that program back into a textbox? Such as status information.

I have some really nice Python code to do what I need to do.I don't particularly like any of the Python GUI choices though. wxPython is nice, but for what I need, the speed on resizing,refreshing and dynamically adding controls just isn't there. I would like to create the GUI in VB.NET.I imagine I could use IronPython to link the two,but that creates a dependency on a rather large third-party product. I was perusing the MSDN documentation on Windows IPC and got the idea to use sockets. I copied the Python echo server code from the Python documentation and in under 5 minutes was able to create a client in VB.NET without even reading the System.Net.Sockets documentation, so this certainly doesn't seem too hard.

The small company I work for just started using this command-line software and it's rather confusing and tedious. I was wondering if it would be feasible to make a GUI frontend and how I would start going about it.If possible, I would like to have it get data to fill in dropdown boxes and such, but at the very least I'd like to be able to hit a button and perform whatever task.

I am sure this can be done, as Visual Studio is basically built this way. What I want to do is simply make a class that my other workmates can use. But rather than have it in a code form, I want to build it (partially), and then my workmate can add it into their programs (sort of, like the add reference for the .NET stuff).

It be great if you guys can share some source codes and other stuff in this field. also other day i was in dream spark and i am able to get copy of VS.net 2010 ultimate edition, are there a lot of major changes, cause i got 2 thick book for VB.net 2005..

When you've finished a program and you're trying to distribute it to the mass public. How is the best way to go about doing this? What sites would you post your program on and getting the word out that there is a new program on the block and it does xyz. This is directed to freeware so there wouldn't be any advertising.
Sorry for not explaining it very well the first time.

Ok, so I've got this code and what it does is it redirects the standard output from the console (Process) and puts it into the textbox (consoleOutput). It seems to work really well but the only thing wrong with it is that it redirects, or enters, the same entry into the textbox 2, 3 or sometimes 4 times! I have looked through my code several times and can not seem to find out what is causing this. Lower down you can see my code so far for the program, and a screenshot of the program while it is redirecting.

Currently I have a button which on client click, runs a jquerry function that changes the text on a (hidden to the user) label, and then clicks a second (also hidden to the user) button. This second button then runs an ASP.NET function whose last command is to redirect to a second page. The reason I needed to do this, is because I store the value of the label (which is dynamically assigned according to a database) into a session variable BEFORE redirecting to the second page.
This method works perfectly on Chrome and Firefox. Nevertheless, it doesn't seem to be redirecting in IE. It does, however, store the session variable (i.e. the sub routine that handles the hidden button's click event IS called).
Edit: I've tried clicking the hidden button myself, and it works fine, so it is definitely something with the postback from the first button interfering with the subroutine called from the second one.

I am writing an application in VB .NET which calls external executables (written in C++)and passes them some command line arguments. What I need to do is read back their stdout outputs inealtime , i.e. as they run.I am currently using the ProcessStartInfo class and setting the RedirectStandardOutput property to true and reading it back in from a StreamReader. However, I cannot read this back in realtime. Once the process finishes, the StreamReader will allow me to

I am having trouble redirecting standardoutput and standarderror from a command line program that dumps a lot of numbers to the screen. I've looked through a lot of similar posts and think my code matches what it should be doing (asynchronous reading of the data with appropriate invokes for writing to the log text box) but it still just hangs the application until my p.WaitForExit times out. Once it times out and I kill the process, a chunk (but not all) of the data is written to the textbox in from the OutputDataReceived event handler. Any ideas what is going on here? I've seen some posts regarding buffer size, but that apparently is fixed (i.e. I can set a buffer size of 1 and receive every char). Below is my function to execute the process and two relevant event handlers.
Private Function ExecuteWallGen() As Boolean
Dim bResult As Boolean = False
Dim szExec = Me.ExecutablePath & Me.WallGenExecutable

In my application I have a gridview in which details of containers are stored and displyed.There are many containers in this gridview, say more than 150 containers. I have implemented paging for this gridview as it contains many record. But its difficult for the user to go to every page and search one particular container. So i want a serach option for this.What I need is to enter a containernumber in a textbox and when I click a button, it should redirect to that particular page in the gridview where that particular containernumber exists.

Dim myProcess As New Process()
Try
Dim s As String
myProcess.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = False
myProcess.StartInfo.FileName = "flac.exe"
[Code] .....
The AppendText runs and works on an initial run of the exe, but the problem is that not all output is redirected. when using parameters I get no output from the stream, but running flac.exe at the command prompt reveals output of course. Does anyone know anything about redirects and how to make the above code redirect ALL output from the exe?
flac.exe is a lossless audio codec utility. I am making a frontend for it.
