Jan 17, 2012
I begain in 1971 learning TRS-80 Model III Basic language...later taught myself Lotus 1-2-3 and then DBase. Later, graduated to Visual Basic Stopped at VB 6.0. Now I need to move up to VB 2010...I have been programming for our company for sometime and use VB 6.0 as a front end for numerous Access DB applications. Can you recommend a good book (or books) out there that can help me with using VB 2010 as a frontend for Access?..just need the basics to be able to make connections, query the tables, return the data, update data, etc.

I'm creating a rather large and complex application and was wondering if any of you had any recommendations for good books on application and project architecture. Multi-user - database - heavy interaction with windows api for shell extensions. Not the standard maintenance or reporting app I usually write!

I am starting off in the .NET world and wanted to know what a great beginner book would be that would explain how to use asp.net, vb and SQL.
I hear "Learning Visual Basic" is a good series but wanted to see if there were anymore out there.

I probably confused memory usage issues with the UI sharing same thread as the processing (as pointed out by MusiGenesis below). However regarding the Memory usage. I am still not able to find VB.net specific syntax, although people have pointed out some great .Net and C# information below (and if I were more versed in those technologies, one could adapt to make work with VB.net).The general concepts are working fine, however I am having issues where the Mem Usage on Task Manager keeps growing as the program is used to load more and more files. On Startup, before doing anything, the VB application has 27,000 K.Once the file is parsed and even after I dispose of the File handle as well as the the data increases a lot. I strip out everything in the code and it still seems that memory in Mem Usage remains captured. There is no rhyme or reason as to why the Mem Usage is growing (i.e. sometimes it can grow by 20 mb when reading a 7mb file, however other times it does not increase at all, when reading a 3mb file). Sometimes, it appers to release some memory when the parsing is complete and other times it just holds.I have looked at .Net Memory Profiler and have not really been able to make heads or tails from that.I have read a lot on internet regarding Memory Management on .Net in General about Dispose and "Nothing" and DataSets, etc, however have not really found anything regarding VB.Net specifically. My General Question is: Are there any good tutorials/books/blogs/etc that show a more in depth tutorial on managing memory in a VB.Net application (i.e. how/when to dispose/close, etc), or does anyone have some specific tips from there experience.

In my applications I use objects and classes, but when reading SO topics, I have the idea I don't use real OOP principles. For example, I never use inheritance or interfaces. Therefore, I am trying to learn proper OOP (in VB.NET), but I find some concepts quite hard to understand (even after reading a lot about the subjects on SO).So I'm trying to find a book or resource with good practical real-world examples. For instance, I kind of understand examples like using an interface for both Dog and Cat classes when using a EatFood method, but I find it hard to relate it to real-world cases.Ideally these books or resources should cover explanations about:
- when and why to use inheritance or interfaces or abstract classes
- when and why to use private, public, protected, virtual etc.
- best practices in dependency injection /inversion of control
- when to use aspect oriented programming
- using of constructors
- solid principles
- singletons
- encapsulation
Perhaps it's a mix of all kinds of concepts, but I think these are all related to OOP, please correct me if I'm wrong.I would prefer a book/resource with VB.NET examples, but this might be difficult?

I am a EE graduate from about a year and a half ago working in the semiconductor industry as a hardware/test engineer. I wan't to learn VB to do lab level data test and acquisition. I am learning this in my free time at work and home, and I would be using VB to talk with different electronic equipment through GBIP to source, measure, and record data. Anyone have any good ideas of a good book for such applications?? I know there are a ton of books and courses out there, but 99.9% of that information is not going to be needed for my industry application. I also took a few C classes in college, and I have some experience with labview so I am not a total noob to programming. So if anyone has a good book, or refferences that would be really appreciated. Also what version of VB would you recomend me learning?

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a good book or web site for Word and Excel Programming for VB. I'm not talking about VBA, I need to "work" with them from within my program not from within word or excel. I need to upgrade programs that were looking at Office 2000 and we're going to 07 or 10 not sure yet but figured I could at least get a bit of a jump on things.

I'm familiar with VB and I'm familiar with Access. What I don't know is how to get started creating forms in VB that's accessible through Access. Are there any books out there that will help me get started?

Visual Studio has a utility to make installers for my programs. People will be able to install and run my applications on their own PC's. It is, however, rather limited. For a start, people can't choose where to install. The installer chooses for them. I can't even find where it puts the application.
I've heard there are many 3rd party installer makers. Recommendations, please. What is your favourite, for VB applications? It should be fairly simple to use. I downloaded one, it has a scripting language that looks complex. It might take a while to learn it.It should also be free, or fairly cheap. At least have a free trial period.

I'm working on a project where there will be a MySQL database containing data that will mostly be displayed on the web using PHP. However, there is a need here for a back-office data entry application (linked to the same MySQL database) that is feature rich and easy to use.what I'm trying to understand is where we are at with web-based frontends. I find that there are still so many events and features that I can make use of in a Windows Desktop GUI written in something like C#, VB.Net or MS Access. I don't have a lot of experience programming UI for web but it's my impression that it's still more difficult and takes longer to get similar or the same functionality using non-MS web technologies (I dislike ASP.net, sorry) as compared to programming the desktop portion in a traditional desktop application language like C#, VB.Net, or MS Access.
jQuery and jQuery UI are definately making things easier. Also, there's very rich online applications like Google Docs and Zoho but it's my impression that these are programmed by some of the top web UI programmers around, not to mention that it takes longer to write it and intensive testing to make it work in all of your target browsers. It also takes extra time and code to "block" browsers that don't meet the requirements.I know I may not have given enough information here but I'm not sure what I'm missing. If you have questions just leave a comment below so I can edit this post and answer the questions.

2. How can I pipe information that is returned by that program back into a textbox? Such as status information.

I have some really nice Python code to do what I need to do.I don't particularly like any of the Python GUI choices though. wxPython is nice, but for what I need, the speed on resizing, refreshing and dynamically adding controls just isn't there. I would like to create the GUI in VB.NET.I imagine I could use IronPython to link the two,but that creates a dependency on a rather large third-party product. I was perusing the MSDN documentation on Windows IPC and got the idea to use sockets. I copied the Python echo server code from the Python documentation and in under 5 minutes was able to create a client in VB.NET without even reading the System.Net.Sockets documentation, so this certainly doesn't seem too hard.

The small company I work for just started using this command-line software and it's rather confusing and tedious. I was wondering if it would be feasible to make a GUI frontend and how I would start going about it.If possible, I would like to have it get data to fill in dropdown boxes and such, but at the very least I'd like to be able to hit a button and perform whatever task.

Are there any books written with the focus on how to control MS Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint) through VB.net applications? I only have checked the book Professional Excel Development that shows a little bit on automating Excel from VB.net. I would need a much more comprehensive book (or links to web learning pages) on the issue.
