Any Good Tutorials / Books / Blogs That Show A More In Depth Tutorial On Managing Memory
Sep 13, 2009
I probably confused memory usage issues with the UI sharing same thread as the processing (as pointed out by MusiGenesis below). However regarding the Memory usage. I am still not able to find VB.net specific syntax, although people have pointed out some great .Net and C# information below (and if I were more versed in those technologies, one could adapt to make work with VB.net).The general concepts are working fine, however I am having issues where the Mem Usage on Task Manager keeps growing as the program is used to load more and more files. On Startup, before doing anything, the VB application has 27,000 K.Once the file is parsed and even after I dispose of the File handle as well as the the data increases a lot. I strip out everything in the code and it still seems that memory in Mem Usage remains captured. There is no rhyme or reason as to why the Mem Usage is growing (i.e. sometimes it can grow by 20 mb when reading a 7mb file, however other times it does not increase at all, when reading a 3mb file). Sometimes, it appers to release some memory when the parsing is complete and other times it just holds.I have looked at .Net Memory Profiler and have not really been able to make heads or tails from that.I have read a lot on internet regarding Memory Management on .Net in General about Dispose and "Nothing" and DataSets, etc, however have not really found anything regarding VB.Net specifically. My General Question is: Are there any good tutorials/books/blogs/etc that show a more in depth tutorial on managing memory in a VB.Net application (i.e. how/when to dispose/close, etc), or does anyone have some specific tips from there experience.
I have experience in C++ programming, but never created gui with it so learning vb.net for some quick gui development. and i want to learn vb.net. I can't install visual basic express on computer cause i'm on shared computer and such huge install is not possible on that computer. So i picked up sharpdevelop. After searching most of the tutorial, i found out that most of tutorial written for visual studio IDE for vb and vb.net. I'm trying to learn vb.net in depth from command line to gui programs. Any good recommendation of tutorials, book ? I searched google but very few results so far. Does anyone have any good .NET Tutorials? What are some good websites for .NET Tutorials? Sorry if this is in the wrong section. I don't know enough about .NET to ask in the right section.
I never touched the crystal reports topic before but i hae been through certain articles and found that i't not hard as it sounds. however, i need names of some good books on this topic..
I'm creating a rather large and complex application and was wondering if any of you had any recommendations for good books on application and project architecture. Multi-user - database - heavy interaction with windows api for shell extensions. Not the standard maintenance or reporting app I usually write!
I'm a Coldfusion Web Developer and I'm finding that in my local area, work for CF Devs has become extremely scarce. There were a handful of companies that were Coldfusion houses a few years ago and it appears most of them have moved away from CF development.I'm looking to expand my skillset to improve my employment outlook, and it appears that many of the web development positions that are available to me now are focused around .NET web development. The last time i took a look at .NET as a web development platform was way back during 2.0; where I found it to be poorly organized and extremely unfocused. Apparently somewhere along the line I missed the boat because that's where about 90% of the web development jobs in my area are now. I've done some searching on google to see if I can find a tutorial, something that's akin to hand-holding, and have come back dissapointed. So I'm turning to the SO community to ask for links and resources that might help better explain how .NET development works in a web development capacity, and for links to these resources so I can begin boning up my knowledge and start writing practice applications.
I begain in 1971 learning TRS-80 Model III Basic language...later taught myself Lotus 1-2-3 and then DBase. Later, graduated to Visual Basic Stopped at VB 6.0. Now I need to move up to VB 2010...I have been programming for our company for sometime and use VB 6.0 as a front end for numerous Access DB applications. Can you recommend a good book (or books) out there that can help me with using VB 2010 as a frontend for Access?..just need the basics to be able to make connections, query the tables, return the data, update data, etc.
I'm looking to get into some of the more advanced features of resharper tamplates. I know just enough to be dangerous by looking at some of the existing templates.
I have been looking for a good beginner tutorial on polymorphism, inhertance, and related terms.Something where I can start at and go through and get most of the common programming terms and techniques explained with examples
Can anyone point me to a good tutorial for creating custom controls. I want something that is actually understandable.I have gone through a few but nothing really any good at this point. I want to create my own contol that uses its own look and not just modifying a windows control.
Any links to good descriptions and/or tutorials (with VB.net 2008) on OdbcDataReader? I tried, but didn't find many. MSDN is not such a good help in this case.
What's your list of blogs for anything asp.net and vb.net related. I know for instance Scott Gu's stuff is the first on the rank for asp.net.I'm trying to compile a list of 'good' stuff that will teach me things as I read, the more I gather the better, this way I'll get several posts a day, as most blogs post only once a week if that.jsut to list some of my favs, scottgu & phill haack... although he talks too much about his baby!
I am trying to install the My.Blogs sample. I am running VS2005 Pro on WindowsXP Pro SP2. The template installation fails with the error message:
Installation stopped because the directory for the ProjectType value did not exist. The project type is invalid for your installation of Visual Studio.
Is My.Blogs a beta2 only thing? I am running release VS2005. Are there manual instructions for installing this via file copy?
Also: the error message suffers from poor design. Of more use would be something along the lines of "The project type 'inserttype' is invalid for your installation of Visual Studio, which I detect is: 'insert detected VS version'.
You can easily get the memory usage of the current process using workingset64 However I could not find any event like OnMemUsageChanged so I can display a little mem usage meter that displays live/real time the mem usage value. Updating in a timer every second can be done but looks inefficient. Is there anyway I can get an event or callback every time the mem usage changes ?
I'd like to know if there are other ways to write a submission program (submitting urls or pad xml to directories, submission sites, blogs) other than using the webBrowser. I've evaluated some shareware programs that submit urls or data very quickly, like 100s in a matter of mins. I couldn't write a program using a webBrowser because it might take 15 secs just to load the url. How are they writing the code??
Does anyone have or has anyone come across an in depth guide to the .net app.config? I'm having significant issues trying to find a definitive guide to this area of .net.I can already handle custom configuration sections, from basic key/value pair settings right through to complete custom configuration handlers which I struggled to find information on, but I cannot find any documentation regarding basic native .NET functionality of the configuration file...for instance, with regards to BCL configuration. I've gone through the machine.config.comments and the config.xsd files and it has provided a little insight but not enough to fully grasp the full potential of the config file. I've also trawled through everything I can find on Safari and only managed to come up with a couple of useful tidbits that I wasn't previously aware of but it seems this area of .NET is extremely poorly documented and unless you have a very specific purpose in mind, it's useless trying to find information on it.
Lets say a search engine is doing a search by date range. If we want to further expand the search by decreasing the date range by looping with date range one month close to end date how would you change the parameters?
For example if these are the date parameters:
start date = 05 / 07/ 2009 end date = 05 / 07/ 2010 050709 - 050710
Thats my set range; so now I want to change the range by month like this
How would you create depth code for two classes in visual basic 2008 (like if you wanted to put one picturebox behind another picturebox depending on what each picturebox's depth equals)?[code]I can't get my movement code and the image for the character object to work.
I am stuck on a problem with combining lines with solid geometry. Look at the pictures. The first is a look at the object from above and the second is the same object seen from below. The gridlines in the second picture should be in front of the object. The lines are drawn using linelist (one line, vertexformat=positioncolored, it is then translated and rotated in a loop) and the cube is drawn using trianglestrip (vertexformat=positionnormalcolored). It seems like lines are not depth tested. How do I manage to properly draw both grid and cube?
I created a listbox that displays files from a certain directory, and want to know how to actually get information on that file, rather than just the name its self that is displayed in the listbox.
This is what I have:
Dim files() As String = IO.Directory.GetFiles("C:Users" & (System.Environment.UserName) & "Desktop", "*.txt", IO.SearchOption.AllDirectories) Label9.Text = ListBox1.SelectedItem
