Error:'System.Data.Odbc.OdbcConnection' cannot be converted to 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection'.
Here my connection string:

View 2 RepliesI probably confused memory usage issues with the UI sharing same thread as the processing (as pointed out by MusiGenesis below). However regarding the Memory usage. I am still not able to find VB.net specific syntax, although people have pointed out some great .Net and C# information below (and if I were more versed in those technologies, one could adapt to make work with VB.net).The general concepts are working fine, however I am having issues where the Mem Usage on Task Manager keeps growing as the program is used to load more and more files.On Startup, before doing anything, the VB application has 27,000 K.Once the file is parsed and even after I dispose of the File handle as well as the the data increases a lot. I strip out everything in the code and it still seems that memory in Mem Usage remains captured. There is no rhyme or reason as to why the Mem Usage is growing (i.e. sometimes it can grow by 20 mb when reading a 7mb file, however other times it does not increase at all, when reading a 3mb file). Sometimes, it appers to release some memory when the parsing is complete and other times it just holds.I have looked at .Net Memory Profiler and have not really been able to make heads or tails from that.I have read a lot on internet regarding Memory Management on .Net in General about Dispose and "Nothing" and DataSets, etc, however have not really found anything regarding VB.Net specifically.My General Question is: Are there any good tutorials/books/blogs/etc that show a more in depth tutorial on managing memory in a VB.Net application (i.e. how/when to dispose/close, etc), or does anyone have some specific tips from there experience.

The problem is since I am using a like statement, I need to be able to have % on either side of the search word, and I can't seem to do that with '%:searchterm%', it just gives an error of ORA-01036: illegal variable name/number.Can I parameterize but still have my flexible like statement be a part of it?
I'm writing an application that imports and tidy up address data into a cleaned, deduped excel workbook ordered in rows with each column as an address field. One of the issues I've ran into is that we sometimes get a workbook where the multiple address fields are held in a single cell with line breaks. I've written code to extract all of this data out of the excel sheet in to a dataset with each sheet as a table and the address fields contained within. I now want to create a new Excel workbook from this data with the address fields in Row and columns the problem I have is I can Open/create the Workbook but when I try to insert a new Sheet (Table) I get an error saying the Workbook is read only....

I have experience in C++ programming, but never created gui with it so learning vb.net for some quick gui development. and i want to learn vb.net. I can't install visual basic express on computer cause i'm on shared computer and such huge install is not possible on that computer. So i picked up sharpdevelop. After searching most of the tutorial, i found out that most of tutorial written for visual studio IDE for vb and vb.net. I'm trying to learn vb.net in depth from command line to gui programs. Any good recommendation of tutorials, book ? I searched google but very few results so far. But still I have a problem reading the "Message" / "description" of the event log.I am getting a System.NullReferenceException while reading the "Message" / "Description" of the event log.Also when I use System.Diagnostics.EventLog and read all the Event on by one I am able to read the message/description of the event. The report uses an ODBC connection provided by 32-bit software accounts package, which is installed in the ODBC 32-bit This all works fine on 32-bit XP and 32-bit Win7 with no problems, When run on a win7 64-bit machine the application launches ok, but when it comes to running the report, it prompts for a database logon box for the odbc connection.
When the report is run seperate on its own, on the exact same pc through crystal reports desginer it runs fine, Its almost like the application is not picking the 32-bit ODBC set up is it the case that the connection needs to be coded rather than using the report connection,

i click check in i want to save the information type in the text box from the form to my datebase in different tables but it has an error when i click check in it says: "data type mismatch in criteria description codes in vb 2008".
Coming form too many years of VB6 I have a natural inclination to write my own data access code, etc. rather than using database wizard, etc. Same goes for using simple databinding to recordset rather than managing object collections and tying those to controls
I am finally moving to VB.NET and find myself on a solo project without any team on which to lean, so I have a couple related questions as I try to get my head around the transition. The project is basically a line of business app with a SQL Server back end.
1. Are the data designers/wizards so good now that rolling your own is no longer worth while?
2. Is the data-binding now fast, flexible, and reliable?
3. Can you recommend a good book or robust on-line tutorial that covers this sort of programming? 2008 or 2010 preferred.

View 5 RepliesI have an old VB6 program which copies data from a legacy system (Btrieve 6) into our SQL Server so it can be served up on the web and used to feed some of our other needs. The legacy system outputs a file and a feed program posts it into the legacy ODBC database. The program isn't anywhere near realtime and I am now finding the delay between data going into the legacy database and then into the SQL database is becoming unacceptable so I thought I'd look at VB.NET and see if I could find a better way of doing it using FileSystemWatcher so that when the legacy output file is renamed I can then start a copy of the record affected from the legacy to the new database.

I've downloaded the ODBC driver and the MySQL driver and installed them on my system (Win XP SP3). However, the only data sources that are showing up when I try to add a data connection are Access & 2 SQL Server objects. Is there something else that needs to be setup in order for Visual Studio to allow additional data sources? I'm currently running VS 2010 Express.

In VB using an ODBC connection I can do this: select a, b, c, d from a file where (criteria here)but when I try to do this Select a, b, c, sum(d) from a file where (criteria here) group by a, b, c I am getting an error: -2147467259 (80004005).

Is it possible to have a Textbox on a form that when the user inputs data, ( during Runtime )that data remains in the Textbox for good and the Textbox then becomes read only ? Is it also possible to make it so that the CD with the programme on, is in the PC when the programme is being used. Perhaps writing the Textbox data back onto the CD ?

the error is generated at the open method note* this same code works fine in another computer, the main difference is that this one has a 64 bit OS.
I'm using the Microsoft Excel Driver to import an Excel document into a adodb.recordset so that I can remove duplicate rows and put it into the SQL Server database.
The first column has values like 192, 13U, JJJ, etc. but for some reason the query casts it as a double value, and any rows with alpha values get converted to Null. From what I can tell this is because the Majority type is numeric instead of text.
I tried casting it, but got an error.
