Data Designers/wizards So Good Now That Rolling Own Is No Longer Worth While?
Apr 9, 2010
Coming form too many years of VB6 I have a natural inclination to write my own data access code, etc. rather than using database wizard, etc. Same goes for using simple databinding to recordset rather than managing object collections and tying those to controls
I am finally moving to VB.NET and find myself on a solo project without any team on which to lean, so I have a couple related questions as I try to get my head around the transition. The project is basically a line of business app with a SQL Server back end.
1. Are the data designers/wizards so good now that rolling your own is no longer worth while?
2. Is the data-binding now fast, flexible, and reliable?
3. Can you recommend a good book or robust on-line tutorial that covers this sort of programming? 2008 or 2010 preferred.
I agree that the best way to shorten the ViewState is to disable it on the ASP.Net controls that don't need it. Keeping it small from the beginning is a great habit.I have also heard that it is already compressed (although can be true... there are ways of compressing it even more, has described in this Stack Overflow question).
My question here is not if it should be compressed... is: when should ViewState be compressed?If we have a ViewState of 410 characters it will weight 410 bytes in a page, while a ViewState of 13.843 characters equals 13.5 KB.
13.5KB is a considerable weight already. And if I compress a CSS file that height 10KB, I think it is also worthy compressing a ViewState of 13.5KB, even if that means a little extra "thinking" on the server.
But is 410 bytes of ViewState worth the extra processing on the server?At what point is it worth compressing?
I have created an Excel Ribbon Addin that has some custom features that will benefit a relatively small business niche. The target companies number less than 1,000.I don't want to limit any one company's usage of the Addin...meaning I want them to be able to install and use the Addin as often as they need to, for as long as they need to, on as many computers as they need to.
The thing I want to prevent is sharing of the Addin. There are family members in this industry, that own different companies in different parts of the country...there are close friends in this industry that each own different companies. I want each company to purchase the Addin instead of share it.I have created a License Agreement that they have to agree to before the Addin is installed. But, that is as far as I have gone with it at this point.So, this leads me to 2 questions:
1. Is it worth the investment and effort to create this type of limitation for such a small market?
2. If so, what is the best way to go about accomplishing this?
I need to download serveral years worth of files from a web site, the web site posts files daily in "Date".csv. How do I write the code in vb.net to get the string value for the dates? I know that you can do something like : Dim start date = #11/01/2009# and Dim end date= Now.
How do I get these values so I can incorportate them in a string? And then loop through each value.
It will need to start with the first date an download that file, then loop through all the dates downloading each file until it has reached the end date. I already have the code written to extract the info i need from the document and import into a sql server, my only issue is the date range string issue
Is it possible to build customized Designers in Visual Studio, for example to mimic the Designer function of the stock Settings template, for classes whose instance variables change drastically from project to project?
I have been a programmer for almost 14 years and have worked in SQL, VB, VBA and MS Access. I am making the transition to VB 2008 and as you can imagine, it is frustrating. One of the new things to be in VB2008 is working with data. They have made it easy to setup datasets and output data to a form. In VB6, I never used the GUI data tools, I always custom programmed recordsets and wrote loops to output the data. Then, I wrote my own code to update, insert or delete the data. With VB 2008 I dont have to do this anymore, but is it a better practice to hand code than rely on wizards.
I also noticed I dont have as much control over the data with using the wizards, for example. There is 1 insert statement defined for a table adapter. Lets say I wanted to perform a slightly different insert based on a condition. I cant do that anymore right?
I am getting this error: The class Form1 can be designed, but is not the first class in the file. Visual studio requires that designers use the first class in the file. Move the class code so that it is the first class in the file and try loading the designer again. What I have done is in the design window I have put Imports System IO right at the top where should I move it too As when I look at the code it is endless with all the Me. info about everything???

I want to ask if its better to make datasets with wizards or programatically. Im studing with a teacher that works programatically ... but its a lot of coding. so, retrieving data is faster when you write code or is the same using wizards on datasources?? when you use datasource wizard , it open and close conections automatically?
I am constructing a search function in a class to be used by several of our asp pages. The idea is simple, take a search term from the user and query the database for the item. Currently I am doing this the wrong way, which is vulnerable to SQL injection attacks (and ELMAH is in there to save the day if something goes wrong):
[Code]...
The problem is since I am using a like statement, I need to be able to have % on either side of the search word, and I can't seem to do that with '%:searchterm%', it just gives an error of ORA-01036: illegal variable name/number.Can I parameterize but still have my flexible like statement be a part of it?
Any links to good descriptions and/or tutorials (with VB.net 2008) on OdbcDataReader? I tried, but didn't find many. MSDN is not such a good help in this case.
I've been doing research on reporting suites for a project my company is about to undertake, and have narrowed the candidates down to Active Reports and Crystal Reports. During the demo yesterday, it was clarified to me that one of the capabilities our client would like is the ability for the end-user to create custom reports integrated into the Web-Based client. I know that both packages have options for integrating an end-user designer to a WinForms based app, but I can't find a definitive straight yes or no answer for either suite as to whether or not it's possible to attach them to an ASP.Net based app.
Is it possible to have a Textbox on a form that when the user inputs data, ( during Runtime )that data remains in the Textbox for good and the Textbox then becomes read only ? Is it also possible to make it so that the CD with the programme on, is in the PC when the programme is being used. Perhaps writing the Textbox data back onto the CD ?
The Visual Studio Settings and Project Designers Package ({67909B06-91E9-4F3E-AB50-495046BE9A9A}) did not load because of previous errors. For assistance, contact the package vendor. To attempt to load this package again, type 'devenv /resetskippkgs' at the command prompt.
I have written this code implemeting MVC design pattern.... for simplcity... i have create Model with BLL having a two classes Employee and Designation and i have created the DAL using the Dataset designer tool....thus i've implemted all relationship bewteen the two tables Empoyee and Designation connected to each toher using field EmpIndex.
In MVC design pattern i should return objects to the controller (in this case i used only the view- win form) becuase of my Designer created DAL i cannot return objects of Employee and Designation to the View... this is becuase in BLL: the following method
Code: public TestMVCWithDataset.TestDataSet.tblEmployeesDataTable SearchByIndex(int iEmpIndex) { try { empAdapter.Fill(dtEmployees, iEmpIndex); return dtEmployees; } catch { throw new Exception("Employee not found!"); } }
I've decided to build wizard style library to handle many wizards and make it more simple to work with. The difficulty is that next step window changes depending on user selection on current form with a lot of controls in each of them. After long time thinking I think best would be to recreate similar to TabControl and TabPage controls and instead tabs would be a in-built command Next, Previous and Finish buttons as default in TabPage control. I've tried something to create similar but with no success yet.
I'm trying to create a game that involves rolling a dice. When I load the program and click the btnRoll button, the dice works fine and stops after a random number (between 10 and 20) of face changes. It then records the score in the a new line in a ListBox. Only problem is, when I press the roll button again, the face only changes once before recording the result.
I have tried creating a separate program that simply rolls the dice without recording the result, and it works fine. So I used roughly the same code in my game, but it still won't work. I have tried looking online for help for a few days now, so I figured this would be a good time to ask here.[code]...
I would like to have some sort of percentage on the amount of times each button has been pressede.gButton 1 is pressed 5 times, button 2 is pressed 3 times, button 3 is pressed 2 times.I would like this to create a percentage output onto the same form that is updated everytime a button is pressed on the form.
I'm trying to calculate the rolling average in a crystal report. I have got 4 weeks in a month, and I have calculated the average for each week so long. Now I want to calculate a rolling average. eg:
For week1: rolling average = (week1Average)/1 For week2: rolling average = (week1Average + week2Average)/2 For week3: rolling average = (week1Average + week2Average + week3Average)/3 etc.
The problem with the code below is that, it is not looping through,therefore the rolling average for each week is the same as its average value wich is not correct.
Dim i, weekNum as number Dim tot as double weekNum =Distinctcount({ItemRating.WeekNo})
I have one multi-row INSERT statement (300 or so sets of values) that I would like to commit to the MySQL database in an all-or-nothing fashion. insert into table VALUES
(1, 2, 3), (4, 5, 6), (7, 8, 9);
In some cases, a set of values in the command will not meet the criteria of the table (duplicate key, for example). When that happens I do not want any of the previous sets added to the database. I've implemented this with the following code, however, my rollback command doesn't appear to be making a difference. I've used this documentation: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/es/connector-net-examples-mysqltransaction.html
Dim transaction As MySqlTransaction = sqlConnection.BeginTransaction() sqlCommand = New MySqlCommand(insertStr, sqlConnection, transaction) Try
[code]....
I get the DUPLICATE KEY exception thrown, no Rollback Exception thrown, and every set of values up to duplicate key committed to the database.
if one installer class in my project and in custom action doing some procedure to validate the serial key using user interface editor during setup creation. while installing the set up if the condition is not true the setup in rolling back it is installing.
I have a certain problem with 2 number generators that I have. My problem is that I want them to act individually. To where they seperatly come up with a random number. Mine is from 1-6 for 2 random number to simulate the rolling of two 6 sided dice. The problem that I have is that when I run the program they always generate the same number no matter what that number is. When I step through it step by step while the program is running in the debug screen they come up with a different number. This is in visual basic 2010 express edition.

I'm doing some maintenance on some software originally built by my predecessor at the company (who has since moved on to greener pastures). I'm currently rolling out a new version of the software. At this company, the installation procedure is basically to just shove the /bin/Release directory out into our automated program updater's magic directory, allowing it to automatically copy the contents of that directory over to the local /Program Files/ and let the magic happen. The magic always seems to happen, so there's no big issue, there, although it does weird me out somewhat, after many years of .msi installers...
So my question is, I'm wiriting a VERY basic dice rolling program for my computer programming class in high school. I'm using a randomize function to generate numbers but I only want it to do numbers 1 - 6....how do I do this?
Dim x As Integer Randomize() x = CInt(10 * Rnd())
Dim Y As Integer Randomize() Y = CInt(10 * Rnd())
That is my code for my x and y (each die) to generate code, but how do I make it do 1 - 6 ONLY? Develope a game that in which a player rolls two dice. Each die has 6 faces. Each face contains 1, 2,3,4,5,6 after the dice have come to rest the sum of the spots is calculated, if the sum is 7 or 12 on the first throw, the player wins. If the sum is 2,3, or 11 on the first throw, the player loses, and the house wins. If the sum is 4,5,6,8,9,10 on the first throw the sum becomes the player's point. To win, a player must roll the dice until the plater rolls the point value. The player loses by rolling a 7 before rolling the point. I also have another question, How would I set this up to keep up with points and stuff? and the part that says "The player loses by rolling a 7 before rolling the point." I have no clue what to do on that. I'm not asking for code hand outs. I'm just asking what functions and such I'd use to write the code.
I'm using an Entity Framework context, and sometimes would like to create a transaction so that the client can do multiple changes and then commit/rollback them all together.However, if many changes were made, and SaveChanges() was called multiple times, after which a rollback is called, entities that were commited already, will remain the way they were commited, and would not roll back.Here's how my transaction-relative functions look like:
Public Sub BeginTransaction() Dim context = HttpContext.Current.GetObjectContext() If Not context.Connection.State = ConnectionState.Open Then context.Connection.Open() End If
[Code]...
Not only does the test fail, but it also leave the ObjectContext in an unstable mode, because it still has invalid changes in it.
I haven't touched a project in about 8 months. It's ongoing for work, but hasn't really been published fully so it gets worked on in my spare time. I went to recompile and the build failed. It had previously worked. I can't figure out why. Part seems to be due to AxOWC11 being recognized, but it shows up in the namespaces. I'm looking for the .dll that shows up as AxOWC11.dll, but I'm not seeing any. I do have one that shows up as AxInterop.OWC11.dll and I do have just a OWC11.dll in my list. I've posted some of the errors below.

I have an application with several forms. The form Main.vb has always been editable in the designer. However, this has changed. The icon in front of the name has changed to a module icon, and the designer and code are no longer found. When I run the application, it still functions as expected.
