Any Good Tutorials / Books / Blogs That Show A More In Depth Tutorial On Managing Memory

Sep 13, 2009

I probably confused memory usage issues with the UI sharing same thread as the processing (as pointed out by MusiGenesis below). However regarding the Memory usage. I am still not able to find VB.net specific syntax, although people have pointed out some great .Net and C# information below (and if I were more versed in those technologies, one could adapt to make work with VB.net).The general concepts are working fine, however I am having issues where the Mem Usage on Task Manager keeps growing as the program is used to load more and more files. On Startup, before doing anything, the VB application has 27,000 K.Once the file is parsed and even after I dispose of the File handle as well as the the data increases a lot. I strip out everything in the code and it still seems that memory in Mem Usage remains captured. There is no rhyme or reason as to why the Mem Usage is growing (i.e. sometimes it can grow by 20 mb when reading a 7mb file, however other times it does not increase at all, when reading a 3mb file). Sometimes, it appers to release some memory when the parsing is complete and other times it just holds.I have looked at .Net Memory Profiler and have not really been able to make heads or tails from that.I have read a lot on internet regarding Memory Management on .Net in General about Dispose and "Nothing" and DataSets, etc, however have not really found anything regarding VB.Net specifically. My General Question is: Are there any good tutorials/books/blogs/etc that show a more in depth tutorial on managing memory in a VB.Net application (i.e. how/when to dispose/close, etc), or does anyone have some specific tips from there experience.

Get A Primer On Creating Custom Controls?

VS 2010 Creating Custom Controls?

Aug 23, 2010

I got this whole thing pretty well down (it's actually quite easy), but I've seen custom controls created where you can click that little arrow on the top-right corner and add things or change things about it.

How exactly is this done? I'd Google it (which is why you don't see me post here too often) but I really don't know how to describe it.

VS 2005 - Creating Array Of Custom Controls?

Nov 6, 2009

I am creating an array of customer controls by doing the following:
Dim CtlLosArray(150) As Control

Then I'm setting up the first control in the array like this:
CtlLosArray(1) = New ShieldLOSInfobox
CtlLosArray(1).Location = New Point(0, 0)
CtlLosArray(1).Visible = True
CtlLosArray(1).Show()
CtlLosArray(1).Name = "Label1"
Me.pnlLOS.Controls.Add(CtlLosArray(1))

Now on this custom control I have a panel and a few text boxes and as you can see I may be adding about 150 of these custom controls. What I am wanting to do is to be able to access that control then the item on that control based on the array. Something like the following:
CtlLosArray(1).Controls.Item(Panel1).backcolor = Color.Yellow
But the above does not work. How I can access a specific item on the customer control within the array?

Good Custom Calender Control?

Nov 17, 2007

I'm looking for something relatively simple - just a monthly calender view where text can be placed on each individual day - just like a calender on a fridge (with a highlight for the current day). Slap it on a form or UC, set up a few properties and all done. I don't even need any clicking events - just a display.

The controls I've seen for sale are much more than what I need and creating my own, while an option, is something I'd rather not have to spend time on.

Good Time To Use Custom Events?

Nov 3, 2009

How to implement my own events I'm not sure why do I use them. I mean instead of rising event you could simply call functions right? This is as close as I got to a good reason:
1) If you call a function that does one thing and then based on result it needs to do something else it may be a good idea to do that something else in event function that is raised when that first thing was done. This way you avoid creating long functions and can make system more intuitive.
2) If object1 is inside object2 (a variable) and object2 has function DoThis and in that function affect something in object2's parent class it's better to use event in object1 rather than mess with parent (object1) inside object2.

VS 2008 Creating 'custom Code'

Aug 6, 2010

I have a form that is populated with specific data for each user. The user chooses this data themselves.I plan on saving this data in the application settings or via xml serialization.What I want to do, is allow users to generate a unique code for that data so that they can supply this code to others and all they will have to do is copy and paste it into their client and that data will populate for them.I could just allow users to trade XML files, but I want it to be easier than that.The form is basically setup this way;

Picture - Data 1, Data 2, Data 3, Data 4
Picture - Data 1, Data 2, Data 3, Data 4

The pictures correlate to pictures that are numbered anywhere from 0-600. The data can be any integer value from 0 - 200.

VS 2008 Creating A Custom Log File?

Dec 16, 2009

I'm running several different automated processes and when I get done with them, I show the results in a form with various controls.

In this form, I use Panels, Labels, TextBoxes, and TreeViews, and ListViews to display a wealth of information.

When the automation part is done, I want to be able to log this info and save that log file on the User's PC.

I thought it would be best to make a custom file extension and then hash it with MD5.

I'm pretty sure I can get all of that done. The problem is that I'm not sure how I would load that info back into the application.

Since the log files will appear on a seperate form, I can't just load the data back into the original controls.

Would it be best to create a blank template of controls and then load the data into those controls? Or is there a way to save content "as is", controls and all?

VS 2008 : Programmatically Creating Controls?

Sep 24, 2009

I have a panel that is a set size and has its Autoscroll property set to True.I am parsing text files and then adding them to the panel. I'm extracting specific lines and then adding them to labels and text boxes that are in the panel. When my app runs, it can parse anywhere from 0-10 files at a time.If there are no files to parse, I don't want any controls in the panel. I'll be creating the controls based on how many text files I have. For each text file, I'll have 3 controls.

I'll count the text files before I parse them, and insert the controls into the panel. The problem is that I don't know how to place the controls based on the location of the panel/form. I know the panel will always have a permanent spot, but I won't know if the location parameters of the panel have changed because I won't know how many controls there will be before the app parses the files.

However, I will know the size of the controls that I'm inserting. So, with all of that, is there a way to insert the controls inside of the panel, and then based on that information, insert the others?

VS 2008 Creating Controls With Code?

May 15, 2011

The editor basically uses a bunch of labels and pictureboxes (for now) and then an image is created from the panel which contains all of the controls. It sounds quite confusing, but basically i'm trying to create something like visual studio itself, which will allow "controls" to be added onto a panel, and then everything can be exported as an image when the user chooses to.I've worked out all the code to move controls and exporting the image, just having trouble trying to work out how to add an event for newly created controls as you can only handle a control, and not a variable.

VS 2008 Associating TextBoxes With Custom Controls During Runtime

Feb 2, 2010

I have a custom control that the User can add to the form. They can add as many of these controls as they like. When they add a control, I am going to populate another custom control, a textbox, in another panel.I need to figure out how to associate that new control with the previous one.So, let's say the User creates 3, let's say "Boxes", three TextBoxes are created. When the User adds something to Box1, TextBox1 needs to be populated a specific string.I know how to create and add the control as needed, but I can't figure out how to associate the controls, if that make sense. In order to distinguish the Boxes, I've added a label to them that represents each iteration of the box. The numbers start at 1 and increase from there.I was thinking I could use that to associate the TextBoxes and am working on that now.

VS 2008 - Creating Instances Of Controls On Form?

Sep 14, 2010

Is it possible to create instances of controls on a form ? Of course I mean visually , not just by code. After all, these languages define themselves as "Visual" so they should provide that possibility. It is important for the instances to be visible during design time because otherwise we could only guess where those controls might "land". Nevertheless , I have the feeling this is not possible in VB .NET but still I thought I should ask first ...
