.NET Application Crash With No Debug Info?
Nov 9, 2010
I have a backup program that is currently running in our Corporate Environment on about 70 machines. A mixture of Laptops, Desktops and Windows (xp-32, vista-32, vista-64, 7-32-7-64) with no problems.
There is one exception, and it's the reason I'm posting here for assistance.On one machine that is a Dell Latitude running Windows 7 64 bit with .Net 4 Framework installed the console application will crash immediately before it starts Sub Main. It simply give the generic windows error "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly." with no option to see debug info.

I'm struggling with a problem at remot installations. I released my Beta software which was always running fine on a lot of systems Win XP , Win2003, Win 7.Now I have a strange problem at some remote installation. After starting the program it will crash right away, not even geting throug the new or load Events.All my integrated debugging is useless. I don't know how I should debug such a problem.I guess there are some files missing at the remote systems. I have no idea which files. It could also be because of some third party components. I only have an event (see below) which is not of much help (to me).I found some other threads about the same CLR20r3 event but it was not very usefull. I need to get this application up and running. What steps should I take. I have some very good Beta testers.

I am working on a project in Visual Basic .NET 2010 on Windows 7 SP1 that previously ran fine in Windows XP SP3 but has recently started crashing immediately upon running the executable. I have made several additions/changes since the last time it was tested on XP, so it is difficult to pinpoint what might be the problem. (I commented out all of the start form's _Load event, which causes the form to load with no events triggered in the IDE, but the program still crashes in XP, so I suspect it's something other than my code, though I don't know what else could have changed to trigger it.)

so my data layer works with functions that return datasets. These datasets are generated by passing a stored procedure name, and a parameter array. Works absolutely great. Now, in my stored procedures i do a couple of print 'something' statements as part of a debug process. Is there any way I can read this information from .Net? Obviously, the select statement is returned to the dataset. what would be great is if I can create a log file, that prints the other info that i return via print.

If I am debugging from within Visual Studio, if an exception is thrown, the stack trace includes the assembly, method name and line number from the source code where the exception was raised. After running the installer, none of this information appears in the stack trace.
How do I get more verbose stack trace information in an executable created from an installer? I have set the Solution Configuration to Debug in Solution properties and defined a Debug constant in the project Compiler Advanced Options.

Had this matter on Xp machine and visual studio 2010 ultimate after windows update between december and january: even the simplest windows form program crash on start when starting for debug (inside Ide, F5) unless putting breakpoints on each line of the autogenerated (and marked as "debugger step thorugh") code.(see: [URL]) I was wondering if this matter affects only Xp machines, or if someone with Seven or Vista had same matter.

Since reinstalling VS2010, it has not been displaying proper debug info. I don't think I changed any settings but I have had a hunt through the options and can't see anything I might have messed up. I have had a quikck search and other people seem to have had the same problem but no solution. I'm running Windows 7 x64 with latest updates, if that matters.

I have recently implemented to following code on a good deal of my forms.
Public Overrides Function InitializeLifetimeService() As Object
Return Nothing
End Function
It has worked great to solve some of my odd application hangs when the application has been running > 1 week.However, when the user closes the program I now get an Application Crash screen.how to stop this? how to put it back to "normal" with a global variable?
Public Overrides Function InitializeLifetimeService() As Object
if readytoExit then
' Return... not nothing?[code]......

I've got quite a big application and I've just started noticing that not all runtime errors cause an error.
for example if I call a function that executes an SQL query and the query string uses invalid syntax or refers to a field that doesn't exist then that would normally cause an error at runtime. But it doesn't - as soon as it hits the error the function simply returns to the caller.
If I enclose the code in a try/catch then the error is trapped but, while developing, I just want a good old runtime error but not getting one.

I created a windows application service that runs every 20 seconds to collect data from avaya cms and then dump it into a database. I did this using a timer. Since I had to have access to the clipboard to get the data and parse it, I had to be in STA. Unfortunately,just putting the STA before the Main() (or any other sub) did not keep the service in single thread mode. So I had to create a new thread and join it like so:
Public Class CMS
Protected Overrides Sub OnStart(ByVal args() As String)
Timer1.Enabled = True
Timer1.Start()

I have an application which has 2 WebBrowser controls inside(both with script errors suppressed if thal). The application involves navigating to the same url every 3-4 seconds roughly(when the browser is ready).After a while it will crash and tell me flash.ocx is missing and is not included with this version of windows(w7 and vista). I troubleshoot the problem and tells me to update flash which does no fix the problem. This crash only happens when I run the application outside of the IDE btw and I get no errors in the IDE.

I have developed a server-client application. The program has multiple users each uniquely login in with their credentials to the system. The problem arises when the application crashes, pc shuts/restarts, the user then cannot log in as it is showing is still logged in. This is true because the last code from the program, which logs out the users , is not run because the program crashed or the pc , that is intalled on, lost power. Is there a way to go around this problem. I cannot deploy the application until this is fixed. I have placed on application exit and on last form`s closing event to logout users. It still keeps them logged in in some cases as I already stated previously.

What does "Generate Debug Info" mean in VB/C#? The difference between "none" and "pdb-only" only is pretty clear. But what about "pdb-only" and "full"?

Let's say 10 desktop shortcuts, all with different names/icons, point to and can start the same exe application from the same directory. Is there any means for the application to know the distinct name of the shortcut that was doubled_clicked. Also is there any means for a running application to know if it was started by command line, by a double_click on the exe, by a double_click on a shortcut that points to it, or by another process' call?

I've made some application in VB.NET 2005 and it works fine.I sent this application to the custemer and he is getting the following error at the application startup: "An unexpected error has occured. Would you like to restart the application?".
This guy is using Windows Vista. I've tested this application on several Vista machines and it works fine.
Do you have any idea how to debug it? Of course this guy doesn't have Visual Studio.

I develop windows applications in VB.NET using Visual Studio 2008. Recently I reloaded my pc and moved from XP to Windows 7 64 bit. Now when I am debugging, when I should get a runtime error, the executable instead locks up when it should bring up the code with the line that it crashed on like you'd expect in debug.
This doesn't happen all the time, only when I get a runtime error in a separate assembly that is not in the assembly I'm debugging. It used to work fine, but now it locks up. If I run the executable outside of Visual Studio (without debug) I at least get a runtime error like you'd hope for. I don't even get that when debugging.

I changed default form icon in VB 2010. It worked perfect. But I re-changed this icon (form's icon property) to another icon, and when I debug or built the application it is still showing the old icon, through it shows it perfectly in design mode... What is the problem?

I have a 3rd party program that has an internal messaging system built into it. The messages are stored in SQL. What I am doing is writing a program that will query this database on a specific interval and if it finds a message for a specific user it will take the text of that message and send it to the users email address(ie. gmail, yahoo, etc.). The issue is when the program quesries I only want it to grab the message that have not been sent. Each message in the system gets an ID assigned to it so what I'm trying is everytime it finds a message to send to the user it will write the ID of that message to a text file so that next time the query comes around it will compare the ID in the text file to the most recent ID in the database and if it is newer message it will get it and send it. I'm not trying to display any data from the query, just take the messsage text and send it.
Public Sub LookForMessage()
'Bind database tables to datagrid view
cmd = New SqlCommand("SELECT * FROM dbo.tblMessageTo", con)
cmd2 = New SqlCommand("SELECT * FROM dbo.tblMessages", con)

Simple question that does not seem to be covered: If I use a lot of Debug.WriteLine statements in my code, will they be completely absent in my production version?
I mean: Is the compiler smart enough to not emit any code for those calls? Or would I have to surround them by #if DEBUG..#end if directives?
