I'm migrating from VB6 to VB.NET, in hence my questions below:
I have to write a function that returns array of strings.
How can I initiate it to empty array? I need it since I have to check if it's empty array after it returns from this function.
Is list of arrays better for this purpose? If I use a list - Is it empty when it firstly defined? How can I check it it's empty?
This is probably a really basic question - but I have a list of items (custom objects) being passed from one winform (.net 3.5) to another. I want to create a local list to store changes that only get persisted if the user clicks save. Currently if the user clicks cancel - the changes are still applied in the first form because I assume the objects are reference type.I have the save working as it calls a service layer to do the save and then refreshes the other form - but not the cancel.

The code below contains the actual data I receive as input and the required output to send to a hardware device. The application requires incoming boolean values be processed in sets of 8, corresponding to their resultant Byte value. The first incoming boolean value must assume the least significant position of the resultant Byte Value. False, False, True, True, True, True, True, True will result in a Byte Value of 252 if viewing the resultant Byte value in the debugger. Those boolean values will be reversed in order to become True, True, True, True, True, True, False, False. What I can't figure out below is how to accomplish this in the form of masking or shifting the values to accomplish this.

I need a list of booleans (size anywhere from 200 to 200k). If i use System.Collections.Generic.List<bool> I'm going to suffer from serious boxing issues (correct me if I'm wrong). Basically I have and array of integers that vary in size. I need to compare each number to each other number and display which number is repeated. For example:

The number that shows up more than once is 2.
How can I run through the array and compare each integer with the numbers in the array. I tried a for loop but it didn't return the value I was looking for.

I'm trying to split an inputted string (txtStart.text) into separate integers. The split function works fine for me, but I can't figure out how to store the each part of the array... This is my current code that I based on an example from MSDN library:

Originally i wanted to ask if it's faster to sort Integers than Strings.But i have answered this question myself and i'm suprised of the big difference.Why is sorting and BinarySearch Integers as much faster compared to Strings?

Consider having large collections of "String-Integers"("1","2","3",...). Would it even be better to parse them to integers before sorting and searching them? What is the cost of parsing Strings to integers?
I am using an oleDb connection to connect to an excel spreadsheet (.xlsx) file and load the information into a datagridview. From there I hope to have it edited by a person and programmatically at runtime. However, I noticed that when I import a file that has integers in a column, it will not import any of the string values in that column.
