.net - Click-Once Deployment Overwriting User Settings?
Feb 4, 2010
Click-once deployments are suppose to maintain user settings, but on this one application we have the user settings are overwritten to the Visual Studio default every time we publish an update.

My deployment of upgrades to an application written in C# (.NET 3.0) consist of simply replacing an older .exe with the new one. Because that older version can currently be used by some customers, I simply rename the old version to blahblah.exe.old and copy the new one to the same folder. When the user opens up the application again, the new one loads up.
The problem is, every time I deploy a new version, the user scope settings are always reverted back to the default values.

I have a program, written in VB 2008, that I deplpoy in Terminal server, that has some user settings (scope: user) that I'd like to modify locally. By default the user settings were not even installed locally. I think they are supposed to appear in the ClickOnce data directory. Using the following thread, I was able to get the user.settings installed locally:
[URL]
basically, i set my xml file as "Content" and I set the publish status as "Data File".
With this, my settings file appears in:
"C:Documents and SettingsusernameLocal SettingsApplication DataCompanyXYZProgramNameL.exe_Url_arzmal0maveh1nnwfib245pfk13xqfma1.0.0.0user.settings"
The problem is that modifying this file doesn't affect the application. I changed some settings, restarted the app, and changes were ignored.

I am rewritting my application to conform to ms standards. We used to save all settings to registry for user settings, servername, size and locations.so we are now saving them into My.Settings app.config the only problem is that each time there is an update clickonce will isntall the newupdate but now all settings are loist and user has to save everything all over again..
I am trying to follow the book here but it seems i keep getting stuck somewhere. registry has worked fine for years but i understand we must move on, but if stuff like this happens then i just wasted a long time converting all code to conform for it to not work..

1. I can't find the file which reflects changes to user settings. This might be because I just can't find it (I can see a bunch of user.config files but they are all empty - weird!), or...
2. I'm not actually saving them when I think I am.
Regarding 2. - do I need to invoke
Is this all I need? And if so, why are my user.configs empty?

Is it possible to initialize a My.Settings value in a Visual Basic Deployment Project (VS 2008)? I can add the Radio Button Dialog to prompt the user, but I don't see how to use that to set the My.Settings value.

I am using the built-in My.Settings functionality in VB.NET to save application settings.
This is very convenient but I notice that each time I release a new version, the settings are lost.
Why and how can I prevent it?

I have developed a WinForm app using vb.net. The app needs to send an email notification to users containg the id of an item that needs thier attention. The email needs to contain the link and commandline parameters so that the user can clik on the link and the app will open the correct form, with the item to be updated, already loaded. Click Once installs the app under the users directory ("Documents nd setting\%USERNAME%Start MenuPrograms\%AppName%..."), so, the email has to contain the user name as part of the path.
- How can click once be configured so that the instalation is in the program files directory to avoid having to add the username as path of the path?
- how do send a link which contains a parameter that directs the app to load a speciified form (not the startup form)?

Hi, can anyone help me with a click once deployment query?I have packaged an application, using Click Once - it all works absolutely fine, with the exception of some files I need on the C: drive. For example: My application populates an Excel.xlt template with data, using an export function. The path of the template is c:program filesaem
eport.xlt
If the application is packaged, there is no option that I can see where you can include this template and the path to the file. The only way around it is to manually copy the template (and half a dozen other files in the same folder), after the click-once deployment - but this kind of defeats the object.

I'm using vb.net and the my.settings interface. I don't fully understand how to properly modify the applications configuration after deployment without having to recompile (click once). I've tried going into the app files and modifying it there but it doesn't seem to change in program. I'm just trying to find a good way to handle settings and My.Settings.

I'm trying to save a collection of key/value settings in my application's "user settings" (they're column widths), but while I see no errors, when I run the code (in the IDE) my collection in "My.Settings" is always nothing at startup. I do a "My.Settings.Save" when the application exits, and barring the "serializers not found" errors in the IDE, no other errors occur. When I run my application as an exe, it behaves the same way..

I think this has to do with a third party OCX control. Below is the output when the application starts. When I install my application on a stand-alone PC or most PCs in a networked environment it runs fine. When I go to some offices that have very tightly controlled networks I have problems.
The set up won't run under the user name so someone from IT must log in as administrator. They run the set up and the application installs and runs fine. The IT person logs off and the user tries to run it and the application won't even start. An error box appears and below is the report. SCANNERLib.DLL is the third party control. Maybe there is something I'm missing when I compile. Maybe the DLL registering funny under the Admin rights. [Code]

I have a vb.net application that uses Flash movies (AxShockwaveFlashObjects.AxShockwaveFlash). I have buttons in the flash movie. When they first start using the application, they can single click on the buttons in the flash movie and button responds accordingly. But after a while (and I haven't been able to pin-point an exact thing that changes it or my issue would be solved), the user has to double-click on the button in the flash movie for them to work.

My freeware program launches 50 freeware programs and provides a guide for PC maintenance and health. As mentioned in another post, my program was reviewed on Sofpedia. One thing the Reviewer criticized was the fact that my program requires the user to install these 50 programs in the default locations (usually C:Program Filesx). The reviewer thinks it would be best if the user can install to any location he/she desires and my program be able to point to the proper location when launching the application.

So, I've created a form that allows for the user to save his or her settings after closing it. When using Visual Basics to run the program, there is no problem and it works wonders. Here is the problem. When I run the program not in Visual Basics, when I go to open the form, it fails. At first, it was because I didn't update the configuration file to include the new settings. Which was dumb, of course, but I updated the file and made sure to put it with the program.

I'd like to know if there's a better way to read/write various user settings to disk. My program loads up a bunch of settings during load but also during execution from a few different forms, encrypted string values, boolean values, different types. The code seems to work okay but I have a feeling it's just not the best way to be doing this. Some of the settings are encrypted strings that have to be decrypted/encrypted so the code to read/write the text file is a bit different on some items. The data read from disk usually goes to a public string, a textbox, or a up/down type control. Below is about 1/10th of the settings that get loaded/written at various times. Anyone have a better way that might be more efficient that I should look at?
[Code]...
