I'm using vb.net and the my.settings interface. I don't fully understand how to properly modify the applications configuration after deployment without having to recompile (click once). I've tried going into the app files and modifying it there but it doesn't seem to change in program. I'm just trying to find a good way to handle settings and My.Settings.
View 2 Replieswe have several applications in Vb.Net using the built in log system (My.Log) to write log information. Until now this system was configured by the application.config file before execution but now we want to let the user to choose some options.
Is there a way that does not requires to parse the XML file and process it? Is there available something like My.Settings that will do the dirty job done?
An example would be to be able to modify the DefaultSwitch value from Verbose to Warning or changing a property of the FileLog like the maxFiles attribute:

I got the below code from Deborah Kurata one of the msdn moderator on her webpage. Her code is to save the form size at runtime but i would like to modify it to save the buttons which i have dragged and drop. I tried to modify the code but i tend to when i put the Dim theButton = DirectCast(sender, Button) under the form load method. It put there cannot cast object. something like that.

View 2 RepliesI have developed a WinForm app using vb.net. The app needs to send an email notification to users containg the id of an item that needs thier attention. The email needs to contain the link and commandline parameters so that the user can clik on the link and the app will open the correct form, with the item to be updated, already loaded. Click Once installs the app under the users directory ("Documents nd setting\%USERNAME%Start MenuPrograms\%AppName%..."), so, the email has to contain the user name as part of the path.
- How can click once be configured so that the instalation is in the program files directory to avoid having to add the username as path of the path?
- how do send a link which contains a parameter that directs the app to load a speciified form (not the startup form)?

View 2 RepliesHi, can anyone help me with a click once deployment query?I have packaged an application, using Click Once - it all works absolutely fine, with the exception of some files I need on the C: drive. For example: My application populates an Excel.xlt template with data, using an export function. The path of the template is c:program filesaem
eport.xlt
If the application is packaged, there is no option that I can see where you can include this template and the path to the file. The only way around it is to manually copy the template (and half a dozen other files in the same folder), after the click-once deployment - but this kind of defeats the object.
I would like to make sure that my application is installed in the correct location on the hard drive or allow the user to determine the install location.

View 1 RepliesI am creating a program that will be sold as a subscription. I am trying to decide how to prevent users from passing the program to others without purchasing it. I was thinking that on the very first run, the program could pull the MAC address from the computer it is run on, and create a constant at run time. This constant is then hard wired into the program and is used for comparison every time the program is run thereafter. If the MAC address do not match, it is on a different computer.
How do I recompile my .exe to include a globally declared constant used for comparison? And how do I use this variable throughout my program?Or is there a simpler way to create my program to require Key Codes for renewal once per year?

View 2 RepliesUsing VS 2008, I run into problems with many pacakages because when I make changes and press the green arrow key to compile and run, it does not always recompile, so sometimes I run the former executable, even though I made changes to it.Anybody came accross that problem? It is very annoying. The only way that I can make sure VB recompiles my program after a change, is to manually delete the executable in bin/debug before running it, otherwise I keep on seeing bugs in my program that I just fixed.Usually if I recreate my package from scratch, the problem disappears for a while, so I suspect that the problem is caused by a setting that changes by itself in my package, but I have no proof of that.

I have particular methods (iside the interface dll file) that extract information of real Implementation from AppSettings keys in order to instance it using reflection. I use the Manager inside the Excecutable, but when I try to retrieve a especific key defined in "Manager.dll.config" (appSettings), the value returned is empty because the configuration file used is "Excecutable.exe.config" I need this configuration information in Manager config file because this Manager will be used from other programs and the configuration must be centralized into that config file to replicate the possible changes to every app calling this dll.How can I to specify that the ConfigurarionManager.AppSettings must extract values from manager.dll.config file?

What boggles my mind is that this all works fine in my C# console test app after I convert the code from VB.NET using a web utility. However, when I paste the VB code from my web app into my VB.NET console test app, it doesn't work there, either, so it appears to be a C#/VB issue. What am I doing wrong here?

I am deploying sql express as a prerequisite. I have created a custom prerquisite using bootstrap manifest generator. The problem I have is replacing the template.ini file which exists in the sqlexpr32.exe cab file. Winrar and winzip allow me to open the sqlexpr32.exe but will not allow me to edit, add or replace the template.ini.I also cannot find the path where the sqlexpr32.exe extracts to as I want to use that path for the settings file eg "template.ini".[code]
