.net - Creating A Hello World Library Function In Assembly And Calling It From C#?

May 18, 2010

Let's say we use NASM as they do in this answer: how to write hellow world in assembly under windows.I got a couple of thoughts and questions regarding assembly combined with c# or any other .net languages for that matter.First of all I want to be able to create a library that has the following function HelloWorld that takes this parameter: Name In C# the method signature would looke like this: void HelloWorld(string name) and it would print out something like Hello World from name To sum it up Create a routine in ASM ( NASM ) that takes one or more parameters Compile and create a library of the above functionality Include the library in any .net language Call the included library function Bonus features How does one handle returned values? Is it possible to write the ASM-method inline When creating libraries in assembly or c, you do follow a certain "pre defined" way, the c calling convetion, correct?

C# - Retrieve Info In DLL Assembly About Calling Assembly?

Jun 25, 2012

I have created several DLL (.NET) libraries that are used in several projects. In these DLL libraries I want to know/retrieve which assembly (EXE) calls/uses the library, so if possible I want to know info like assembly name (EXE), strong name, version number, etc.

NB: Examples may be in C# or VB. I use both languages.

Anyone know of a library/assembly that can be used to generate a PDF from within a .net application.I know there are free PDF 'printer' drivers that could be installed separately but is there anything that can do it directly from within the application? VS 2008 : Calling A .NET Assembly From VB6?

Jun 30, 2010

I have created a .NET assembly, clicked 'Register for COM Interop' on the properties page, strongly named it and compiled it. Then I GAC'd the .NET DLL manually. Calling the .NET assembly from my VB6 code with 'CreateObject("MyNETProject.class1")' gives me an automation error. I've gone through about 3 iterations of this for most of the day and cannot sort out what I'm doing wrong. I have a feeling it's got to do with my .NET assembly settings and GACing but it all seems right.

Visual Studio 2008 - Assembly To Import DLL Library In .NET?

Feb 17, 2012

I am trying to import the GetWindowText in a VB.NET application. So based on other sites you just have to import the interopt service and add a DLLImport statement similar to C#. But somehow it is not recognizing the statement and getting a BC30001 (Statement is not valid in a namespace) compile error.

Here is the code I used.Imports System.Runtime.InteropServices

<DllImport("user32", CharSet:=CharSet.Auto, SetLastError:=True)> _Public Shared Function GetWindowText(ByVal hWnd As IntPtr, <Out(), MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.LPTStr)> ByVal lpString As StringBuilder, ByVal nMaxCount As Integer) As Integer End Function

Build Error - Cannot Find Wrapper Assembly For Type Library

Oct 20, 2010

A co-worker checked a very simple Visual Basic Visual Studio 2010 application into our version control system. When I checked it out and tried to build it I got the weird error below, which I am guessing has something to do with which .Net Framework the build is targetted towards and also which Framework I have installed.

Calling Methods In Non-assembly (non-managed) Dlls Through Reflection In .net?

Dec 26, 2011

I want to use reflection to dynamically call a dll (not an assembly, non-managed, possibly COM object model) in vb.net.I've seen several different methods of calling a method in a dll that is a .net assembly - but I have not found the way to dynamically call a method inside of a dll like user32.dll or winmm.dll. I believe this would be called late-binding?

The reason I'm asking is because I am building a language that will depend on external libraries for lots of different functionality. An example (in this language I'm building):

Declare Function mciSendStringA using "winmm.dll" (strCommand As String, strReturn As String, returnLength As Integer, blah As Integer) As Integer

Declare Function WriteConsoleA using "kernel32.dll" (hConsoleOutput As Integer, lpBuffer As String, numberofcharstowrite as Integer, lpReserved as Integer) As Boolean

When I build the interpreter for the call to mciSendString in winmm.dll, how can I use reflection to handle this? I want the user to be able to reference any dll/method they wish. Can I get some guidance in the right direction? Perhaps even some vb.net code that I can take apart and understand?

Calling Shared Methods From .NET Class Library In VB6

Jan 25, 2010

I have the following class in a .NET class library:

Code:
Public Class JasonTest
Sub New()
End Sub

The .AddNumbers call works fine, but the AddStrings call yields the error 'Object doesn't support this property or method'.

Is there any way to call a shared method from .NET in VB6? I was unable to find any documentation on this.

Setting A Variable To Accept The Result Of A Function By Calling The Function With Many Parameters

Feb 17, 2011

I'm currently working with a client's VB.Net code, which was developed for them by a small development shop a few years ago and which they purchased and have been maintaining and uprgrading since. This client's primary developer is out on indefinite (likely permanent) medical leave and I'm now filling in until they bring in a full timer (as I'm a contractor here). My current task is to add some functionality to a the VB.Net code they purchased. I'm finding practices and techniques in the code that absolutely baffle me and can't make the code do what I want. I'm starting to wonder if it's me and was hoping to get some thoughts on the code I've encountered.

For example: Setting a variable to accept the result of a function by calling the function with many parameters, clearing the parameters in the function, setting them to some value, calling another function with those new values, then never using the values returned by the functions. I'll add a code snippet in the first comment since this is already getting long.

Calling DoEvents From Inside Custom Control Library

Sep 21, 2010

I have a custom control's library. Now there's a control which looks like a panel, and when it opens up I want to animate its vertical growing like this:

For h As Single = 0 To finalHeight Step 0.5
Me.Height = CInt(h)
' HERE I WANT TO CALL DoEvents'
Next
Me.Height = finalHeight

If I don't call DoEvents in the loop then the animation is not shown, I only get the final height without a visual feedback along the way. I can call DoEvents from inside my main WinForm project, but can't inside a library. How can I do that, without drowning into the deep threads waters?

Threaded Function Call Slower Than Calling Function Directly?

Sep 14, 2010

I have a function where I am performing a lot number of database operations inside a Sub. The operation when called directly like:ExecProcess()

takes about 11 seconds to run. However, if I create a Delegate, and call the sub using BeginInvoke(), the very same process takes over 40 seconds to execute. Here's the threaded code:

Protected del As ProcessDelegate
Protected Delegate Sub ProcessDelegate()
del = New ProcessDelegate(AddressOf SELocal.ExecJob)
Dim cb As New AsyncCallback(AddressOf Me.ExecJobComplete)
del.BeginInvoke(cb, del)

Anyone know what may cause a function to take longer inside a new thread, rather than calling directly?

Reflected Method From A Loaded Assembly Executes Before Calling Method?

Jun 9, 2009

When I am loading an Assembly dynamically, then calling a method from it, I appear to be getting the method from Assembly executing before the code in the method that is calling it.It does not appear to be executing in a Serial manner as I would expect. Can anyone shine some light on why this might be happening. Below is some code to illustrate what I am seeing, the code from the some.dll assembly calls a method named PerformLookup. For testing I put a similar MessageBox type output with "PerformLookup Time: " as the text. What I end up seeing is:

First: "PerformLookup Time: 40:842"
Second: "initIndex Time: 45:873"

Call A CLR User Defined Function Within The Assembly

Feb 14, 2012

The main function receives data, uses additional functions to calculates the result and gives it back. But at one point, the function needs data from the SQL Server. I wrote a second UDF, made it visible and deployed it to the SQL Server. I see now two functions under > programmability > functions > scalar value functions:

1. The main function (IsCalcDay) and

2. The function with the data access (IsHoliday)

If I call directly the second function from VST in the debug mode, it works fine, bur if I call it via the main function, the code stops if the connection will be opened. The error is "Data access in this context is not permitted. The context is a function or method that is not marked with DataAccessKind.Read SystemDataAccessKind.Read or a callback to retrieve data from the FillRow method of a table-valued function or a UDT validation method." (translatet from German, probably slightly differnt in English)

VST (2010 prof) and the SQL Server (2008 R2) are running in my virtual W7 maschine.

Here is the code of the second function:

Imports System
Imports System.Data
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Imports System.Data.SqlTypes

[Code]....

Why can I open the connection if I call the function directly, but it fails if the function is called from another function?

VS 2010 - Creating Library To Encrypt / Decrypt Files With AES

Sep 20, 2011

I'm attempting to create a little library to encrypt and decrypt Files with AES. There are loads of examples of how to do this on the internet so coding is not a problem. There are however a few questions regarding cryptography and AES in general.

#1 Does the IV need to be kept a secret like the key ?
#2 Can I just hash a string with SHA512 to make a key for AES ? or do I need to use PasswordDeriveBytes ?
#3 In the case of me using PasswordDeriveBytes Do I need to keep the salt a secret ?(or do I need to keep it at all)
#4 Can I generate the IV from the same password that the Key is derived from ?(if so How ?)

VS 2010 Creating A Windows Form Template/library?

Feb 12, 2011

I have a project that will need several forms with a similar structure - a Data Grid View control, a few buttons and some textboxes. They are not similar enough to use just one form and change things programatically so I would like to create a "template" and add several copies of it into my project. My first attempts have failed miserably, ending up with lots of "conflicts" and "duplicate items".

So, how should I save a form from my existing project in such a way that I can then load in multiple copies (giving them suitably different names) without having name conflicts?

Creating A Custom Media Library - Loading Images For Rendering?

Jul 22, 2010

i'm working on a project right now and I need to create a graphic library. The game I'm experimenting with is an RPG; this project is expected to contain many big graphic files to use and I would prefer not to load everything into memory at once, like I've done before with other smaller projects. So, does anyone have experience with libraries such as this one? Here's what I've came up with:

Have graphic library files and paths in an XML file Each entry in the XML file would be designated "PERMANENT" or "TEMPORARY", with perm. being that once loaded it stays in memory and won't be cleared (like menu-graphics)The library that the XML file loads into would have a CLEAR command, that clears out all non-PERMANENT graphics I have experience throwing everything into memory at startup, and with running the program running with the assumption that all necessary graphics are currently in memory.

DB/Reporting :: How To Setup A 'Library' Function

Dec 23, 2008

I'm working on a Free, Open Source Multimedia player. I'm hoping if I do it right, I can have it beat out WMP and iTunes. As this is the case, I'm trying to program the whole thing without connecting to either WMP or iTunes through COM or ActiveX, and not use any of the .dlls.One of my current problems is that I can't seem to figure out how to setup a "Library" function. What I'm thinking right now is I want to setup a database, and then connect to it. I was able to create a Local Database, and setup my Table and Fields, but I don't know how to connect to the database; I figured out how to create a new instance of the table, but those get deleted as soon as the program is closed. If anyone has a suggestion on how to do this, or a tutorial they can point me to, that would be fantastic. My only stipulation I have is I'd like to be able to use SQL searches on the database, to make searching for song faster.

Calling A C DLL Function?

Oct 3, 2011

I have used the PInvoke Signature Toolkit to create VB.NET function definitions for three fairly simple C functions contained in an external DLL. The problem is that two of the parameters are structures so pointers need to be sent and one structure (fileview) is undefined.

OpenFileView(filename, &fileview_ptr)
ReadFileInfo(fileview_ptr, &fileinfo_ptr)

The structure of fileinfo is defined so I can create a structure definition in VB.NET and create an IntPtr to that structure with Marshall.AllocHGlobal. And then I can use Marshall.StructureToPtr to copy the data and do the inverse when the data is returned.
