C# - Call .NET 4.0 WPF Class Library From 2.0 Application
Apr 8, 2011I have an application written in .NET 4.0 that i compile into a DLL file. I want to be able to use this DLL file in a Windows Forms .NET 2.0 application. I don't need the application to really interact much, except just passing a couple string values to the 4.0 DLL. The DLL is pretty much a bunch of Windows which i converted to UserControls and i just need to be able to reference them to display the UserControls from the 2.0 application without having to use a different exe and having to package them separately.
What is the best way to do this? Because when i try to add the reference to the DLL to the 2.0 application, it gives me and error saying the DLL is built in a newer version of .NET so i can't do it that way. Is this where a COM object would come in?

Dec 4, 2011I want to create a new instance of a class when I click on a button, but I need to interact with members of that class using other controls on the form, so I need the class to have a global scope. I know I could call the new class in formload, but the class creates certain variables that need to be current. If it is done on formload, the variables wouldn't be current, because if the class is created at formload, it would have different info at that time. Surely, there must be a way to create an instance of the myClass from within a sub that is accessible from other subs of the same class.

Sep 1, 2009I have a Windows form Application that I am creating, could also be a Windows Service that I need to run.There are basically 2 Classes that were converted from java to vb.net and 1 xml file to this. for testing purposes I would like to use the Button.click event to manually run the code.However i get an error when trying to call the sub/function the normal way.I even tried to put this classes information in the Public Class Form1 but it keeps on giving me errors.This is the Sub:

so how do I call it from a Button.click event?
normally i would just do a "call main()" and it works however this time it is not because of the (byVal args() as string)

Jan 20, 2012I've created a dialog which I'd like to popup from any function or sub in any class or form that I have in a project. It would nice to have it work exactly like a messagebox except it's got a progressbar and a cancel button on it. It's job is to display the progress of other functions so it should just stay open until I close it or the user selects cancel.Now I've found many of the basic examples on the net and have got the dialog working exactly as they have shown it. The trouble is that the examples are using a counter or thread.sleep which simply adds +1 in the DoWork sub. In other words, it validates that a worker thread can update a progressbar but it's a closed loop that only exists in the dialog's class.The examples don't show how to call an unkown function in another class dynamically, they're simply a hard coded 1+1 in DoWork. To me it's not a real world example because it doesn't show how to plug into the dialog or get a communication stream from other classes and functions that are running and wanting to increment the progressbar.[code]

Maybe this question should be in an ASP forum, but it is a VB question. This simple web service allows you to type in your name and it response with an alert box with you name.
My question is, How can you call a function with 2 arguments when the function is only defined for one. I understand that the second argument is actually a method that handling the respons, but how can you interchange function arguments for methods and how do you know that there are methods for

Adding A Windows Service Class To A Class Library
Feb 14, 2012I have a class library in VB.NET that does a NET-envelope for an USB device driver.There is only one function of that driver that I could not envelope in a traditional class, but I had to put it in a Windows Service as described here:Sharing a class property (field) between applications.The Windows Service works fine, but I have now two projects for my NET-envelope: the one with the class library, the second with the windows service and I do not like the idea to maintain two distinct projects for the same driver.Is it a good practice (or even if possible) to add a windows service class to a normal class library (without creating its own project as described in the vb tutorial)?I know, in any case I should create a separate setup only for the windows service, but in this way I could have together all the classes that envelope my usb device driver in only one project.

May 18, 2010I've createda vb.net class library where I've defined a number of small classes... nothing complicated, just working with strings, sending emails, etc.In another project, I reference the class library and I'm seemingly able to create an instance ofone of tclasses - intellisense shows me all of the plic properties, methods, etc... all looks perfect. No compile errors at all, nothing b gumdropsand lollipops.When I run the app I'm working on that references the class library, it fails at the point where I'm creating an instance of the class and gives me a vague exception, "System.TypeLoadException".

Call A Function From Inside Another And Suspend It Until The Called Function Is Finished
Jan 25, 2010How can I call a function from inside another function and suspend the calling function until the called function is finished? I hope I can get some replies because I don't know how to ask the question and make sense:).
Anyway what I am trying to do in steps:
1. The user clicks button1 which triggers the click event.
2. From the click event I call a function
3. I then pop-up a form, that has instructions for the user to read.
4. After the user has read the form he will click the "Done" button and return to the calling function.
The problem is the the calling function continues to execute. I want to stop execution of the calling function until the users clicks the "Done" button on the instruction pop=up. I know I can use a msgbox but the instructions can be lengthly and does not look good in a msgbox.
I have tried the Call method with return in the "Done" button click but I can make that work. I also tried a goto statement but I can get that to work either. In the call statement I said call frmInstruction.show() and it got there but as I said the calling function continued to execute.

takes about 11 seconds to run.However, if I create a Delegate, and call the sub using BeginInvoke(), the very same process takes over 40 seconds to execute.Here's the threaded code:

In order to do that, I will need to supress what is happening in the AddAttributesToRender method because the name of the function is hard-coded there. Here is what comes up in Reflector for the AddAttributesToRender function in RegularExpressionValidator:

Call Method Base Class In Program Passing Sub Class Objects?
Apr 22, 2012Base class has one field to hold numeric balance value. With 2 methods that accept arguments for adding and subtracting the new input calculating new balance. Sub class has four fields dates, transaction, memo and amount.I have a deposit form, and withdraw form. Each time one transaction is entered it creates an object with sub class fields, then adds to the account collection. My problem is not understanding how to call the deposit/withdraw method and pass the current transaction amount back to the base class to alculate the new balance. Does anyone have any links to information/tutorials on how to perform something like this? As you can see with my code I have tried various different approaches without any success.

What I must do? I need to right click in solution explorer add new item->add->class and copy here this code?
After I write the code I chose from the vb menu: Build->Build Solution_name
Before writing the code I choose File->New->and selected class library then save all to save as a project.
Or class library is only a dll file that runs with a windows forms application. (that is added after i write the code for write library).

Oct 18, 2010I have two projects; A and B, where B needs to use some classes that are in project A. Hence, I added B to A's solution, and in B I added a reference to project A.
Is that sensible? Or should I rather put those classes in a class library?
I see that if I further want to open form/program B from a menu option in project A, then A needs a reference to B. Which would not be possible if B already had a reference to A. However if I use the class library for the common classes, then it's ok as B doesn't need the A reference.
Does this sound logical? It would be nice to know what are typical reasons for putting projects in the same solution, and if it's advised to use libraries aggressively to refactor common code between two projects, even if it's just a couple of classes.. Yet I've never made my own library, so a bit unsure on when to use it.

DB/Reporting :: How To Setup A 'Library' Function
Dec 23, 2008I'm working on a Free, Open Source Multimedia player. I'm hoping if I do it right, I can have it beat out WMP and iTunes. As this is the case, I'm trying to program the whole thing without connecting to either WMP or iTunes through COM or ActiveX, and not use any of the .dlls.One of my current problems is that I can't seem to figure out how to setup a "Library" function. What I'm thinking right now is I want to setup a database, and then connect to it. I was able to create a Local Database, and setup my Table and Fields, but I don't know how to connect to the database; I figured out how to create a new instance of the table, but those get deleted as soon as the program is closed.If anyone has a suggestion on how to do this, or a tutorial they can point me to, that would be fantastic. My only stipulation I have is I'd like to be able to use SQL searches on the database, to make searching for song faster.
