Asmx Json Serialization Versus Wcf Json Serialization?

Nov 24, 2011

I have two experimental web services. One is an asmx contained within a .net web application. The other is a WCF service library being invoked from the web application.The asmx basically does everything I need, but I think WCF would be better, except that it doesn't do anything as I would expect after fiddling with the asmx service.For example, the same method behaves differently in each:

' ASMX
<WebMethod(BufferResponse:=True, EnableSession:=False)>
Function Test(aObject as Object) as Object
' object will have been successfully serializaed into a dictionary

Web Services - POST A JSON To A Specific Url Using .NET?

Sep 12, 2011

I'm a newbie about web services in VB.NET. I'm making a desktop application that will talk to JIRA[URL]..They provided a REST api that I decided to use. The first step is to login which they say that...

"To log in to JIRA, you need to POST a username and password in JSON format..."
{"username" : "admin", "password" : "admin"}
to this url...
https://addressgoeshere (we are using https)

Can someone provide me a sample code to do this so I can have a guide and a good start?

Twitter Json - Unable To Convert To Jobject Or Jarray Using Json.net / Javascriptserializer?

May 9, 2012

I am been stuck on this for 3 days now...I have been accessing the twitter api to pull a user_timeline for a list of users and the json that comes back is impossible to work with. I tried to deserialize it using javascriptserializer and get an error:invalid object passed in , ':' or '}'

Now this is frustrating since I expect the json being returned to be error free. Then I tried json.net and split the posts using string.split and tried to convert each post to Jobject or jarray. for Jarray I get

'unexpected end of content while loading jArray

[Code]...

Now I have formatted the code here and not pasted the whole file but it does look like valid json to me and I do not alter anything after receiving the stream from the twitter api. Can someone please point me in the right direction? I really need to get this stuff parsed?

Convert JSON String To JSON Object?

Jan 18, 2012

I have a JSON response from a web service that I need to be converted to an object then to an array. My response is similar to the one below:

{"status":{"error":"NO","code":"200","description":"none","message":"Request ok"},"geolocation":{"lat":"38.89515","lng":"-77.0310"},"stations":[{"country":"United States","regPrice":"0.00","midPrice":"0.00","prePrice":"0.00","streetAddress":"1401, I St[code]....

I am doing this is VB.NET within a console for now. Basically I am trying to create a simple way to test my API calls and output the information. What I am trying to accomplish is having to loop through the JSON array and list the stations.

Asp.net - Resize An Image In ASPNET VB

Oct 6, 2011

I would like for a user to upload an image to a file in my web application. However, before being saved I want to resize the image to a specified size. I have found code on the Internet to do what I want but I am having trouble adapting to meet my needs. Here is the part I am having trouble with:

' Resize Image Before Uploading to DataBase
Dim imageToBeResized As System.Drawing.Image = System.Drawing.Image.FromStream(FileUpload1.PostedFile.InputStream)

[Code]....

Rather than upload to a database I want to save the image to a folder in my web application. The problem I have encountered is that VB won't let me save a byte() to a folder. Not sure what I can safely change to adapt for my purposes. Why does it need to be changed to a byte() in the first place?

Convert JSON To Array OR JSON To XML?

Jul 17, 2011

How can I convert a JSON string to an array OR a JSON string to XML in VB.NET? I know how to do this in C#, as I have read dozens of articles on it, however, I am unable to figure out how to achieve the same result in VB.NET.

I'm using the System.Web.Script namespace via System.Web.Extensions.dll (from Microsoft).

I'm willing to use an additional DLL file if needed.

Using JSON.NET To Parse JSON Generated Through PHP?

Mar 2, 2010

I'm sure this has been asked before but I'm not finding quite the information I'm needing so I thought I'd post this.

I've written a PHP script that returns a simple JSON object that looks like this:

{"status":"success","level":"admin"}

I'm doing a standard web request that submits the required data to the script over the internet and that's working fine.

Now, I want to use JSON.NET to pull out the individual variables so I can know what the values of "status" and "level" are. The problem is, I have no idea where to start.

I'm doing this in VB.NET (on the .NET Compact Framework).

Create FK To Model, From Aspnet Forms Validation Tables

Jan 17, 2012

I've recently created a MVC 3 ASP.net application (using VB). I have also created forms validation by running aspnet_regsql. I used this to create the table in the same database as my application uses. I am trying to work out how to create a new model, with a FK from the Users table. Do I have to reverse engineer the validation tables to create models in my application? right now, the tables only exist on the SQL 2008 database, as they were created by running the aspnet_regsql command, and do not exists as models in my ASP.net solution. Here is the code I have now, for a model I would like to add a FK to (as a one-to-many relationship):

Imports System.Data.Entity
Imports System.ComponentModel
Imports System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations

.net - JSON Parsing Using JSON.net?

Feb 15, 2011

I am accessing the facebook api and using the json.net library (newtonsoft.json.net)I declare a Jobject to parse the content and look for the specific elements and get their values. Everything works fine for the first few but then I get this unexplained nullexception error " (Object reference not set to an instance of an object)Now I took a look at the declaration but cannot see how to change it. Dim jobj as JObject = JObject.Parse(responseData) message = jobj("message").tostring

The error occurs at the last line above.I check to see if message is null and then look for the next desired field as follows

[Code]...

This is one example where "message" does not appear in the first few lines but appears later. So what I do is look for position of message and description and which ever is first go and get that and if I get an error or the fields do not return anything, I try and parse by regex and even that is not working right.

IDE Versus EXE Performance In .NET?

Oct 5, 2009

I've developed a .NET application that, among other things, does the following:Uses WebClient to retrieve data from a remote server.
Serves as a socket server to 2 'satellite' applications run on the same machine or on a LAN.When I run the app in the VS IDE, it works great. It quickly gets the data from the remote server and communicates perfectly with the 2 satellites.However, when I build it and run it as an EXE, the response from the remote server is very slow and its communication with the 2 satellite applications become very poor.Is there some important difference between running an app in the IDE and running it as an EXE that could effect it like this?

Objective C Versus .net?

Apr 9, 2011

For every member object I have to declare the variable 3 times.One in the declaration. One for property declaration. One to tell the compiler to synthesize all the function. Another one to release all those members from memory.Then I learn about Core Data. I generate diagram, poof the classes are made from me and a lot of things are done behind the screen of that visible classes.

Basically Core Data in Objective C represents some form of relational databases. Of course those databases can have relationship, including many to many relationship. The additional detail of having a third table for many to many relationship is already done.Then, there is indexed property so we can search faster. That's also done.

Using JSON With .NET ASP.NET 2.0?

Nov 3, 2011

I'm trying to understand how to actually use, and create JSON data.

StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
StringWriter sw = new StringWriter(sb);
using (JsonWriter jsonWriter = new JsonTextWriter(sw))

[code]....

and I am sure it does... but how do I view it? How do I turn that into an object that the browser can output.It seems to me that the first stage I need to resolve is "how to create" JSON files/strings, next stage will be how to actually use them. If it helps answer the question, what I'm aiming for initially is to be able to use AJAX Autocomplete from a search page generated from my MySQL database, I was hoping I could write a simple SQL query and have that returned using something similar to the above?

Asp.net - SQL Transactions: TSQL Versus .NET?

Nov 19, 2010

I wanted to know what (if any) differences there are to using the SQL Transaction within the application versus written into the stored procedure using TSQL statement. We would need to restructure the stored procs and vb code to get this to work and I'm not sure it would be worth the effort at this time.

Public Sub RetrieveTData(ByVal cID As String, ByVal cnn As SqlConnection) As Boolean
Dim sqlTran As SqlTransaction
cnn.Open()
sqlTran = cnn.BeginTransaction

[code].....

We aren't certain whether the timeout is occurring in DataAlreadyTransferred() or usp_BigNasty_CopyDataFromDB1toDB2 due to how the try/catch is written. We can restructure this code, but will take a week or so to get it to production (no errors occur on test/dev today)

DB1 - permanent storage, used by other applications as well
DB2 - working set, used only by Web App

DataAlreadyTransferred(cID) first checks to see if DB2 has any copies of the records, if DB2 does and those records are clean it deletes them (data could have changed in DB1 and we want the most up-to-date version). If DB2's data is dirty it is left alone and no data is deleted.

usp_BigNasty_CopyDataFromDB1toDB2 copies rows from approximately 20-30 different tables and copies over the perm copies from DB1 into DB2, essentially creating a working set from which the Web App can access

We are aware this is inefficient and are examining ways to improve it, just haven't had time yet... I believe by having the transactions in the app code it's locking many more tables than is really needed. If we move them to the stored procs, less tables will be locked at one time thus improving our chances of removing deadlock conditions/timeout issues we're seeing today. Just not sure on this..

C# - Appropriate To Use Generics Versus Inheritance?

Apr 28, 2009

What are the situations and their associated benefits of using Generics over Inheritance and vice-versa, and how should they be best combined?I'm going to try to state the motivation for this question as best I can:I have a class as shown below:

[Code]...

Now suppose I have a repository that takes an InformationReturn argument, that has to strore different fields in a DB depending on the type of Info object T is. Is it better to create different repositories each for the type T is; one repository that uses reflection to determine the type; or is there a better way using inheritance capabilities over/with generics?
