I'm working with visual studio 2008 developing software for windows CE 6.0, compact framework.I'm having this "strange?" trouble with isNumeric method. Is there another better way to do this job? Why is getting me an exception? (two in facts...both of type FormatException)

I have a theory that the CLR garbage collection mechanism means that I can get away with circular references in my object hierarchy without creating deadlocks for teardown and garbage collection. Is this a safe assumption to make? (Target language VB.NET)

Well i got a page that sends emails and everything runs fine in the developer web server but when i publish to a IIS Server i get a FormatException when i try to send the mail.... ex.Message = "the specified string is not in the form required for an e-mail address."
the email is in this sample someone@gmail.com
Im using the "SmtpClient" and the "MailMessage" classes to send mails..
And the server runs windows server 2003
Edit: Im using same smtp settings on the Dev Webserver as im doing in IIS.
I use the expression below to evaluate for a certain value, '91'. If however, the value at that array position is '0B' a System.FormatException is thrown. How do I alter the evaluation so this exception won't be thrown?

So I am trying to evaluate 3 conditions in an if statement. Its not working how I would assume it should. I basically want to do this:vb.net If PGN = &HEF007E And PGNData(0) = &H58 And (PGNData(1) And &H40) = &H40 Then IgnOn = True Else IgnOn = False If I write it in that manner it gives inconsistent results. All of the sudden, no matter what kind of entry is put in txtProductID (including plain numbers), it fails! Is there reason for me to be going crazy over this?

I've found that when the function receives the value 603E43 IsNumeric evaluates to True for some reason and then bombs on the conversion. Why would IsNumeric be true in this case?

Whenever I run the program and I enter text into the label the program crashes. When I type in a negative number the message box works. A number like -45 worked and a message show appeared, whilst a string like 'bob made the program crashed.
When was isnumeric considered legacy code? I guess all that i have learned from my college class last semister is legacy.

how to get around this exception, particularly when I'm databinding a number field to a number property, and there should be no string conversion happening. (To further complicate things, I'm using a similar technique for another control where I databind a DateTime field to a nullable DateTime property, and that control works just fine.)

I doing some maintenance work on a vb .net web app and receive a system.formatexception input string was not in a correct format error after I update a row from a GridView control. The database update returns fine and I've stepped through the code and it never throws an error but when execution finishes and returns to the browser I get the following. For example, how would one evaluate the expression "(1+2)*(3+4)"?I've looked all over and it seems that people are writing their own parsers. There has to be a better way. After all these years, VB.Net must have something that will take an expression and evaluate it.

Following a recomendation from an expert, I removed the Microsoft.VisualBasic Reference from my project in order to "clean" the code and use only .NET. Almost anything I have been able to fix except I cant find the equivalent of IsNumeric or IsDate functions.

I need to convert these strings to double values at some point (Note that these strings may contain error messages other than numbers). So I first check if these strings are numbers, and if yes, then convert them to double. Isnumeric works for my first customized string format. But I found that is numeric cannot recognize percentage strings. I wonder why isnumeric understands () but cannot understand %. And what is the better way to convert "(100.00)" and "50%" to doubles other than Cdbl?

I had a strange error in a VB6 app this morning and it all stems from the fact that IsNumeric is not working as I expected. To me this seems like a bug.
This code displays 4.15877E+62 in a message box:

I am guessing that the runtime engine is incorrectly thinking that the D is in fact an E? I think this is a bug though as the exact same code in VB.NET outputs not numeric Is this a known issue with IsNumeric?
On all my assignments I am asked to make sure the data is valid - only numeric, no empty strings. And I keep wondering which is the best to use IsNumeric or TryParse. When I try both on coding they seem to do the same thing, and I don't seem to find my answer online. Any ideas of why to use one over the other.

Which is used to plot bearings. The user inputs a bearing of 0-360 degrees. It works fine if a user say types in "abc" or "/" i.e. anything that isn't numeric. But if a user types in "90/" then it allows it. When the bearing is plotted the keypress is surpressed so the user cant then go back an edit. Is there a quick way to amend the code to allow for this?
My DGV's last visible column in a boolean. I am needing to go through each row and determine if the value of dgv item bFlag is true then turn the row back ground red. Here is my start of it. It appears to be only making one loop then giving the message box.

I have a application that allows the user to enter a series of nested filtering commands. E.g "Name starts with x or ((Description contains y or Property1 is On) and Property2 > 100)"
I can preprocess this and distill it down to a string in the form of an expression of True and False's ie, To "True or ((False or True) and False)" Is there a simple way to have this final expression evaluated without having to write a complex evaluator myself?
I have seen a method of evaluating this by compiling a dummy function at runtime but as I need to process this against possibly thousands of records that solution is too slow.
BTW These are not all fields in a database so I cannot use Queries or SQL etc.
I store a formula in the database such as the following:GrossIncome+(Overtime/0.5)-Deductions=BasicNetIncome
I am able to substitute the string representations with actually values entered, thus:1000+(150*0.5)-100=BasicNetIncome
Then I remove the '=BasicNetIncome', thus:
1000+(150*0.5)-100
How can evaluate the above equation to return a result:

I'm working on a project where I need to evaluate some formulas in VB.NET. I've been using the MS Script Control to evaluate some of the simple logical/mathematical formulasHowever, I'm now faced with dealing with string expressions that set variables in my program to certain values. So, for example, let's say I've got the following:

Is there a method that allows me to evaluate a mathematical expression in a string? Example (Not actual Code):

Update: Nevermind, I found a way around it by using DataTable.Compute.
