.net - Using Action(Of T) Over A Custom Delegate Syntax For Readability?

Jan 7, 2011

Since .net 4.0, is the new ettiquette to use syntax such as:

Private Sub Main()
MyMethod(AddressOf AnAction)
End Sub
Private Sub MyMethod(ByVal toDo As Action(Of String, Integer, Boolean))
toDo.Invoke("Tom", 1, True)
End Sub
Private Sub AnAction(ByVal p1 As String, ByVal p2 As Integer, ByVal p3 As Boolean)
End Sub

[Code]...

This goes the same with Tuples/Func too. It is nice to write but feels a bit sloppy in places. Why would anyone want Tuple(Of T, T2, T3, T4) over a nice class type? My actual piece of code has these nested, so it passes the Action along in a chain of methods.

Sorry for the VB example, AddressOf is just VBs way of saying new Action(AnAction). Also I just wrote this into the browser so it might not compile either. How to people feel about reading and using these compiler generic actions as opposed to proper special entities crafted for their exact requirements in the solution?

.net - Create And Pass Custom Function As A Delegate?

Aug 5, 2009

I have a function Process(data, f) where data is a normal parameter and f is a function needed to process the data (passed as a delegate to Process)

The signature of f is int f(a,b,c), with a, b, c supplied by Process when it calls the delegate.

Up until here, standard delegate usage.

Now, I have a special but common case where I would like to call Process with a constant f function. So I would like to write SimpleProcess(data, k) so that the caller does not need to create a delegate in this case, just pass the constant k (the only information needed).

So I need to dynamically create a constant function, g(a,b,c) which takes 3 parameters (which are ignored) and always returns k. This has to be done within the SimpleProcess function, so that I can then simply call Process(data, g) from within that function, without the need to rewrite the whole Process function for this special case.

How To Get The Installation Directory In A Custom Action

Dec 9, 2010

I am using Visual Studio 2005. I have just figured out how to create a Custom Action during installation, but I can not figure out how to get data from the installer. Following is the simple test code that I am trying to use to call the directory that the user defines during installation, but the Path string is not returning anything.

Public Overrides Sub Install(ByVal stateSaver As System.Collections.IDictionary)

MyBase.Install(stateSaver)

Dim Path As String = MyBase.Context.Parameters("targetdir")

Dim AppConfigFile As String = Path & "FilesAppConfig.txt"

MsgBox("The target filepath is: " & AppConfigFile)

End Sub

I have tried many other things, such as...

Me.Context.parameters("targetdir")

stateSaver.item("targetdir")

And I entered /INSTALLDIR="[TARGETDIR]" in the custom action data property.

VS 2008 Custom Uninstall Action Not Executing?

May 26, 2009

I've created a program that creates a registry value when it is run, and when this program is uninstalled I need it to remove this registry value if it exists. So I wrote a little command line VB.NET program that simply checks for the reg value and removes it if it exists and I added this to the Uninstall section of the Custom Actions tab in the Visual Studio deployment project that I created for this app.

I know that the command line app works because if I run it myself manually it deletes the registry value, but when I uninstall my application it does not remove the registry value so obviously this command line app is not being executed.

Custom Action, Uninstallation Removes Added Registry Key?

Sep 12, 2009

I've made a small program that creates a registry item in the users run key (basically starts the program on bootup), my question is does anybody know how to remove the item from all the users of the computer when the program is uninstalled?.

I know that all the other users registry hives aren't loaded at anyone time and feel a custom action dll that runs on uninstall that iterates through the 'documents and settings' folder loading the hives one at a time and removes the registry key.

Multicast Delegate: Represents A Multicast Delegate; That Is, A Delegate That Can Have More Than One Element In Its Invocation List?

Jan 30, 2010

from the documentation we have this: Multicast Delegate: Represents a multicast delegate; that is, a delegate that can have more than one element in its invocation list.

so am i right to say that Multicast delegate is no different from a normal delegate other than the fact that it has arguments. so System.Action is a 'normal' delegate whereas System.Action(T)(Byval obj as T) is a multicast delegate?

.net - Programming Readability With Strings?

Jun 22, 2011

While working on a project I have come across a way of not having to check if a string isnull or empty

dim sb as new stringbuilder
dim bob as string
sb.append((bob & string.empty).padLeft(10, " "))

Here, bob is not instantiated but doesn't throw a null reference error. In situations like this, is it more readable to do the above code or the below code?

if string.isnullorempty(bob) then
sb.append(string.empty.padleft(10, " ")
else
sb.append(bob.padleft(10," "))
endif

I personally think method #1 is more readable and maintainable.

Possible To Split Up File For Readability?

Oct 29, 2010

I'm writing a program in Visual Basic 2010. It's a HMI (Human-Machine Interface) and therefore has a whole whack of buttons that just send commands to other devices. As a result, there are a huge pile of event handlers for clicking buttons that can't really be broken down into modules (unless my understanding of modules is wrong). Essentially, I'd like to be able to move all the event handlers, for, say, button presses to a different file. Can this be done or is it important that they stay in "MainWindow.xaml.vb"? (All my buttons reside in one fullscreen window, some are hidden by tabs).

Change Byte() To Structs For Readability And Convert Struct To Byte Stream For Socket Send()

Dec 8, 2009

I just converted the following code from c# to vb.net. It is functional and works correctly with my company's firmware/devices. My next challenge. Previous serialport code used much more readable structs which where then converted (after building a packet) into byte() automatically as part of the serialport encoding. (this is my understanding)How could I

1. morph byte arrays 'ToSocket' and 'ToMTP' below into structs and

2. convert into byte array for Socket.BeginSend(byte(),.....) to stream out to remote devices?

Multithreading - Delegate Within A Delegate?

Mar 23, 2010

I am trying to write a VB.NET alternative to a C# anonymous function.I wish to call Threading.SynchronizationContext.Current.Send which expects a delegate of type Threading.SendOrPostCallback to be passed to it. The background is here, but because I wish to both pass in a string to MessageBox.Show and also capture the DialogResult I need to define another delegate within. I am struggling with the VB.NET syntax, both from the traditional delegate style, and lambda functions. My go at the traditional syntax is below, but I have gut feeling it should be much simpler than this:

Private Sub CollectMesssageBoxResultFromUserAsDelegate(ByVal messageToShow As String, ByRef wasCanceled As Boolean)
wasCanceled = False

Why Use A Delegate

Apr 22, 2009

While reading this threadthe code sample there came from MSDN, which was used to demonstrate the use of a delegate. I know what Delegates are. And I know how they work when it comes to things like crossing threads and even sinks.... how ever, the sample given is a simplecontrived example, and I'm wondering why/when would I use a delegate in this situation? Or in any situation? In my head, it seems it would have been easier/cleaner to call the function pointed to directly...
