VS 2008 Reading A Custom File Format?

Oct 20, 2009

The file format has already been explained to me, and I can easily view it in notepad to understand it. It's basically a text file with a fancy extension and what not. The only problem is that I need to read it and pull a certain span of data from it.Here's the basic format:

8200
3251
1

[code].....

This is the first 10 lines, which is useless data for me. However, right after the first 10 lines, is a span of an unknown quantity of lines that I do need that are formatted like so:grassC:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesHalo Custom itiondatalevelsestlood_creekitmapslood_creek groundThe first line is the name of a bitmap assigned to the ID, while the second line is the path to the bitmap. Finally, after the unknown span of lines, there are two lines that go in this order:01Which I can safely assume at this point that the list no longer needs to be read. What I need to do is be able to open this file, skip over the first 10 lines which are completely useless, and then pull out the unknown gap of lines, and then stop reading when the line is '0', or at the end of the list.

.net - Using Action(Of T) Over A Custom Delegate Syntax For Readability?

Jan 7, 2011

Since .net 4.0, is the new ettiquette to use syntax such as:

Private Sub Main()
MyMethod(AddressOf AnAction)
End Sub
Private Sub MyMethod(ByVal toDo As Action(Of String, Integer, Boolean))
toDo.Invoke("Tom", 1, True)
End Sub
Private Sub AnAction(ByVal p1 As String, ByVal p2 As Integer, ByVal p3 As Boolean)
End Sub

[Code]...

This goes the same with Tuples/Func too. It is nice to write but feels a bit sloppy in places. Why would anyone want Tuple(Of T, T2, T3, T4) over a nice class type? My actual piece of code has these nested, so it passes the Action along in a chain of methods.

Sorry for the VB example, AddressOf is just VBs way of saying new Action(AnAction). Also I just wrote this into the browser so it might not compile either. How to people feel about reading and using these compiler generic actions as opposed to proper special entities crafted for their exact requirements in the solution?

Reading Custom Properties From An Access File?

Oct 6, 2009

I'm trying to build an app that will read custom properties set in an accdb file. Basically, I'm trying to build a Front End updater (Yes I know there are others already built, but they don't work the way I want). The Custom properties are initially set manually by pressing the Office button, going to Manage, then Database Properties and selecting the Custom tab.

I've got most of the code set up, but my sticking point is how to read the custom properties.

Following is the function I use within Access VBA to get the properties, but obviously this is not going to work in VB.Net.

[Code].....

I think I need to replace one or more of the 4 lines after the On Error (yes I know I need to change the Error trapping too). I'm guessing I need to connect to the database file (an accdb, btw) and then go from there to define the container and documents collections.

Append - Appending Adding Annd Reading Regedit With Custom Buttons

Jun 9, 2011

I have 26 buttons on my form (each a letter of the alphabet) i want to press a button lets say Z and that it then changes the relevant registry key value of 0 to 1 representing the button has already been clicked (these a-z buttons are to be compared with on/ off switches). This way if I start my program up again the values in the regedit will "memorise" wich buttons were turned on and wich were turned off in our previous program session.

Ultimately the buttons turned off should always appear as red until switched onagain

Dose anybody know how to achive this?

VS 2008 .net And Sql 2005 Syntax?

Feb 12, 2010

I am using vb.net 2008 and sql 2005. I am writing a program to translate data from one database to another. Basically I have two dataGridViews, the original data is automatically populated to the first and on clicking the "Translate" button the second dataGridView is filled with the translated information. I am having trouble with the syntax of passing a value from the original dataGridView to SQL and returning the 'id' of the translated data table. For instance, the original has colors stored as "Blue" "Green" etc The new tables now have unique ID's with the color name as attributes. I need to basically be able to pass dgvOriginal.rows(i).cells("color").value to a stored procedure and get the "id" field of that color. Here is what I have so far.

VS 2008 Syntax Clarification If Not (x And Y) =?

Sep 9, 2009

I would need some clarification on a syntax : could someone tell me why some people in their code use the following :

If Not (xxx And yyy) = 0 Then
'code
End if

instead of

If xxx = true Then
'code
End if

As an exemple : In a code I use for a listview Item Ownerdraw, it sure works like this :

If Not (e.State And ListViewItemStates.Selected) = 0 Then
' draw the listview item code
End If

but not like this :

If e.State = ListViewItemStates.Selected Then
'
End If

When I list the INSERT statment I get this

INSERT INTO InventoryUpdLog ( PkgId, CompName, UpdDate, Count )

looks ok to me and if I paste it into a query in Access it works fine.

I am trying to read through some code and it would be helpful if the editor in VS 2008 would highlight the If statement by using the cursor and double clicking the End If statement (or something like that).

I believe I could do something like this in Java using Eclipse - it was very good at highlighting a code block by clicking next to one of the curly braces.

VS 2008 - Dynamic Radio Buttons & Syntax Errors

Here is what I have so far, but it has a Syntax Error.

rbGenericName & RndNum & .Text = m_dtDrugs.Rows(DrugNum) ("GenericName").ToString()I know that the above code is not correct, I am just trying to represent what I am trying to accomplish. I already have a random number generator in place, I am just looking for the correct syntax.

VS 2008 General Syntax Question: Hiding Properties?

Apr 21, 2011

I have a (pretty large, 1000 lines or so) class with a lot of properties, both regular, overridden and overloadd properties. I currently add this in front of the property to hide it from the designer:<Browsable(False), DesignerSerializationVisibility(DesignerSerializationVisibility.Hidden)>This is all great, but it adds quite some lines to my project. How can I specify, for my class or project, that it should add the above settings to all?Or even better: set the above settings for a block of code instead of a single property.
