Apr 15, 2010I have a database running on SQL server primary key is all set, my question is i dont want to allow duplicates in the primary key, i want everything to be uniqure. The database already has information in it, is there a away to set it so when i add a new row through the table adapter that it will recognise the last primary key value and increment it by +1?

A form takes a textBox entry as a PIN number and matches it to a card number in the same table which is the primary key. The card number is in a comboBox.Selected Item. I have used a dataset to fill the comboBox as the form loads. I have tried for days and got nowhere.

Jul 20, 2009I am using a number of tables on my application and two of which have a foreign key constraint I have set between them. When I change the account number on the main table via a combo box all of the relevant information for that table on the form is updated accordingly. However, the child table which has a foreign key reference to the Account Number of the main table is not updated when the acocunt number is changed. I have set the update to cascade in the references but still am having issues.

VB 2010 Concurrency - Updating Entry In One Instance
Mar 29, 2012I am writing a program that makes use of SQL databases using MSSQL Express 2008. I've just written code that updates data in the DB, but I noticed when I update an entry in one instance of the program, and then try to update the same entry in a second instance of the program it goes through. What I want is concurrency so if the entry is different from the original, updating is not allowed.

Jul 25, 2011I have a oracle database. I use the OracleDataAdapter(Oracle.DataAccess.dll) for select, update, insert, delete operations. I don't set any (table) locks on my own(I only start a transaction). I have a oracle table named "test" with the entry "test1".
Now my question: Can Person A read the entry "test1" while Person B is updating/deleting the entry at the exact same time? What happens in the worst case? An old match/empty match or can it cause any kind of exception/error(e.g. "TableLocked-Exception")?

Sep 8, 2009i am pulling together a cash register that will allow both bar code product entry and manual key entry.imagine if you have a tin of beans in front of you, in a small corner shop they would probably type "47" and then hit "Produce". Fairly straight forward as I have the button Produce to act upon my code and update my salestrans.mdb but,if you scan the bar code I want the same form to handle both 'real' actions, (i assume that keyboard emulation barcode scanner includes "ENTER" after providing 13 digits)....
Q. in perhaps a long winded way i want to know how to kick off an event based on the "ENTER" key being activiated by the barcode scanner)?i do not want to have to hit any buttons if i am scanning bar codes.

1. Does bar code reader generate a keydown (or keypress) event for each of the digits of the entry? For example, if the barcode read: 1234567890, does that mean that there will be 10 keydown (or keypress) events for that single barcode that was read?
2. I have read from the posts that the best way to differentiating keyboard vs bar code input is to analyse the time between keystroke (for less than certain number of milliseconds).

Updating Child Collection Of POCO (adding/updating/deleting) In Entity Framework 4.1?
Jan 25, 2012I have a webpage with a form that is used to edit some object. This object contains a Collection of other objects defined like this: Public Overridable Property Employees As List(Of Employee)
On a form I can delete an employee, add a new one or modify existing one. When I click save new values are sent to the server. On a server I check if the user exists. If exists then I modify its values, if it does not exist then I add it. All employees that exist on the server and were not sent are marked as deleted (State changed to EntityState.Deleted). I try to use the following code (dbCollection = database entities, newCollection = collection sent from the form):

This code does not work, because changing to EntityState.Deleted removes the object from collection, and for each loop breaks, since the collection is modified...I know that I can overcome this problem by using a for loop or adding objects to delete to some other list first, but I hope maybe there is a pattern that would make my code nicer.

Sep 4, 2009I have a web site where users enter company names to use in the rest of the app. However, recently I've noticed that similar duplicates are appearing, e.g. someone will enter EastTec Solicitors another will enter EastTec Solicitors Ltd someone else will enter EastTec Solictors (missed the i out in Solicitors), when there should only be one entry of EastTec Solicitors. What is the best way of checking the database for entries similar to what they have entered? How would you about checking for spelling mistakes as well like the Solicitors one?
