.net - Override The Auto-indentation Of Comments In .NET/VS2008?
Nov 10, 2009
Is it possible to override the auto-indentation of comments in VB.NET (Using visual studio 2008)? the comment above the second Case Statement in the code below for context.The IDE auto-indents the comment beyond the following Case Statement. I would like to override this behavior and bring it in line with the C in Case that follows.

I've changed my settings in Tools | Options | Text Editor, for All Languages, Basic, and C#, to having Block indenting, and 'Keep tabs'. I've also tried this with Smart indenting too. Now, although once I start editing a file, its auto indentation is done with tabs, when I create a new web form in my ASP.net website, VS2008 insists on creating the initial code with space indentation. So for example, I'll get an aspx.vb file for my new page like so:
Partial Class Admin_Index
Inherits System.Web.UI.Page
End Class
Note that the 'Inherits' line is SPACE-indented, even though I have the text editor settings set to keep tabs. Is there any way I can make the default created files indented with tabs, not spaces? Or is VS just too stubborn? :-)
I know this, but I have a software team that find it irritating as we have an SVN hook that prevents checkins if there's any space-indentation. It would be very useful if any newly-created files have tab indentation from the start, rather than us having to change it every time.

We have a combo box where users enter a part number. Auto-complete is on and we're in SuggestAppend mode with the source set as ListItems. The part number is in a format something like this:-
XX XX-XXX
2 chars, a space, 2 chars, a hyphen, 3 chars. The format does change slightly for different types of parts but the combination of characters (ignoring the spaces and hyphens) is always unique. The format is just a presentation issue but, for business/political reasons, we cannot 'flatten' it to just the characters.
Our users would like to be able to just type the characters and have the auto-complete work. However, they still want the display to show the spaces and hyphens, both in the list and in the 'textbox' part of the combo when they make a selection. So the list might look like:-
AB KN-TRD
AB KN-TTN
AB PR-TRD
[code]....
the user types AB, the list now looks like:-
AB KN-TRD
AB KN-TTN
AB PR-TRD
AB PR-TTN
Now the user types K (nb, they have not typed a space), the list now looks like:-
AB KN-TRD
AB KN-TTN
At this point it's acceptable for the textbox to show ABK (no space) but as soon as the the user makes a selection the textbox needs to contain the spaces and hyphens from the part number selected.My hunch is that there must be some sort of comparator function in the combobox I can override but I'm struggling to find the details as to how.

I am working on an ASP.NET project where I use VB.NET within Visual Studio 2010. Some of the other developers on the project are using Visual Studio 2008. We all check our code into single SVN repository. I would like to start using Auto-Implemented Properties within VB.NET ...
Property FirstName as String
instead of ...
Private FirstName as String
[code].....
My concern is that this could mess up things for those using VS2008. What would happen if someone using VS2008 needed to modify my class that made use of Auto-Implemented Properties? I am assuming that since everything compiles down to IL code then there would be no issue in binary compatibility. Though a problem would arise when editing source.

I've noticed that in C# XML comments and code comments can have different colors by changing the settings in Tools > Options > Environment > Fonts and Colors > Display Items:
- Comment: controls code comments XML comment: controls XML comments
This works well in C# <summary>This XML comment is green</summary>

I am having a problem editing VB.NET .aspx pages in Visual Studio 2008. If I edit a line that is flush against the left margin, Studio automatically indents it 4 spaces, and there is no way to undo it! I am forced to save the file with that 1 line I edited indented differently than all the other lines!
Edit: How do I turn this off?

This is driving me round the bend. I'm a long time VB.NET forms developer, quite new to ASP.NET and completely new to MVC. I'm creating vbhtml pages that use the VB.NET razor syntax, and I seem to be constantly fighting against the UI which is trying to indent my code incorrectly. Take the following example, based on the template page for a new Razor view:
@Code
Layout = Nothing
End Code

I do not understand vb comments. I read that it is possible to give a hint in the code completion box when someone (or myself?) is using my code. But I do not find something in visual studio.

I have been using the method summary XML Comments at the top of my procedures lately and am wondering if there are any logical or good practices related to this.I never put anything in the remarks because I put the description of the method in the summary tag. What belongs in the summary and what belongs in remarks?I seldom put anything in the returns tag because it seems like it would be redundant as I usually explain what is being returned in the summary. Should I simply keep the type of object returned in the returns tag?

Is there a way to add comments to an array initialization? For example:
Dim test As UShort() = { _
1, _
2, _
3, _
4 _
}
I'd like to add a comment on each line, but the obvious syntaxes fail (for obvious reasons)
1, 'test _
1 'test, _
So, am I out of luck?

When I'm writing comments in my code, I often forget to add the initial space after the comment identifier.
'this is a comment
when really it is supposed to be
' this is a comment
I realize this is quite trivial, and you could simply say "just add the damn space you idiot", but I'd really like to automate this so that I just don't have to worry about it. add the comment space?note I do realize that a catch all string replace or regex replace could screw up other things ... IE:
Dim something As String = "I'm a nerd"
would actually come out
Dim something As String = "I' m a nerd"
if it's only on a line by it's self and is not followed by a second single quote... IE: '' would not trigger the replacement.

I am completely Goggled out on this one. We currently have a datalist consisting of rows of data for our company. What I need to do is to add a link into the individual cells of a particular column called candidate profile. The link will be View Notes. When that link is clicked, I would like to have a new row expand right below the existing row to allow the additions of comments in the empty row. When the user comes to the page and there are existing comments for the row of data, have it expanded and give the user the ability to expand, or close the comments as they see fit. I also need to figure out the best way to allow the user to enter in the comments as well.

I make pretty extensive use of XML Comments in Visual Studio, but I'm discovering that some project types either don't appear to support them or else have default project settings preventing them from working properly. For example, I position the cursor immediately over a Class, Variable, or Sub declaration and I type ''' - usually this prompts Visual Studio to autofill a whole XML comment block for me, but in a recent Class Library project with COM enabled, this does nothing at all.

One of the Projects in my VB.NET Solution seemed unwilling to let me write XML Documentation in my code. When tapping ''' on the line directly above a method declaration, nothing would happen. The project consisted of modules and classes only(no forms), so I initially thought that had something to do with it.
Later I found that under project properties and the Compile tab, the "Generate XML documentation file" checkbox was left unchecked. Checking this instantly allowed me to place the comments normally. After doing some testing, I also found that Creating an Empty project leaves the checkbox unchecked, while creating a Windows Application automatically checks it.
