Make Code Indentation Behave Correctly In Vbhtml Razor Files?
Nov 25, 2011
This is driving me round the bend. I'm a long time VB.NET forms developer, quite new to ASP.NET and completely new to MVC. I'm creating vbhtml pages that use the VB.NET razor syntax, and I seem to be constantly fighting against the UI which is trying to indent my code incorrectly. Take the following example, based on the template page for a new Razor view:
@Code
Layout = Nothing
End Code

I want to use the Linkshare helper in the Microsoft.Web.Helpers dll. I added the reference to my project but if attempt to use it in the vbhtml file Visual studio underlines it with a blue squiggly and tells me it is inaccessible blah blah. I even added references to those webmatrix dlls as described here[url]...

Using MVC3 and Razor View engine, I created a VB.NET web application in VS 2010. This creates the default Account and Home Controller along with corresponding Action Views.Now if I open any vbhtml file I get the following error message in the Error List window.
Error 50 Syntax error. C:****MVC3AppVBViewsAccountLogOn.vbhtml MVC3AppVB

I've changed my settings in Tools | Options | Text Editor, for All Languages, Basic, and C#, to having Block indenting, and 'Keep tabs'. I've also tried this with Smart indenting too. Now, although once I start editing a file, its auto indentation is done with tabs, when I create a new web form in my ASP.net website, VS2008 insists on creating the initial code with space indentation. So for example, I'll get an aspx.vb file for my new page like so:
Partial Class Admin_Index
Inherits System.Web.UI.Page
End Class
Note that the 'Inherits' line is SPACE-indented, even though I have the text editor settings set to keep tabs. Is there any way I can make the default created files indented with tabs, not spaces? Or is VS just too stubborn? :-)
I know this, but I have a software team that find it irritating as we have an SVN hook that prevents checkins if there's any space-indentation. It would be very useful if any newly-created files have tab indentation from the start, rather than us having to change it every time.

I have created ~ 9,000 desktop.ini files, using VB code shown at

My goal was to assign an icon to each folder of a set of folders.My problem is that the created desktop.ini files seem to behave erratically: some folders display their assigned icon, some do not.I verified that all folders and assigned icons exist.

I am converting projects from C# to Visual Basic, and the namespaces in VB.NET behave in a weird way. There is some kind of hidden default namespace, and it's annoying. I want it to behave identical to C#, which works as expected - things go into the namespaces you create for them.
I've been getting around it usually with say
using MyClassLibrary;in C#, and in VB
Imports MyClassLibrary
Imports MyClassLibrary.MyClassLibrary
but it would be nice to have the functionality the same, and also logical.The other bigger problem is, I have a .tt file, and the C# project generates the code in a different namespace to the VB one.
Is there some solution to make both behave identically with regards to namespaces?

I have a very simple class that holds a few public properties - ID, Text, Colour, etc. and a Boolean called 'SelectedItem'. Just like the Checked property on RadioButtons, only one item can have its SelectedItem property set to True within a particular group. Note: there will be several separate groups (lists), each allowed to have only one item with SelectedItem = True.
My first thought was that I would probably just have to handle everything outside of the class, setting SelectedItem to False for every other item in a particular list when another item was selected. But that seems rather inelegant to me. So I've been trying to think of how this might be done within the class. For example: could I perhaps have a private string property called say "GroupName" - set in the New sub when adding a new instance of the class - and then use a private shared method to set every item's SelectedItem property to False, provided the item has the same GroupName as the newly selected item? I would have a go at doing this but I have no idea how to enumerate every instance of a class from within that class, or whether that's even possible. Is it? Or is there another (better) way to achieve my goal? Here is a cut-down version of what I've got so far:
Public Class ResourceItem
Public ID As Integer
Public Text As String[code]....
As can be seen: instead of instantiating a new ResourceItem and passing that as an argument to the manager's Add procedure, I'm simply passing the details of the new item and the procedure is creating the item from those. I don't know whether this is a good or bad idea - please advise - but I've done it because I couldn't figure out how to make the SelectedItem property only writeable by the manager, so I wanted to avoid having directly accessible objects that could have their SelectedItem property set to True without it deselecting all the other items in the same group. Of course that still leaves the possibility of setting a variable to one of the manager's list items and setting it from there, so I would still like to know how I could prevent that, if possible.
UPDATE: I didn't use the code above in the end, deciding instead to go with Cyborgx37's solution - which seems to work perfectly well for me despite the warnings about best practice. I also realised I would need to use the same class in another scenario where multiple items could be selected, so it was easy to add a Boolean property to the manager to enable that.

I have an issue with creating a VB program. I reference files on my computer that are displayed in a webbrowser in the program. The issue comes when I install the program on another computer because of the file path. The program is looking for the files on the computer I created the program on because of the file path, instead of looking for the files within the program resource files.
For example, I created the program on Computer A and referenced File "C:ComputerAMy DocumentsHelp.txt"
Once installed on Computer B, the program doesnt display the image because it's looking for "Computer A" in the file path.How do I correct my programming so that the files are universial and can be found on any computer the program is installed on?

I am having a problem editing VB.NET .aspx pages in Visual Studio 2008. If I edit a line that is flush against the left margin, Studio automatically indents it 4 spaces, and there is no way to undo it! I am forced to save the file with that 1 line I edited indented differently than all the other lines!
Edit: How do I turn this off?

I have a line of C# code and can't translate it correctly. 'myString' is a string and 'a' and 'k' are both UInt:a += (uint)(myString[k + 0] + (myString[k + 1] << 8) + (myString[k + 2] << 16) + (myString[k + 3] << 24)); Translators for VB suggest the following but I get "Operator '<<' is not defined for types 'Char' and 'Integer': a += CUInt(myString(k + 0) + (myString(k + 1) << 8) + (myString(k + 2) << 16) + (myString(k + 3) << 24))

I know that it is executing because I get a 1 returned when checking the number of rows affected but when I look on the DB the value is not updated - I have refreshed and still no update. Here is the code, taskgrp_template is type bit and taskgrp_id is type integer. Id is also set to the correct value, as the result of my tracepoint - results listed below code.
mycmd.CommandText = "UPDATE p2_taskgroups SET TASKGRP_template = 1 WHERE TASKGRP_ID =" & id
rowsChecked = mycmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
Tracepoint result: the value of id is 55 and the value of templateCheck is 14 the number of rows affected was 1

I recently revised a VB ListView and removed one column of data, and failed to spot an If ... Then reference to data in the removed column. The code runs without the 'impossible' SubItem query being detected in my W7-64 desktop IDE, but crashes in the compiled/ installed version. In my older XP-32 laptop however the code error is trapped as it should be. I have noticed occasionally that other minor code errors are not trapped in the W7-64 system - is that normal, or has my W7 IDE been damaged somehow? Should I delete and re-install VS 2010 in the W7 machine ... not a trivial task!

In order to multithread correctly, so that my UI gets updated and the background code functions correctly, I've been doing this:I have one sub that does the UI updating and checks for invocation: [code] However, I need to update the UI within the Class now. When I do that, my app is no longer responsive. I need to do all UI updating within the form class and all background code within my custom class.I just can't figure out how to determine at what part my class is at, to update the UI.The UI has a few labels and a picture box that needs updating. As it runs a new process, (about 8 in all) I need to update the picture box and labels with the appropriate information so that the user knows where the app is at.

The vb.net code is functioning correctly as it talks to a device through COM1 serial port.What I was hoping was the equivalent c# code is not creating the same string and as a result, the serial 'packet' is not correct. Check this illustration of my problem [URL]...
My goal is to eliminate the addition of the extra characters '/0' and '/b' that what I hoped was the c# equivalent to the correctly functioning vb.net code. It just occurred to me I should change the code to employ Stringbuilder. The 'packetbuilder' method/function builds a string and keeps concatenating things to itself.

I am using the follwoing code to generate Menustrip at runtime.
Dim dgv1 As DataGridView
dgv1 = Me.MenuDataGridView
ReadMenuInGridView(dgv1)
Dim MItems As New SortedList(Of String, ToolStripMenuItem)
For Each dgr As DataGridViewRow In dgv1.Rows
[Code] .....
Where the sub "ReadMenuInGridView" passes the DGV by reference and populates it with the menu item from the database. My question is,, the program as it is in the form listed above works fine (where I have a DGV "MenuDataGridView" created at design time), however, if I want to make it 100% dynamic and use a DGV created at run time I will not get the menu? Actually the program will not get in to the For loop?
Simply to do that we can replace the first 2 statement with:
Dim dgv1 As New DataGridView
'dgv1 = Me.MenuDataGridView

I've placed a break point at the 'private sub' line, and the code is not breaking. What am I doing wrong?

This questions is for VBers, it's irrelevant in C#.
In VB, when you create a module, all it's fucntions and members are available in the scope without need to type the module name, just like all the VB functions (Rnd, Mid, IIf etc.).
I want to create a module but I should have to explicitly write it's name to access it's members, i.e. it shouldn't be loaded to the scope like a namespace.
Update
For example, I have a Module of extension methods, I don't want all it's members to show up on the scope and in the intellisense.
I want it to be available only by instance.ExtensionMethod().

If you create new projects in C# and VB.NET, then go directly in the Immediate Window and type this:
? 567 / 1000
C# will return 0, while VB.NET will return 0.567.To get the same result in C#, you need to type
? 567 / 1000.0
Why is there this difference? Why does C# require the explicit decimal point after 1000?
