What Event To Use When Loading Initial Data
May 23, 2011
I'm writing a forms application. I'm adding a piece that allows you to double click on a row of a datagridview control to open a new form with more details. These additional details are pulled from a database, which takes a bit of time to finish.If I run the DB query from the form's load event, the form doesn't show up until everything in the load event has completed, which can take several seconds.I want the form to show up instantly when you double click, and all of the fields to be populated once the data is ready.Is there an event I should be using other than Load?

As it stands, when I click a button to load the data the application lags and looks as though it has locked up although it has not. There are a lot (10,000) of records to load in some cases.
I thought I could just change my status strip text to dispay "Loading database" while it's loading.
So, I raise an event (dbloading) in the "load db" button.click event before calling the procedure to load the data. When that event is raised, I change the status strip text.... but it does not work.
Here's my
Private Sub btnLoad_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnLoad.Click
jnATM = Me.atmJobNum
[Code]....

I'm creating a Windows Console application written in VB.NET and I have a few processes that need to be called only once during the lifetime of the application. If it was an ASP.NET application, I put these in the Appliction_Start method of the Global.asax.vb file. Since there isn't a Global. asax. vb for Console applications, is there an event I could handle that allows me to call my functions before Main is called?

what's the best way to stop a form from displaying in its Load event.I initialise a form using the following code:
Dim MyForm as new MyCustomForm
In the Load event of MyCustomForm, I ask the user to select a folder and use that to populate a listbox on the form.folder.If the user presses Cancel instead of selecting a folder, I don't want to display the form. Right now, I just call Me.Close in the Load event, but that still causes the form to briefly appear and disappear in the background. Also do I need to call Me.Dispose?

Why do Me.Hide() And me.visible do nothing under form loading event? Now the obvious answer to me was because how could you call a form to hide if it has not loaded. Make's sense to me. So i checked the documentation to see what options i had. If the form isn't loaded when the Hide method is invoked, the Hide method loads the form but doesn't display it. Interesting. So from what i gather here me.hide should still hide the form. Or have i misinterpreted the documentation? Because the form does still display. Neither also work under Public Sub New().
The only solution i found was under sub new was to change the forms opacity to nothing. Which works fine. But after reading the documentation on Opacity i am still left with another question regarding "Visible vs Hide Vs Opacity" Calling me.hide makes the forms visible property false, Calling opacity set to Nothing makes the form in visible. Both these methods do the required task but does one take up more memory or should be favored over the other? Just because some thing work's i have learned it is not always necessarily the best way to do something.

I tried to make a menu for my game, but when I placed the code into the form loading event, it wouldn't show. Then I placed a button and moved the code into the button click event and it worked. Thus, I know the code shouldn't be wrong. How can you make the graphics( as in lines, rectangle,etc) show up when it starts up?

I have a Visual Basic Program that, when I enter data into a textbox, uses LEAVE events to update it. However, it will not update until I go to another textbox or press a button or other similar control.This also happens when using the LOST FOCUS event.How can I make the textbox update (be it doing a financial recalculation or some other custom function) happen when the user clicks/tabs out of the textbox and NOT having to click on a button or into another textbox?Do you recommend having a separate button for performing the custom functions?

Let's say I have a table which contains student details. (Student Code, Name, DOB, Sex, Address, Contact No) and I have a grid which shows ONLY the student code and the name.

I have an xml file called "QuotesxmlDoc", in my program I have written code for a search screen that searches the xml file for titles or keywords in quotes saved and the information is then shown in a datagridview, see the code below:
Private Sub btnSearchQoutes_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSearchQoutes.Click
Dim xmlnav As XPathNavigator
[Code].....
On the main screen of the program, I want to show all the saved quotes from the xml file in a datagridview, I just need to show the date, category, author, title of the quotes, I also need the datagridview to refresh everytime a new quote is saved.

Try something along these lines:
TextBox1.Text=(dt1.rows(DataGrid1.CurrentRowIndex).item(0).tostring)
where dt1 is the datatable you're using as the data source and you want the data from the first column of the grid to be shown in the text box.
dp.SyntaxHighlighter.ClipboardSwf = '/dp.SyntaxHighlighter/Scripts/clipboard.swf'
dp.SyntaxHighlighter.HighlightAll('381571b4631840c6b8a8abfe5b54ed97')

RichTextBox1.LoadFile("c:pic.jpg", RichTextBoxStreamType.PlainText)It seems like it loads the data correctly, but the data is all wrong. I know this because when I use a packer sniffer, the data of the file that I sent is different when I sent the file manually.ou can also try RichTextBox1.SaveFile("c:pic.jpg", RichTextBoxStreamType.PlainText) after the picture of the data has been loaded and the picture becomes corrupted (won't show any picture anymore)

Our application is using VBSQL.OCX on Sql server 2000 to create temporary tables and load pipe delimited data from a text file with predefined format into the tables. It is failing intermittently doing this. 99% times it works perfectly. But on occasions it does fail with error. Once the process is rerun with the same input file it runs successfully.Basically the architecture is of Store/Head Office where there are around 200 remote stores sending set of data files to the Head Office. At HO our application sequentially processes each store which has all the set of files received, creates a corresponding table, loads the data from the file into the table and moves onto the next store.If it is for some reason not able to load the file for a store, it gives a failure message and continues with next store.Error which the OCX throws is "Attempt to convert data stopped by syntax error in source field"
