How do I disable the background compiler for Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2008?

I am just wondering how I can add Direct X references to Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2. I cant find them in the .NET reference list, or the reference list, or anywhere. I downloaded the Direct X SDK for August 2009, but I can not add the .dll files to the reference list. Is there anything I can do to add them? I need the references for programming reasons.

when the user clicks on the add button another form launches, which enables the user to add student info such as name, address, course, start date and end date, this information is then written to class when the ok button on that form is clicked, and then displays the data on the initial form in data grid. the user can add multiple entries and they are all displayed on the intial form and a the data grid is populatedwhen any of the rows in the displayed grid is selected, and the update button is clicked then the same form launches as the previous one and but this time its in the update mode and pre populates the form with the inital values.

I am now asked to create a .net application and I'm trying to create a "Hello World" starter app. I opened my Visual Studio, click File-New Project and all I see is Business Intelligence Projects and Other Project Types. My step-by-step guide says choose Visual Basic, Windows Forms Application. But I can't see it as an option.

I'm currently using merge fields, and the code below to fill specific fields in a Word Document, but now I've run into a situation where I need tabular data pushed to MS Word. I'm trying to set up Route mapping tests using MVC Contrib as described in Test ASP.NET MVC routes using MVC Contrib .The tests compile and execute, but they always fail with the message "The URL did not match any route."I set up another test to try to get an idea of what the problem is:

It would work, but it doesn't same error. Now I know the simple solution is to call my methods different things, but i don't want to do this. I was also thinking of creating an attribute to prefix the ID method, to check for ID being there, and if it isn't dont allow that method, but I can't get this to work either.
I'm creating an API for a website. I'm using ASP.Net MVC 3 and I'm trying to create routes that support an optional .format parameter. So the client app could request /user/post.json, /user/posts.xml or just /users/posts I was able to make the .json or .xml ending url's work using the following route:

But I couldn't make the url without the .format parameter (/user/posts) work alongside.
I have a project written in MVC2 and VB.NET. I use a lot of htmlhelper extension methods,and I have them all in a public module. They work just fine, and I can compile and run my project. My project has the need to build consistent urls similar to the ones here on stackoverflow. I know how I "can" do it by running the string through multiple filters, but I'm wondering if I can do it all with a single method.Basically I want to remove all special characters, and replace them with dashes BUT if there are multiple dashes in a row, I need them to be a single dash. I'm trying to just get a VB.net app to be able to execute a lua script in a external file, and be able to add some functions to lua too, To do this I have this code:

But it errors on the register function, saying "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." Do you know of a example VB.net project that uses lua? Or know how to fix this?
