View 1 RepliesI am using the book: Programming with Microsoft Visual Basic 2005: An Object Oriented Approach and have a question. It says for instance: "In Visual Studio, open the solution file of the same name appearing in the folder named Chapter.09Chapter09ApplicationLessonPreview." Where in the world do I find this file? Is this something I have to create myself or is it already done and I just don't know where to look.
View 2 RepliesI need to read a Visual Studio Solution file (.SLN files) to figure out which projects belong to this solution.By opening a SLN file in notepad, one can see that the projects are stored like this:
Microsoft Visual Studio Solution File, Format Version 11.00
# Visual Studio 2010
Project("{FAE04EC0-301F-11D3-BF4B-00C04F79EFBC}") = "RadioGadget", "RadioGadgetRadioGadget.csproj", "{AE664C6C-000B-44D9-BAD8-0200D6ABE90D}"
[code].....
excluding the ... part obviously (which is just some guid I don't care about). Then I need it to match the rest too, and more importantly, I only need it to return the filename that I've underlined in the example. When I simply use 'm.Value' as I am now I think I will get the entire matched string back, right? That gets me nowhere as I'd still need to parse the filename out of that manually... Bit pointless to use regex then...
I have to compile projects which was compiled in Visual Studio 6 in Visual Studio 2005. When i compiled i got a set of same error. I opened the project for VS6 by selecting File->open->project/solution and tried to build a solution by Build option but i am getting the following error.

I want to be able to create a tree view that can get its nodes form a directory on a computer. In the code below, I am able to get all of the files into a list, but I cannot get the folder correct. What I mean is in your user directory, you have sub directorys such as, Documents, Music, and Pictures. When you run this code, it displays them each as thier own node, not nested. I hope this makes sense.

Changed the code to the way spinion told me to. When I run this code I get an error 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object' when it starts to try and add files to the tree view.
I have a VB project which I'm trying to configure with three build configurations.I've successfully created the build configurations, but I decided the names I was using weren't descriptive enough so I went to Configuration Manager -> <Edit...> -> Rename and renamed them.
This renamed the configurations in the Configuration Manager.I then went to do some conditional compilation testing using #If CONFIG = but it failed.Checking deeper, it turns out that the values returned by CONFIG are the original names not the new names.Checking My Project -> Compile -> Configuration I can see that the names shown in that ComboBox are also the old names.
So, even though I have "renamed" my configurations in Configuration Manager, they're not being renamed on all levels.I can get around this by recreating these configurations with their intended names but that's about as bass ackwards a solution as I can think of. Is there some method of renaming configurations that actually works or is this just the way MS intended this to."work"?
I have a visual studio solution written using VB.net. The solution contains 4 projects.

Is there a straightforward way to make a copy of a VB.NET solution and continue the project in another direction? I'd think this is a common problem but haven't been able to find an easy solution. Copying the files and renaming seems messy to me. Does the VS IDE provide anything like this? Update: It's a small project on my home computer so I'm currently not using source control. I wasn't expecting to need to fork or anything. Is there a way I can do this without setting up git or similar?

View 1 RepliesStupid question, but how do I get access to this Explorer? The says: To create a performance session for Windows client application:
(1) Open the solution in the Visual Studio IDE.
(2) On the <B>Analyze</B> menu, click <B>Launch Performance Wizard</B>.
(3) From the <B>Which of the following available targets would you like to profile?</B> drop-down list, select the name of the application that you want to profile, and then click <B>Next</B>. You can add more binaries later.
(4) Accept the default Sampling profiling method, and then click Next.
(5) Click <B>Finish</B>.
Only problem is that there is no <B>Analyze</B> menu in the IDE.
How do you view the code from a .exe application file that was created using Visual Studio? There are several applications of which codes I want to see to understand how the application was created to increase my understanding of VB.
View 4 RepliesI'm maintaining a WinForms application which was not written using any development patters conducive to localizing the classes in the project which were not directly associated with forms, or the code-behind partials of the forms. Thus, there is MessageBox() code with English text in it in almost every code file. I'd like to find a tool which will "scrape" those strings from the code, insert the strings in a resource file, and substitute a call to the resource with the substituted string in a comment.

I'm running Visual Studio 2010 on a terminal server, and have been, with relatively few problems, for some time. This morning I fired up my PC and over the UK's long weekend, the following issue seems to have developed.I've got a bunch of projects (but not all of my projects, and not all of the projects in a given solution) complaining that a particular file (which does not exist on the computer) cannot be opened, and so those projects will not compile anymore. Here's the error:
Error 31 Unable to open module file'C:Users[username]AppDataLocalTemp2.NETFramework,Version=v4.0.AssemblyAttributes.vb':
System Error &H80070003&
I could simply copy the file into that directory and be done with it, I'm pretty sure that will work,EDIT: Okay, now things have gotten to a whole new level of weird. I've rebooted the server, I get the same error message, only now the file it is asking for exists and can be opened in Visual Studio with no problems. another part of the IDE still insists that it's unable to open the module file.
EDIT 2: Can't delete the file because it claims to be open in another program, but I've logged off and logged on again, and there shouldn't be anything accessing it.
EDIT 3: Because there's a wall of comments below his answer, I'll mention here that Jared's suggestion to delete the SUO file for the solutions having the problem (not files specifically to do with any of the problem projects, strangely) was what solved this, eventually.
Can I get access to the code of an application without having the Project Solution file? We had someone leave the company and we need to get to the code that they created. What we have are the following files:[code]....
I only know how to access code by clicking on the project solution file for an application but I'm not sure if there is another way to do it.
I realize this post is rather long, but I wanted to give all the information up front instead of people having to ask me for more information. At the end of the re-installation of Visual Studio 2008, there is this message:
"Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard. MSI returned error code 1638" in the log file dd_error_vs_procore_90.txt.
I have searched on Google for this whole message and found some references to this error, but I have done what they said worked for them and it did not fix the problem for me.When I searched for just "MSI returned error code 1638", I got that it cannot install something because it is already installed:"Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel".In Add/Remove Programs I see these two programs:
Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.3
Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.4
Are these programs/versions what the error is refering to? Am I safe to remove them and depend on the similarly-named item which would be newly installed with Visual Studio 2008 - "Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard"? I still use SQL Server 2000 and 2005 on my computer, as well as 2008. I had installed VS 2008 on my computer before without this problem and also have VS 2005 and 2010.
When I load my solution and compile it after first starting the IDE, everything works as expected. After changing source and recompiling, I get the following compile error:
Error 11 Unable to copy file "objDebugCAMDRS.Library.dll" to "binCAMDRS.Library.dll". The process cannot access the file 'binCAMDRS.Library.dll' because it is being used by another process. CAMDRS.Library.
After closing Visual Studio 2005 and reopening the solution I can compile again successfully. This is an old solution that has been fine for a long time. I just recently changed computers and reinstalled everything.I am running win XP Pro sp2, Visual Studio 2005 sp1.
How do I add a comment to code snippet in Visual Studio?

View 3 RepliesWe have developed an application on the Access plattform for the last 3 years. Now we see that it has grown to a size where we would like to convert to standalone program because of Access licensing demand. I have been in contact with MS about Visual Studio and gotten a price for 300pr license of VS.I also had some technical questions about VS, but there MS have a technical customer support which are to expensive to have some presale question

I am new to Visual Studio and (I am using Visual Studio 2005)I know how to connect/edit, etc to an access database by just using coding but I am having a problem with the Visual Studio Database wizard.
When I create a new Data Source and I specify a Microsoft Access Database File (OLE DB) connection + *.mdb filename, etc I am able to drag the table name onto the form and browse the contents of the database when running the application. No problem there.
The problem is when I run the application and adding new records to the database via the form, the new data does not get saved. I run the app (F5) + add new data to the database + save + then close the app. When I rerun the app from Visual Studio (F5), the new data is gone.
I have been trying to open a solution file downloaded from my class for the past two days. When I open the assignment file on my destop to access the solution file, it's not there. I have the variables design, obj, bin, and others but not the .sln file which is the one that I need. How can I fix that problem?
View 2 RepliesI'm trying to create a database of all the Magic The Gathering cards I have in inventory and I'd like to have a picture preview of the card in my program. In access I've created a table and for each row I've attached an image of the card. Now I can't get the image to display in Visual Studio. The picture type is the correct format and databindings are all correct. I just can't seem to get the picture to preview as I go down the list in my datagrid. So far I haven't written any code. I've built the application in design view just dragging items from my data sources window.

View 4 RepliesI've been googling to find a guide on how to access a database with visual studio.I cant find anything complete or up to date. I should point out that I dont have a great deal of experience with SQL.I'm not really 100% sure where to start. Most of the guides I've found tend to assume your accessing an existing SQL database and I need to set one up from scratch. I'm not sure if I'm even setting SQL server up correctly. point me in the right direction on where to get started. A good, up to date tutorial would be great.
For my purposes the SQL database will only be written to from the local machine but there will also be another machine writing to this database.I'm currently using Visual basic Express 2010 and SQL Server Express 2008 R2, mostly because they are the most recent when I googled it.
