View 2 RepliesMy boss has given me an asp.net web application that was done by his former employee. Now my boss has no contact with that employee. He wants me to make some changes in that web application. I went through the application. There is no documentation present for that application . Its a huge application. It contains many directories. I think it was a team work. It has many asp pages, aspx pages, jsp pages, xml pages, css pages, etc... How to understand other person or team's website or web application that was written in asp or asp.net and vb or vb.net?
View 4 RepliesI have a program developed in VB.NET (2008) which consists of a MDI form and several child forms. It worked like a normal mdi application whereby mdi form acted like a container for child forms and things worked out okay. Code like Me.Mdichildren or Me.ActiveMdiChild etc could be used to get list of child forms etc.
Now what happened is I needed to implement a tabbed system. There will be multiple tabs and forms would be in those tabs. So I added a Tab control in mdi form and now new forms are added to selected tab page. This way muliple tab pages can host forms and there is no need to see all childforms at once. But a problem has come up. I do say ChildForm.MdiParent = Me (as before) but then I say TabPage1.Controls.Add(ChildForm). Doing so functions like list of mdi children or me.activemdichild or auto arrange options like Cascade,Tile Horizontal, Vertical etc are not working.
I have a nested class, let's call it class1 and it has class2 inside it; VB.Net eg:[code]
1) How can I define X number of Class2 objects[let's call it: Node(x) array]** with NEW() subroutine called?' this raises error: dim cls2(n) as new class2 end sub.
2) How can I return actual number of Node() array? [code]Outside my class in main project I define cls1 object:[code]Now an array of class2 is created inside cls1.
3) Now,How can I access All of them[node(x) array which is created inside cls1] with all properties and methods available?
I remember I wrote a ProcessManager class with this functionality in .net 2003, nearly 4 years age, I don't have the code now.
I've created a tab control and on one of the pages I added a button, but I cannot move the button around with the mouse!? I can change the buttons position within the tab control page using the property Location and I can size the button using the mouse and the button is NOT locked. I even tried creating a new project with just the tab control and it still does the same thing. I can, tho, move the button using the keyboard arrows!
I'm using VS2010 V10.0.30319.1 RTMREL on WinXP SP3.
I have an aspx page with some controls. One of which is an iFrame, whose source changes (depending on the selection in a listbox). So, if a user selects an item in the listbox (ie: Claims.aspx), the iFrames source changes to "Claims.aspx".
Now here comes the tricky part. I have a button on my 'child' pages (ie: Claims.aspx). I'd really really really like to have that button execute either:
1) Javascript from the 'parent' page
2) A VB function in the code-behind of the 'parent' page
Any way to do this? (and really, why do I suddenly feel like I'm working with VB 3.0?

View 2 RepliesI have an MDI form which has got a dynamic menu based on various conditions. Clicking one of the menu items open up a child form, as well as changes the menu again specific to the child form. Now, when I close the child form, I should be able to change the menu back to the way it was before opening the child form.
I have the methods to add/remove the menu items under a menu head in the MDI form. What I tried to do is, in the child form_formclosing event call the methods to change back the menu items the way it was before opening the child form. Debugging through the code I can see the methods are getting called, the menu items are getting changed, however, after the form is closed, I see the same menu items which was there when the child form was open. I have no idea why!
Just to give you an idea about the project, its a very simple MDI form with a number of child forms, using Visual Studio 2010, VB.NET platform.
I am trying to access a control (statusbar panel) on my MDI parent form from a child form.
Here's my
(located in child form)
Dim frmParent As frmMain
frmParent = DirectCast(Me.MdiParent, frmMain)

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
I've currently created the class below. For some reason though I can't access the properties I've created through my xaml style.
Public Class Ribbon : Inherits Button
Private mpopDropdown As Popup
Public Property Dropdown() As Popup

but they don't seem to expose the property either. I've also tagged the property as <Bindable(True)> but that didn't seem to do anything.
Is it possible for one class to access an array of values within another class as a readonly property of the second class? All of the examples and references on class properties imply that one can only retrieve one value by calling a class' property.
View 2 RepliesI have an exceptionhandler function that basically just writes a line to a textbox on Form1. This works fine when being run normally but the second I use a thread to start a process it cannot access the property. No exception is thrown but no text is written to the textbox:
Public Sub ExceptionHandler(ByVal Description As String, Optional ByVal Message As String = Nothing)
' Add Error To Textbox
If Message = Nothing Then
Form1.txtErrLog.Text += Description & vbCrLf
Log_Error(Description)
[Code] .....
Is it possible to access a form's properties from a thread this way or would it be easier to write to a text file or similar and refresh the textbox properties every 10 seconds or so (Don't see this as a good option but if it's the only way it will have to do!).

View 1 RepliesIf I have a custom windows service running on a server, is there anyway I can access the value of a property/variable within that service? For example, I would like to have a client vb program be able to "read" the value some variable from that service. A simple example would be the service would capture a boolean value of the success or failure of the last time it kicked off a process. I would then like to have a client windows app "connect" with the service and be able to read that boolean value.

I've created managed code to programmatically provision websites on Windows 2008 servers from a Vista 64-bit workstation. The provisioning covers creating DNS entries, creating a file structure and a the IIS7 site (using Microsoft.Web.Administration aka MWA).I've had to do some DCOM configuration to get it to work through a firewall and it all works on the test server provided I'm in the same domain.I then cloned the Windows Server 2008 Virtual Machine (VM) that the provisioning does work on and then changed the clone's domain to the child domain in the forest where the production servers are sitting. The provisioning user credentials are synchronised on the parent and child domains. So the only change is moving domains and there is an automatically configured trust relationship between the domains.
Provisioning the file system still works on the server on the child domain, but managing DNS and IIS7 now have access issues.I've tried impersonating the Administrator on the child domain (and the thread identity is showing that works) and also had a go with CoInitializeSecurity (though I'm not sure that is appropriate for Win2008 and Vista)to no avail. What I really want to avoid is the need to have to store credentials separately on the workstation - it brings an unwelcome maintenance overhead and the possibility that if the provisioning user's password is changed, then the provisioning will unexpectedly fail on the production servers.Ideally once the provisioning user has logged onto the Vista Workstation, I'd like their credentials to pass through to the servers on the child domains (there are separate DNS and web servers) allowing them to manipulate whatever services (DNS, IIS7, file system) that are necessary. The solutions would seem to be something programmatic (whatever replaced CoInitializeSecurity?) or a Group Policy setting on the child domain may need altering to allow access. However being a humble software developer working out which of the myriad settings (one of the User Rights Assignments perhaps?) is outside my sphere of knowledge. The third alternative is to use Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) but I haven't done much with this yet and what I have indicates that this technology has its own security issues to accommodate.
I'm trying to update a dependancy property in VB.Net 4.0 inside of an Async callback. I feel like I am doing this correctly but I'm still getting the "The calling thread cannot access this object because a different thread owns it." error. Does someone see a better way of using delegates in VB.Net 4.0?
Private WithEvents myObj as CallingObject
Private Delegate Sub MyErrorDel(ByVal strError as string)
Public Property ErrorMessage As String

Whenever ErrorMessage gets set inside of DisplayError an exception gets thrown, even though I am using the dispatcher to call DisplayError.
I am moving from VB to C#. I am trying to loop through a collection class which is a collection of data classes but I can't seem to get the actual values out of the data class properties(find the correct code to do so). I have a method that loops through the collection class(Contacts) and saves each record(Contact). I am using reflection because my method will not know if it is Contacts class or a Customer class and so forth. Here is my code in VB(watered down)
Public Function SaveCollection(ByVal objCollection as Object, ByVal TableName as string, ByVal spSave as string)
Dim objClass as Object
[Code]....
The C# code keeps returning null. In my locals window I can see the proprties on the class on objClass and the value of the propery but I can seem to figure out how to access it through code. I used the DictionaryBase because that seems to closely match would I need to do. My data class(Contact) has a bunch or properties that match the field names in the database of the Contact Table. After I get the propInfo variable set I then set up my SQLParameter with the fieldname, datatype etc and then set the value to the propInfo.value.
I am trying to access MS/Word document properties without opening the file in Word. Right now I have an app that reads the document properties but it has to open the document in word. This makes it run very slowly and also makes it susceptible to crashing if the document is corrupted. In Windows Explorer, you can right-click on a word document file and select properties. The ensuing dialog box contains, in addition to the usual information, two additional tabs labelled "Summary" and "Custom" that correspond to the same tabs in the dialog box you can open from File/Properties menu in Word. I know windows explorer is not opening the document in word because there is no instance of word.exe in task manager and because it has no difficulty in obtaining this information from the file even when it cannot be opened in Word because the document has become corrupted. If anyone could help me figure out how to read custom and built-in document fields (properties) from the file without opening it in Word,
View 1 RepliesI need to migrate from Excel 2003 VBA to Excel 2007 VBA. When Microsoft introduced Excel 2007 it removed many objects from the previous versions and added some new objects. Also it hid some properties of particular objects. These hidden properties can be viewed by going to the object browser, right clicking any object and selecting "Show Hidden Members". My problem is I need to access these hidden properties. Is there any way I can access these properties. I can successfully migrate from Excel 2003 VBa to Excel 2007 VBA with the same functionality?
View 5 RepliesI have to make a VB project for one of my college Co-Sci classes. However, I am having issues doing what I think is logically possible. Part of our project entails creating a user defined class, then create a form that then instantiates an instance of the object type. After that we are to list the item in a listbox. That is all well and good and works fine.
What I need help with is looping through each object in the listbox, getting some data from the object, then moving to the next.
I have been trying something similar to c++. For example, an object contained in a c++ array can be accessed like this:
array[index].someObjectMethod().
How would someone do something similar to that for objects contained in a VB listbox? I imagine it starts something like this:
myListBox.Items(index).
I have used the following code to generate buttons dynamically. I want to know how to code in such a way that if i click one button, there should be some change done to some other button in the same form. Since all the buttons are generated in the loop, i do not know how to call one button elsewhere in the code.
Private Sub random2_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Dim i As Integer

how to handle movement of buttons that are made in runtime. What my program does is writes the name of a button that is made in runtime, the left, and top cordinate into a textfile. When the user reopens the program it needs to load the button in the same spot. So far i have a streamreader reading the file in each line. There is a one sentence split by ",". Each of the three components are loaded into an array. how can i call the buttons it i am unsure of the name. Possible answer could include using sender, addhandler.

I'm writing a really simple file updater which downloads files off from a website and saves them. The download routine is working well, except that it freezes the project while attempting to connect to the host. Easily solved with threading except now when I try to access other form items such as text boxes, labels, form caption, it says I am not doing it in a safe manner and prompts an interrupt in debug. I did some reading on it and I'm still not sure what to do, I'm very new to vbnet and it is still a little confusing to me.
Error: Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'Form1' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.

Within my project I have created an Entity Data Model, complete with relationship links between the various tables. I notice when I do so, Visual Studio automatically creates a property named after this link.
I have then generated a Domain Service Class based on this data model, and once again within this a property is generated representing the link, ie within my ChemicalApplication class there is a Chemical property of type Chemical.
The trouble is, within the silverlight client, I can access the ChemicalApplication data object no bother, and can see the ChemicalApplication.Chemical property, but as soon as I try to access it, I recieve an error that the property is not initialised.
Do these auto-generated child properties not automatically initialise? If not, how do i manually assign a value to them within the RIA Domain Service?
Does anyone know how to spy the child objects of a browser object, using VB.net, I am exploring an option of developing a Web spy tool.
View 1 RepliesI have a custom class (Class1) with a bunch of properties. One of the properties of this class is another custom class (Class2) with its own properties.I have a property grid with the selected object set to Class 1. I can see Class 2 as a property, but i would like to expand Class 2 to show its properties in the same property grid.
Im basically trying to do the exact same thing as the Font Class on a form. If you look at the properties of a form in the designer, you can see the font property. You can then expand that to show the properties of the font class.
I have a program I've been working on for some time now and I'd like to try to streamline it somewhat. I have a main menu form that has a split panel, in the left panel is a treeview that displays forms you can open and when one is selected, it opens in a child window in the right panel. Each time I open form I called DWNForm, it does a series of dataset loads which are the populating items for a series of listviews.
What I would like to do is have these datasets load once during the mainMenu load and then have the DWNForm be able to access the datasets once it is called from the treeview selection.
I have an array of variables called VolumeArray(12) which is declared as publlic shared in the main form1.I have a second form2 which allows the user to input various values. When this form2 is closed, I need the data the user has entered to update the values for VolumeArray(12) within Form1.
