View 1 RepliesI am just wondering how I can add Direct X references to Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2. I cant find them in the .NET reference list, or the reference list, or anywhere. I downloaded the Direct X SDK for August 2009, but I can not add the .dll files to the reference list. Is there anything I can do to add them? I need the references for programming reasons.
View 5 RepliesJust curious. I recently had an incident in which I was called to troubleshoot a VB Winforms app. I have 2 versions of a package (LeadTools) installed on my machine. These packages contain numerous dlls and it is not unusual for a dozen or more to be referenced in a single program.

In my VS2010 VB project I have a lot of external references to DLLs, to the point that organization has become a major headache and I'm wondering if I am going about it the wrong way. My assembly references include common redistributables (SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1, ReportViewer 2010 SP1, DataVisualization, as well as some useful 3rd party dlls from CodeProject and CodePlex.
Currently, I am copying each DLL into a 1st level folder (/dll_lib) under my named project folder (under the solution folder), and adding the reference from that path. However, I see that Visual Studio copies the DLLs to various other locations (/bin/debug or /bin/release) in my project when I build the project or solution, and some of the 3rd party DLLs come with instructions to copy them manually to /bin.
What is the "best practice" for where to put the DLLs? Can I just put all of them under /bin and let the build event copy to /bin/debug or /bin/release as required? Should I try to force a single reference path for the dlls in the project output?
I would use the System.Linq.Dynamic. I added the specified Dynamic.vb file, that starts like this:
[Code]...
to my (VB.NET)solution. Now Visual Studio does not recognize anymore in the project files the System.XXX references, proposing me to change them to Global.System.XXX
How does the Visual studio populate the references tab?By using something like currentDomain.GetAssemblies() or what?
View 2 RepliesOver and over i keep getting stuck on the idea of adding references to a project. I was looking about visual studios 2010, i clicked the project menu tab, and then scrolled to add reference. When i would click on it, it would bring up a large list to choose from. So, my issue is as follows. I am told to reference via my compile error message a few items. I thought i found the elements i was looking for and pressed OK. When i would try to run, it would still give me the errors.
What am i doing wrong? Am i not doing something correct?
here is my error code, and i looked it up, but for some reason, as stated above, i must not be referencing correctly?

I am very new to Visual Studio Application Development. I'm mostly a DB guy. I used Visual Studio as a Report Designer, not much of an .Net guy though I can understand it. I am now asked to create a .net application and I'm trying to create a "Hello World" starter app. I opened my Visual Studio, click File-New Project and all I see is Business Intelligence Projects and Other Project Types. My step-by-step guide says choose Visual Basic, Windows Forms Application. But I can't see it as an option.

View 1 RepliesIsNot Nothing is very common, but it's a double negative =o I'd like to use Exists instead. Is there someway I can add a keyword to my VB vocab? For now, I wrote an extension that adds _Exists() as a property to each object. I use this frequently, but I'd still prefer an actual keyword.

I use Visual Studio 2010 exclusively, so if I could trick VS into converting my custom phraseology into the standard syntax, that'd work for me.
For reasons that are beyond my control, I have three Projects. Projects A and B reference project C. Project A references project B so that it can open a large form in project B. I now need to open that large form from project C, but VB won't allow me to add a reference from C to B because that would create a circular dependency. I found a way around it, though. I created a Timer in A, and when I opened C from A, I passed in that timer. When the user performs a certain action, I enable the Timer from A, and this causes C to open B for me.

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

When I use Me.close() associated with this button it closes the entire project and not just the single form can anyone.
I have a vb 6 project developed with VB6.0 on XP. I've installed Visual Studio (Professional Edition)2008 on a Windows 7 box. When I tried to convert the vb 6 project (.vbp file) using VB 2008's wizard, I got error messages that the "upgrade failed" because it could not "load the referenced components: msadodc.ocx (6.0.0) and msde.dll It is recommended you install VB6.0 with all referenced components......"I have the VB6.0 CD's and tried to install it on the Win7.0 box and got the message that VB6.0 was incompatible ?

I am by no means a programmer, but I was recently tasked with moving our website to a new server, since the website manager quit. The Visual Studio solution was written in 2008. I can compile and run the solution, so I'm sure it's working just fine. But every time I try to publish the solution, either to FTP or to my local hard drive, the .asp webpages get deployed to a sub directory, where on the live site, they are in the root.

However, once I install it, there seems to be no connection with the Database. The Forms give me the Oledb error as Im using Access. However, the login form seems to connect with the database. In other words, my applications gets authenticated, but when I try to open other forms, there seem to be an error with DB connection

View 2 RepliesSo if I am working on a project in VB.net (really any visual studio project), I am able to create folders. My project is getting rather unweildy (over 30 classes) and I think it would be beneficial to store for example data structure classes in a folder "ds" and user controls in a folder "uc". Is this OK? Will it affect the way I reference the classes? Are the folders simply for my own use and structure or do they actually have some kind of impact on my project as a whole?
PS in case you are confused, I am referring to the structure shown in the "Solution Explorer". Sorry if this is a dumb question or not clear, but I have never worked on a large project like this before.
