Adding To Existing Excel File From Datagridview?
Oct 17, 2010
I'm trying to figure out what would be the easier method for what I'm trying to accomplish. What I have is in, on the main form, a datagridview that is bound to an xls file. I then have another form that the user can import/paste data to another dgv. This content then needs to be appended to the end of the main form's dgv. Would it be easier to add it straight to the dgv and then save it to the excel file or save it to the excel file and reload the dgv? Or does it matter? I'm not exactly sure how to do either method but I figured I would start here.

This may be a lengthy explaination, but I am hoping to make myself clear.I have an existing Excel file that is created using the following code:
Dim warnings() As Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.Warning = Nothing
Dim streamids() As String = Nothing
Dim mimeType As String = Nothing

I have an application the contains several excel files bundled with it. I'm not opening the files and processing them within my application. These files contain a data-connection to reload all of the pivot-tables within each excel file. I have a 'link' on my form, that when clicked, it determines which file to open and calls a sub using filename and executing Process.Start(filename) for any excel file I want to open. I have no problems opening any one of the files and then exiting excel.
The problem is when I 'close' a file, but don't exit Excel; then try to open another file(clicking link on form)... it creates a new instance of Excel.
I know from experimenting that the fileopendialog form will 'reuse' an existing Excel instance, IF it does not already have a file open.
How can I do the same thing without using the fileopendialog?
I don't want the end-user to have access to the folders where these files live. That's why I have multiple 'links' on my form, one for each xls that already exists. I just want them to be able to click on a link and the xls file opens AND if they choose to merely 'close' a file and not exit... Don't create a new instance of Excel, but re-use the existing one.

I'm working on a project where I have to allow users to write data to an existing Excel worksheet (by entering the data into a form created in Visual Basic.NET). I've created a form that allows users to enter data such as the following:
Name (First, Last)
Mailing Address
Email Address
Gender
Age
...and so on. I've programmed the data to be sent to the Excel file upon clicking on the Submit button in the form itself. I've also created the Excel file and placed it on my C: drive, but the problem I'm having is trying to send the data from the VB form to the Excel file itself. Can someone please show me some sample code or point me in the right direction as to how to get the submitted information from the form to save into the Excel file, please?
I'm trying to get the information to show up in rows and columns in Excel like the following below (the dashes are just to show that the information should be in rows and columns):
Name--------------------------Mailing Address-------Email Address-------Gender-------Age
John Doe---------------------2300 Jackson Street-------- xxx@xxxx.com-------Male---------17

I am trying to open an excel file and write to it as data becomes availableI can create an instance of excel and write to the selected worksheet once. But, I can't seem to write back to the existing file. I keep on getting a null reference error when I try to send new data to the file. The function I am using will run once, but when it returns to the main form, I lose the values of xlApp and xlWorksheet. It appears that going in to the function makes the original values null.

I have a visual basic 2010 project with a solution. When I double click the solution the project opens. I cannot see the solution file. I am trying to add an existing project to my solution but I am having trouble. How do I add an existing project to an existing solution?
In VB 2005 if I double click the solution the solution opens with the project underneath it. But in VB 2010 they have made it complicated apparently.

I have an executable that now has a requirement to expose data in XML format via a web service which can be queried by a browser. While I've seen tons about consuming web services and creating web services in web projects, I've not found anything that adequately explains adding such a service (or an equivelant) to an existing Windows app.

Once Workbook 2 is opened, I need to copy a section of data from it, into Workbook1 int a specific worksheet. I was able to do this by recording a macro, but the challange is, the name of Workbook 1, and Workbook 2, will vary by User. When I created the macro it uses the files as they are currently named. The section of code is below.

So I'm working on this project. I got around 60 images or so which I need to OCR, then I'll be inputting that data into my program which formats it and inputs it within this DataGridView. Now, I need the same data to be exported into an excel file. I saw several tutorials online but none of them are current (for VB 2008 or 2010). Either that, or they're not for VB.NET Windows Form Application. [I'm using VS 2010]
I'm fairly new to Datagridview as well. Just learnt how to add data to datagridview using this tutorial:
http:vb.net-inform...ridview_add.htm I was hoping you could help me out with where to start once I get my data all set up in the datagridview?

for i = 0 as integer to 100
result &= "Name" & sqldr("name")
result &= "Lastname" & sqldr("lastname")
result &= "dob" & sqldr("dob")
next
The sqldr is the sql datareader (not important here)
I want my end result to be
Name1 = Sam
Lastname1 = Davis
dob1 = 01/01/1966
Name2 =
...
Name3 =
And so on depending on how manyrecords are in database. How do I make this happen in this for loop?

I have done a google and see that many people have asked the question on how to export a Datagridview to a Excel (.xls) file. For some reason I cannot seem to get it to work (i have gotton the program to open an Excel and save it, all hidden in the background). I use a bit of the coding from this source code [URL] but modified it and incorporated it into my program. It connects an OLE Database connection with the excel sheet... but what i want to do is beable to alter the sheet in the datagridview and export it back to an excel sheet. I am not trying to sound pushy when i say this but... if you download the source file i am using you will get a really good idea of my situation..

I have a a DGV with the following fields:
FirstName
LastName
Address
Job
StaffNum
Nationality
DOB
Notes
Picture
FileName
Now my DGV has records in it and I try to export it to Excel File. Now it exports the the Column Names above but none of the records. My code is below.
Dim fs As New IO.StreamWriter("C:exported.xls", False)
fs.WriteLine("<?xml version=""1.0""?>")
fs.WriteLine("<?mso-application progid=""Excel.Sheet""?>")
fs.WriteLine("<ss:Workbook xmlns:ss=""urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:spreadsheet"">")
fs.WriteLine("<ss:Styles>")
[Code] .....
I got this code from the MSDN forums from a link someone posted. They said they changed IntCol and it worked to incoude the records as well but I cant figure it out. When I hit Export it does prom,pt me to save the file and saves the Names above to excel sheet but none of the records.
