Algorithm For Drawing Tree Diagrams?

Am looking for an Algorithms that will take object that a linked to multiple other object and work out the best location to draw each object based on there links.
this would generate a tree like diagram.
So i have Object 1 then hast 10 link, one of these link is object 2 that has 5 link but object 1 link to one of object2s links and such link.
so i would have some thing like this
Object1 ------------ Object2
/
/ /
Object 3
But this is on a 100% bigger scale with unlimited number of objects and links.
how i would go about working out the best location on my form for each object?

I am not the original author of this software project and the code is poorly documented. I am mainly a Java/C++ developer.The program displays the tree structure and allows files and folder to be selected. The program is getting errors with FileSystemTreeView when trying to return nodes on a system with a reserved partition.Here is what is happening: tree.SelectedNode = tree.Nodes(0) 'returns error with system reserved partition.calling, GetDriveList() will properly return all the drive letters - and not throw an error. Only when trying to get a tree.Node() or tree.load() is the error occurring.

I need some code to draw a resizable, draggable rectangular cursor (or selection box) on a picturebox. I found some excellent code (albeit rather old) that does just that, but on a form rather than a picturebox. I have tried converting the code - basically moving things to the picturebox events (Paint, MouseDown, MouseMove etc). It nearly works but leaves a trail behind it when you move or resize the cursor. In other words, the selection rectangle is not being erased before being drawn in the new position.
Is there some fundamental difference between drawing graphics on a form and drawing on a picturebox that would cause this behaviour? Something like, when you invalidate a form and cause a redraw it erases what you did last? If not, then I just need to dig a bit further and work out how the cursor is being erased from the previous position.
Here's the original code that works fine on a form:

Say I have 3 Buttons, labelled: Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3. When I click on any button I want a drawing of that unit to appear on screen at a pre-specified starting point. I am making a web browser using geckofx. I have put the favicon in a picture box but I have changed my mind and now I want it as the form's icon. The code for the favicon is:[code...]
The favicon works fine in the picture box but i think it will look better as an icon. If i change the line Me.PictureBox1.Image = favicon to Form1.icon = favicon I get the error Value of type 'System.Drawing.Image' cannot be converted to 'System.Drawing.Icon'. How can I get this to work?

drag and drop nodes within the same tree (not between trees) when users drag and drop nodes within the tree, give them the option to move the original node to a new location within the tree OR to just copy the original node in a new location (seems complex but I have a month to figure this out). change the system default blue highlight for selected nodes to another color change the system default cursors for invalid and valid drops (instead of the circle with slash indicating invalid target, i want a red minus) and (instead of the little plus sign with little box indicating a valid target, i want just a big green plus sign) add a red insert line to indicate where the node would be dropped within a tree also drag and drop the text of a node from the tree to a textbox add a "folder" image next to parent nodes and a "document" image next to children nodes

I'll do my best to explain what the algorithm is supposed to do:There's a class 'Recipe'.ach Recipe can include other Recipes but cannot include itself or any other Recipe that includes it. I am using VB.NET and I am trying to come up with some algorithm or some pseudo-code, or some VB.NET code that will let me do the following (hopefully I can explain this well):I have 2 collection objects, Cob1 and Cob2. These collection objects store objects that implement an interface called ICob. ICob has 3 properties. A boolean IsSelected property, a property called Length, which returns a TimeSpan, and a Rating property, which is a short integer.
OK, now Cob1 has about 100 objects stored in the collection and Cob2 is an empty collection. What I want to do is select objects from Cob1 and copy them over to Cob2. I want the following rules obeyed when selecting the objects though:
