I'm trying to anchor to a MDI child that is docked (fill) in the parent.I know this is odd, but the anchoring I did for the form, will work if I maximize it, or if I manually stretch it, but if it is set to .dock = fill to the main form the anchors don't work at all.
View 5 RepliesIf you have a Control contained within another Control and the Child Control has the default Anchoring (Top + Left) AND AutoSize=False (Assuming the control has that Property) changing the Parent Control's Top or Left Padding will not offset the Child Control.If you change the Anchoring of the Child Control to anything other than the default values OR set AutoSize=True, the Control is correctly offset when the Parent Control's Padding values are changed.

My program handles XML files that have certain elements within a root-child node that are identical expect for their inner text value. So while populating my combo box with all of a root-child's child element's names I get like five identical items listed. Which brought about the problem of selecting say the third item and getting the value of the first displayed. So I came up with a loop function that determines if the selected combo box item is preceded by one of the same name, if it is, then it adds +1 to a counter variable and keeps checking farther and farther up the list. Once it loops to an item that doesn't have the same name it exits and it reads the Xth (X = counter mentioned earlier) element's inner text from the file. This works great for elements 1, 3, 4, and 5. But not for 2. A while back when I was focused on this problem I discovered the root of the problem but I was unable to circumvent it. I'll put the loop below so you can see the problem in action instead of trying to follow my verbose explanation:

Now I would like to change button1's backcolor property through code how do I then get access to button1, now it's a child-control on panel5 that is a child control on panel4 etc. ??

I have a table (Projects) which is linked to projectVersions on projectID..projectVersions contains several columns on which I'd like to filter a returned project (and associated projectVersions) list. For example there is a "capacity" column and a "country" column. I am doing a filtered list of projects on one page and I'd like to include all projects where any one of the associated projectVersions has a capacity of 750ml and a country of "France" for example.It may be that a particular parameter is not set and so I pass a zero to indicate not to filter on that.I guess this needs some kind of subquery as when I try and do something like this: [code] it doesn't work as the "xxx" bit, being one-to-many, expects me to specify an item to get at the entities within and yet I want to query where ANY of the associated versions match one of the criteria.

Scenario I have an MDI form with a UserControl docked at the top. The UserControl is for navigation and is ~50 pixels in height. When I show a child form with its WindowState property already set to 'Maximized', the child form shows maximized in the MDI parent, but behind the UserControl.

I have a MenuStrip with File > New, Open, Save, Exit located in a parent form, and a RichTextBox located in a child form.The problem I'm running into is concerned with the destination of the file elected from "Open" and the save.When a user selects their file from "Open", I need it to open the child form and put the text into the RichTextBox.I also need the program to be able to "Save" from a child form, whether it's been brought up via "New" or "Open".

View 2 RepliesI have an MDI application where a child form (A) opens a second form as a Dialog (B), which works great but you can't do anything in the MDI until you close the Dialog form.I've now changed the Dialog form (B) so it just calls as a Show and I have disabled the parent form (A). This works better and allows you to click anywhere in the MDI (except the parent form (A)) which is ideal and works much better.
The problem comes if you maximize the parent form (A) and then open form (B), this is then also maximised but I need it to be a fixed.I've done some research and I've tried using the API SetParent which gets round the problem of the form being maximized but this makes the form TopMost in the MDI.
All I need is form B to be topmost of form A and to be a fixed size. Is there any solution?

View 6 RepliesI have a dictionary object (let's call it _do) I am using to cache some values for use in a multi-threaded program. I have a single controlling parent thread, with a timer function _doTimer() which can kick off child threads with a new instance of class MyThreadObject in each. My parent thread has _do as a property and with each time _doTimer() gets called, it may or may not repopulate _do depending on cacheflag settings. I pass a reference to _do to each instance of MyThreadObject and those threads at some point read the values of _do but DO NOT write to it.
What I want is to ensure that the child threads do not try and read _do whilst the parent thread is writing to it. Same thing but very slightly different -> I also don't want the parent thread to write to _do whilst the child threads are reading from it. However there is no problem with 1 child thread reading the values of _do at the same time as another child thread is reading the values - so ideally I do not want each child thread to completely lock out read access, only locking out Write access.. The code is roughly like this:

View 1 RepliesI'm creating an application that uses an MDI container to create a sort of desktop style for my form with a group of icons docked to the left hand side. The rest of the form is the desktop area that I want all windows to open in.If I use the standard File-New option that is provided by VB as a default for the MDI container this works fine and a child window is loaded.If I use similar code from one of the icons this also works fine.y problem is that one of my child forms is a search panel and when I double click on one of the results I want a window to open, but as an MDI child. However, this doesnt happen. When I open the window it opens as a completely separate window and isn't docked within the MDI parent. It also appears on the task bar as a separate application.

In Spy++ the original program (I'll refer to this as Window A from now on) is a top level window, and the popup (Window B) is also a parent window. OK, so I have the code to add a Child Node to a selected node in ta TreeView. The thing is, even if I select a child node to "add" to, it adds the new node to the parent of the selected child node.
I know why it does that: TreeView1.Nodes(TreeView1.SelectedNode.Index).Nodes.Add() adds to the first node. So how do I progamatically add to the child node I have selected, not it's parent node. I can't figure out the logic on how to accomplish this.
NOTE: There can be an infinite amount of child nodes.
UPDATE: I just found out that if I have a child node selected, TreeView1.SelectedNode.Index returns -1 since there is nothing selected in that first level. I'd have to use TreeView1.Nodes(0).SelectedNode.Index to get the proper index for the ChildNode. *sigh*

I have a program developed in VB.NET (2008) which consists of a MDI form and several child forms. It worked like a normal mdi application whereby mdi form acted like a container for child forms and things worked out okay. Code like Me.Mdichildren or Me.ActiveMdiChild etc could be used to get list of child forms etc.
Now what happened is I needed to implement a tabbed system. There will be multiple tabs and forms would be in those tabs. So I added a Tab control in mdi form and now new forms are added to selected tab page. This way muliple tab pages can host forms and there is no need to see all childforms at once.But a problem has come up. I do say ChildForm.MdiParent = Me (as before) but then I say TabPage1.Controls.Add(ChildForm). Doing so functions like list of mdi children or me.activemdichild or auto arrange options like Cascade,Tile Horizontal, Vertical etc are not working.
I know the title does not explain at all what I am having trouble with but I could not think of any other way to explain my self.[code]....
View 3 RepliesI have an mdi parent and 2 child forms. Both are opened. Now When I try to pass a value, it gives me nullexception value.
Heres how I created MDI child forms:

When both are opened with "a" having some text in textbox1 and "b" having empty textbox2. Now, I tried to get the value for "b" textbox from "a" as textbox2.text=a.textbox1.text. It gives me error. No value can be passed between child forms? How can I share the form events now?
I have a MDI based application with two problems. First: when i close the MDI child i want to ask if the user would like to save the data in the child and give them the regular choice yes,no,cancel however when i try to use the Formclosing event it never fires, it does fire for the mdi parent but that is no help.
Second: When i load the child i am using a template form to get all the controls and code, but if i close all the children then reopen one it errors because the controls are disposed.
