Anti Multiple Opening Of Same Dynamic Child Forms?
Sep 14, 2009
I have a program that will let you open a certain table in the database and query it on a child form in a MDI parent form. Of course the child form is a new instance of an existing form.The thing I want to do is that the opened table in the child form cannot be reopened again in the other child form. So I did was to create a childform name on every new instance of a childform depending what is the name of the table.
The first thing I did to do this restriction is to put the names of the opened table to an public array and when the user tried to reopen the table, the program will check if the childform name is already existing... and if it exist it will not let the user to open the table in new childform.When the childform is close it will erase it's name to the public array. And it can be open again.If you don't understand what I want to do this is the situation for example in a microsoft office when a word document file was open it will be put in a childform, and when the user tried to open the word file again and still the word file is open in the microsoft word the application will tell it's user that the word document file is still open.

Firstly though, I'll have to mention that I'm a relative newcomer to vb.net and don't really know that much about advanced functions.I have my main form which dynamically generates 15 buttons.
Each of these buttons will need to open another form, depending on which form has been assigned to that button in a config file (the config file isn't yet done, as I want to get it working simply by hardcoding the name of the forms for the time being)
The way I have it in my head is that I would assign the form name that needs to be open to the name of the button, if that makes sense....However, I have absolutely no clue how to do it, I've tried a couple of things but to no avail.
Here's my code, and I have no problem changing any part of it if it will help things along, this is just the only way I know how to create dynamic buttons.[CODE...]

In a MDI application, for opening a form in the MDI, I am using the following code
Private Sub RoleToolStripMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles RoleToolStripMenuItem.Click
Dim lobj_ChildForm As frmRole
'Check if form is already open
lobj_ChildForm = Nothing
[code]....
As you can see, I need loopong through all the open child forms.

I have a form which gets populated by 15 buttons dynamically at runtime (these need to be dynamic as there will be a user config file at some point)What I need these buttons to do is to open a specific form when clicked. Which form that opens will be dealt with in the config file.
Public Class frm_MainScreen
Private Sub frm_MainScreen_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Dim count As Integer
Dim ImageDir As String

It is my goal to write a program to run a retail store. I am an intermediate Access developer, so I have a good grasp of the basics.However, I find that developing in VB 2010 is quite different.I will have forms for:
Company Information
Employee Information
Supplier Information
Customer Information
Invoices & Purchase Orders
All I really need to know at this point is the code to open and close each form.

I have an MDI parent screen that loads on startup and a lot of child forms that load when opening. So as the child forms load there's a lot of flashing and it looks really ugly. Once they're loaded all I have to do is use a bring to front, maximized command and it works smoother than closing a form and opening a new one every time a different form is selected. I've tried creating a splash screen, minimizing the forms on load, etc and everything still works in order so first the splash screen then the forms load.
How would you set it up so a splash screen stays on top of all other forms for like 5 seconds while the forms load in the background without seeing them load? Right now the screen shows then when it's done it moves on to step 2 which is loading the child forms. If no splash screen, how do I make it load so you don't see all the child forms opening at once?

Over the past months I have been working on small windows forms applications and learning vb as i go along. The aim was to pull these altogether into one big application.
I am now at the stage of pulling these together I have created a new project (called MainMenu) and designed all the buttons and interface. I have added my other projects (SISApp, CURApp) to this project. File > Add > Existing Project. I can see these projects in the solution explorer.
Now my problem. How can show Form2 in the SISApp project when I click ButtonX in the MainMenu project.
I dont just want to show Form2, i want all the functionality and the database connection in form2 to also work etc.

I'm just having a small problem with tabpages. I have a program that have multiple forms (on startup they are all created and hidden, except for the one being viewed by the user). When the user open one particular form, I has a tab control with two pages. I also have a toolbar. when the user click a menu option, I call a method that assigns all my controls to a variable (to be used in an insert statement later).
Here's an example of that Sub:
Public Sub SetValues()
'page 1
DateCreated = Date.Now
DateEdited = Date.Now
DateCompleted = Me.DateTimePicker2.Text
[Code] .....
The problem is, the controls on the second page cant be "seen" (this is confirmed by placing a msgbox in the above sub, which comes up blank) until the user open the second tab, at least just once. Then its ok. I know I can just run a small method to quickly open all tabs, but is there a reason this is happening, and a better way to do this?

I am running Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express. I created a simple program that is nothing more than dozens of Windows Forms that are linked together by the various clickable buttons I put on each form. The program is like a "book" with several pages, and you jump to a specific page by clicking on specific buttons on the current page ("Windows Form").
My question is, how do I change my program so that when it is launched, instead of just 1 Windows Form opening, the program opens up several Windows Forms (of my choosing) automatically? In other words, instead of my "book" (VB program) opening "page 1," when I run it, I want it so that pages 4, 7, 8, 10, and 15, are "opened" whenever I run my "book."
Is there some code I need to insert into each Windows Form I wanted opened automatically when the program is loaded? Or is this a MS VB 2010 Express environment option I need to set?

I have an MDI window with multiple child forms. The user can hide or display child windows by checking/unchecking in a View menu on the main form, calling on either the Show or Hide methods for that form. Each time I call the show method do I also have to specify myForm.MdiParent = Me, or do I only have to specify that once, ie does vb remember that the form will always be a child? it doesnt appear to be a form property any more (from vb6).Second question relates to forms themselves. If I have created a form at design time, is it more efficient to create an instance of that form using New, or simply show the form as it is by just loading it.What are the pros or cons, memory and speed wise? In my case I will never need more than one copy of that form to appear, I'm using VB2005.

I have a main form, and some sub forms, and each sub form can have some sub forms. When I have multiple sub forms open, and I try to get data from the parent form, it returns the data from the wrong parent form.For example I have two instances of Mainform.subform running. If I do something like this in a child form of one instance of the subform. It returns data from the other subform.
dim l = Mainform.subform.listofdata
Edit:I am using visual Studio 2008. Winforms, form designed using designer. In my mainform I am doing this
Protected Friend frmMain as Mainform
frmmain = new mainform
In frmMain I am doing this
Protected Friend frmsub as new Subform'
frmsub = new subform

I have an MDI form on which I am trying to open two other forms in the same place (not at the same time). One works, one doesn't. Both of these forms have the following as the very first statement in the load event.
One form opens in that location and functions fine. The other form, which is the same size, seems to spread out across the MDI form top-to-bottom wise. There is also a bar at the top with min, max, and close buttons that came from where I don't know as the form is set with no border. This form must open in the correct way as there is a menu at the top of the MDI. Anybody have any idea why this is happening? Some property or something which is different between the 2 forms?[code]...

I have an MDI form with child forms which I open on it. The following statement in each form's load event places a child form in the location I want:
Me.Location = New Point(0, 136) I have several of these working. However, I have one form for which this statement does not work. It opens spread out over the entire parent form. Also, there is a border at the top with min, max, and close buttons even though the form has no border. This form has a picture box on it, if that means anything. why this child form does not open in the specified location?

We have a main form which opens an MDI child form. What we want is to set the focus on a particular control in the child form, namely a telerik textbox. When the form is opened for the first time, the focus is set to the textbox control which has a tabIndex = 1 as expected. If the winodw is closed (and disposed) and then reopened via a button on the tool bar that calls the same code that opens the window when the application starts, no control has focus. We have added lines such as Me.rtxtPatientId.Focus() in the Paint event, load event, and activated event handlers but still cannot get the focus to the control. The code is quite extensive so posting it is difficult. However, here is the section that opens the child window:
if PatientSearchForm Is Nothing Then
PatientSearchForm = New frmPatientLookup
End If
PatientSearchForm.MdiParent = Me
PatientSearchForm.Show()
If PatientSearchForm.WindowState = FormWindowState.Minimized Then
PatientSearchForm.WindowState = FormWindowState.Normal
End If
PatientSearchForm.Activate()
PatientSearchForm.rtxtPatientID.Focus()

I'm creating an application that uses an MDI container to create a sort of desktop style for my form with a group of icons docked to the left hand side. The rest of the form is the desktop area that I want all windows to open in.If I use the standard File-New option that is provided by VB as a default for the MDI container this works fine and a child window is loaded.If I use similar code from one of the icons this also works fine.y problem is that one of my child forms is a search panel and when I double click on one of the results I want a window to open, but as an MDI child. However, this doesnt happen. When I open the window it opens as a completely separate window and isn't docked within the MDI parent. It also appears on the task bar as a separate application.

Since last 2 days I have been getting a strange problem with my Vb programming (VS2005). Whenever I open any Vb or C# code and press F5 (in order to debug), several windows open at a time like Memory1, Memory2, Memory3, Threads, Processes, Registers, Data sources. And simultaneously the SOLUTION EXPLORER that is present at top-leftmost corner generally goes missing. When I restore that and put my cursor over SOLUTION EXPLORER, the program hangs and a message comes as : "Microsoft Visual Studio has encountered a problem and needs to close".I have attached the screen shots of the problems to this Thread.I tried various ways like restoring my computer to an early date, repairing Windows XP and then uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Studio. But none seem to work.

I'm writing a program which gets the time and date from forums which only show "x hours ago" on the main thread list.What I do is get a list of threads, open their print version and fetch the info.I'm currently using a single webbrowser, because there's no control array anymore. This makes the proccess very slow.Is there a way to open all the threads' print versions simultaneously?(BTW, I'm using DOM functions like GetElementsByTag, so I'll need to get the page's "Document" object.)

I have made a registry entry as follows: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTMy AppShellOpenCommandAnd gave it the value: "C:Program Filesmyapp.exe" "%1" "%2"I also had a drophandler to for the apphis entry works fine for opening one file that is dragged to my app's icon. The problem is that I can only drag one file at a time into the app. If I try to drag more, it only ees the first file and ignores the others. I use the My.Application.CommandLineArgs array to access the command arguments. For example, My.Application.CommandLineArgs.Item(1) will open the file. If I change the registry entry to:"C:Program Filesmyapp.exe" "%1" "%2" "%3"This will open the first two files, but ignore the rest. If I change the registry entry to "C:Program Filesmyapp.exe" "%1" "%2" "%3" "%4"This will have the same behavior as the previous entry and ignore all but the first two files.
